My Ultimate GERRY ANDERSON BARRY GRAY Collection of music below:
open.spotify.c...
UFO is a 1970 British television science fiction series about an alien invasion of Earth, created by Gerry Anderson and Sylvia Anderson with Reg Hill, and produced by the Andersons and Lew Grade's Century 21 Productions for Grade's ITC Entertainment company.
UFO first aired in the UK and Canada in 1970 and in US syndication over the next two years. In all, 26 episodes, including the pilot, were filmed over the course of more than a year, with a five-month production break caused by the closure of the MGM-British Studios in Borehamwood, where the show was initially made.
The Andersons had previously made a number of very successful marionette-based children's science fiction series including Supercar, Fireball XL5, Stingray, Thunderbirds, and Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons. They had also made one live-action science fiction movie, Doppelgänger, also known as Journey to the Far Side of the Sun, and now felt ready to move into live-action television and aim at a more adult market. UFO was the Andersons' first totally live-action TV series.
Despite the assumption of many TV station executives, the series was not aimed at children but deliberately sought an older audience; many episodes featured adult themes such as adultery, divorce, and drug use. Most of the cast were newcomers to Century 21 although star Ed Bishop had previously worked with the Andersons as a voice actor on Captain Scarlet and The Mysterons.

+Connie Wonnie I remember very vaguely, though I was admittedly quite young at the time. The uniforms, like much of the wardrobe, are of a piece with "futuristic" uniform notions from the late 1960's. Since the 1960's were only barely over, the same clothing styles would still have been the norm. The real innovation was, oddly enough, the purple-haired girls from SHADO Moonbase -- I can't say that I recall any other TV series of the time going with identical purple wigs.

Unbelievably good picture and sound, goes to show that the camera and sound operatives really knew their stuff, the question is why was it so good as it was only ever going to be shown on low def 200 to 300 line horizontal resolution broadcast TV. Thank goodness they did take the care, this goes for all TV shows by the way.
@80s_Boombox_Collector

You think that was good, check out Forbidden Planet. And that was 14 years before this.
@MrGeoffHilton
@MrGeoffHilton 3 года назад
@@80s_Boombox_Collector the difference is forbidden planet was a major Hollywood film probably costing hundreds of times more whereas UFO was a twenty odd episode weekly series, production values in a major Hollywood film mean it takes months or years to produce compared to days or weeks for an episode of TV production. Forbidden Planet is a brilliant film in fact it will be in my top 10 list easily.

UK tv at the time was 405 lines black-and-white or 625 lines colour - ITV (which was the original network this was shown on) only started colour broadcasting in October 1969, so this would have been a very early colour transmission, though most people wouldn’t have a colour tv until many years later - colour tvs cost around £300 at a time when some people were barely earning £1000 a year. (My grandmothers’ terraced house was sold in late ‘69 for £895 - admittedly that was a 1/3rd discount because my aunt bought out my mum and uncles’ share!).

This would have been shot on film so the resolution would be much higher than TV in those days could come close to.

the space intruder detector (SID) in orbit was an FTL detector that had just come online. this system was supposed to mirror the British radar system during world war 2, allowing the efficient interception of German warplanes by RAF fighter pilots. I think this show would have made a nice space component to International Rescue in the Thunderbirds.
