On a day when our beloved queen finally hands in her crown it was a welcome sight to see another Eddie epic pop up in my notifications. You changed asombre mood for a wee while, that might even be a story how many times did she visit the center of the universe, the toon. Did she ever arrive on the tyne in Britannia? I think you are doing nearly as much for our beloved region as Brown Ale. Keep up the great work.
I believe she arrived on Britannia in 1977 during her silver jubilee. I also remember she visited the north east, I think in the very early 70's. I recall all of us school children standing on Kenton Lane waving our little flags as she drove down, following her landing at Newcastle airport. I don't recall what the visit was for. Maybe Eddy can do a video on her various visits to the north.
Great report Eddie. Back in the 1970s, me and a few drunken pals shoved a giant Christmas tree that was waiting to be put up in the Bigg Market, down the stairs of the toilet and trapped several unfortunate patrons inside . . we never got caught so don't tell anyone.
As a history nerd and thousands of miles away from England, I LOVE your vids about the regional tyneside history… with the NUFC content, this is the perfect channel
This is amazing, I totally had no idea these bars exsisted. Neither did my hubby who is from the north east. Thanks for showing them, we definitely want to visit. What a fab way to use the space!!
Wow , the last time i was in those Gents toilets would have been 1989 , great idea turning it in to a bar , as for the womans bar never knew any thing about that , might be a bit tight to get in and out on a weekend , great video again Eddy
Great video Eddie. Yet again I seem to be following you round! I was in the town for a walk around and coffee on Sunday and i went down high bridge and i saw that Gin bar and wondered what it was haha! Now I know! Thanks mate
Excellent video have to admit didn't know about the 2nd one. Always remember the other underground toilet in Shakespeare St, handy when getting off the bus in Worswick St.
Eddy, its good to see they done something with it. Same goes for the one in South Shields, which if i remember was a victorian public toilet (now colemans seafood temple)
Champion. Cheers for the heads up. More of a malt whisky man myself but will certainly take the good lady wife to one or both of these when I'm next in Newcastle. Will have a bad back carrying around all my brownie points in my rucksack....! 😸
I remember the men’s toilet well. They must have used lots of air freshener 🙊. Amazing how they have converted it. Would love to go to the Gin Bar. Great vid as usual Eddie.
Great snippet of " Gin Life" in the Toon. Knew about the gents, never knew about the Ladies! Must visit both ( promise to self)..... bridge tavern for a booked early Sunday lunch, with missus & dog on Sunday . Have a great weekend Eddy.......we might need a brolly ! 😉👊
@@TynesideLife Hi Eddy 👋 I'm certain she'll have a great run on Sunday. My first GNR was in 1984 (16 yrs!) @ £3.50p. My last one was in 2013, when I paid £50 for an entry. At that price point, I called it a day. Still a great event for the Area and always showcases what we have up here. Might we see a wee video next week of the gnr Eddy? 🙏 Those Loo's circa 1980's.....after 10.30pm last orders in the big market, a quick tinkle stop, then straight into the rupali (opposite) for an Indians ! Happy days from the 80's ! 🍻😅👍
I used to rent an office space above the mma gym on highbridge for a recording studio and it didn’t have toilets. So we used to use them. I hadn’t realised they’d closed. Just shows how little I make it into the town centre these days
The Gin Shop is probably better described as a Speak Easy I would say. Certainly there are the modern trend here in the US where many times they aren't advertised at all and only entered through secret doors in some cases. Makes me want to visit Newcastle again. I'm British and both parents and relatives are all Geordies to be clear 😃
Years ago my late dad who was bus driver in Newcastle related to me that whilst driving down there skidded on iced cobbles and crashed into the roof of the toilets.Obviously worried he descended down into the toilets to find a guy stood at the urinals covered in dust and debris..
@@TynesideLife mmm, not sure myself. It means we have no public toilets in the town centre. Shop toilets only for customers and no where to go when pubs and bars are closed, it's causing a bit of a problem. Great docs by the way 🙂
@@TynesideLife well if you put 15 people in tin of sardines you wouldn’t be able to get your hands out of your pockets I’ll try and take some photos of it tomorrow and send them to you some how
These were always well known Gents and Ladies they were used by a lot of people the days the big market had it's market on which I think we're a tue Thurs and Saturdays. They were open in the 1990s and didn't close in the 70s. My mam worked in there for a long time for City Works/Newcastle council. Good video.
@@TynesideLife it was famous for it in the 80s on lad was on leave from the army and brought a thunder flash back with him set it off dropping over the railing BANG and the glass lifted of the roof and collapsed inside of the toilets the police were busy that night I think it was 85 are 86
0:47 I had to go to the pisser Cos I've got a burstin knob But when I got down the stairs They said "hello there Rob" I'm pissin at home, Newcastle The bogs are now all bars Ah'd shuffle the streets all day all night For a throne to take a shite I'm pissin at home, Newcastle You can keep your Gin Bar latrine I'd rather drink from from the river tyne Than drink in a knob juice scene I'm pissin at homeeeeeeee
