The ACC's insignia is a circular laurel wreath with crossed tipstaves. A tipstaff was a cylindrical brass tube with a screw cap in the shape of a crown. In Victoria times it was used to transport important documents including warrants of arrest. These documents would be rolled up then slid inside the tipstaff to protect them from the weather.

In Australia each state has its own police force and rank structure, and the Federal Police is different as well. In Queensland we have Constable, Senior Constable, Sergeant, Senior Sergeant, Inspector, Superintendent, Chief Superintendent, Assistant Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner and Commissioner. The current commissioner is a woman. The state premier, the state governor, and the Chief Justice are women too.

Wow great video mam. I see the indian subcontinent has quite similarly with the uk policing system . Here in my country Bangladesh the order is like this : From low to high The subordinate officers are : Constable Asistant sub inspector Sub inspector/ sergeant Inspector The superior officers : Assistant superintendent Additional superintendent Super independent (district head) Additional Deputy inspector general Deputy inspector general Inspector general (the head of the police in whole country ) In metropolitan the sub ordinate officers are same name Just the superior officers hold the same rank with different name Called commissioners in them . Same as Londonas metropolitan ranks .

I have two questions: 1- a Chief Constable have a "term", or he is in charge until someone dismiss them? (I know that after 2012 most of Chief Constables are choosen by a elected Comissioner, so i have another questions about this) 1b- are chief Constables depedent of a Comissioner Term? If a comissioner gets fired of something like that, the CC are also dismissed? 1c- before the introduction of a Elected comissioner, how was a Chief Constable choosen? And, if a CC is reliant in the comissioner term, how much they lasted in charge?

profdev.college.police.uk/professional-profile/chief-constable/ hi Novo, that’s an excellent number of questions, this link tells you all about the chief constable role in the U.K. I know Steven Watson was the chief of SYP for 5 years before moving over to Manchester. The average length of term is 3.65 years according to npcc.police.net (MPS is longer at 4.63 years) some retire after their role and others transfer to different forces. The average career length for police officers prior to the 2010 recruitment freeze was 30 years and I know it can take a long time to ascend the ranks. You’re right that the PCC does the hiring and if necessary the firing/retiring of police chief constables

What has always intrigued me is that an inspector is considered to be a senior rank in the police force, yet only 2 steps from a PC. However to the chief constable there are 6 steps. Could it to be to tame political infighting that occurs at senior levels?

HI Hayley. How do the lower ranks address higher ranks? Do they say Sir/ Maam? do they have to salute/ stand to attention etc?
@jakobboyden5491
@jakobboyden5491 Год назад
No salutes or standing to attention in most forces. Its Sir or Ma'am for Inspector+ (unless you are equal in rank) and a Sergeant is usually addressed as 'Sergeant' or 'Sarge' These can be informalised with familiarity, however. Sergeants can be 'Boss' And in some forces like the met, Inspectors and/or Chief Inspectors can be 'Guv' or 'Guvnour' tho that can also be applies to higher ranks sometimes too.

Can you explain why there are 43 different police authorities in a tiny country of 100,000 sq miles ?????? Also why has there been no reorganisation of this cumbersome outdated force that is not fit for purpose ??? Also you did not mention the Commander rank why?
@hayleyvictoriacrime
@hayleyvictoriacrime 2 года назад
Hi Bertie, I can certainly try :) the commander ranks are in The city of London police and the Met, not in the rest of them. I agree it’s a bit confusing and perhaps a newer model would be something to look at? Crimes are very different county to county and as such they need to match resources to demand specifically to their policing areas, they may have different specialist teams created to help with this. Hope this helps and thanks for your question
@mjspice100
@mjspice100 2 года назад
Police forces traditionally were organised on a local basis, over time they merged and became amalgamated into county forces/constabularies. There are a few county forces which merged together some years ago to form larger entities. Thames Valley Police being an example of this, a merger of the old Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire county forces. The basis of policing was always local people policing local communities and originates from the days when communities were far more static than they are now and also it makes forces accountable on a local basis. There may be a case for a complete merger of all forces into one unit in the 21st century, people are far more mobile now than they ever have been with criminal gangs operating nationally. Scotland has already paved the way for this by merging their county forces into Police Scotland, it’s only a matter of time before England and Wales follow suit. However there still has to be local accountability. The rank of commander isn’t mentioned because that is a rank used by the Metropolitan Police and the City of London Police. The rank structure discussed here is used by county forces and non home office forces which actually form the bulk of the police service in England and Wales.

@@mjspice100 Thanks for reply but you have missed the point ...it's totally inefficient small counties each doing there own thing with an abundance of administrative staff top heavy officers multiplied by 43. It way way outdated there are massive savings to be made .The military for example has been tasked over 50 years to constantly reorganize to save money, readily to changing threats etc but the police have remained stagnant.Nothing but a thorough reorganization is overdue nothing less the head off the reorganization should be given terms of reference to save billions and reallocate funds strip the entire police organisations to the bone and rebuild for the 21st century top ranks should be reduced by at least 40% bottom rank and file increased etc etc. In fact pay me a salary give me a team and I would head it up ..but I must answer direct to the Home Secretary not a police officer.It needs modern out of the box thinking not the past seeping into the future !

@@bertiewooster3326 you won’t find me disagreeing with you, I took that point a very long time ago, however at the level I served at those type of decisions are way above my pay grade and are better directed, perhaps, to the home office or to your MP rather than on social media. Your basic question was why there are 43 territorial police forces and I think I provided a reasonable answer. As to why it continues? Who knows? The answer, as I said, lies way above my pay grade… Others out there may be able to provide a better and more detailed answer for you but nothing will be solved here on a social media platform…

hmm. as an american, when you say area, I have no idea what that means county?? we have a chief of police for a city, district commander, captain, lieutenant, sergeant, corporal, officer. w\depending on the state we could have county police, sheriffs dept and county police.

Good morning, that’s really interesting thank you, We have a Chief Superintendent per district. So In South Yorkshire for instance we have 4 (Rotherham, Sheffield, Barnsley, Doncaster) and we would have 1 Chief Constable for the whole of South Yorkshire.
@mjspice100
@mjspice100 2 года назад
Just to expand a little on what Hayley is saying. Each police force divides its jurisdiction up. How those divisions are referred to varies from force to force. Some refer to them simply as divisions, some will call them areas, some call them districts, notably the Metropolitan Police who cover the Greater London area. Usually each of those divisions is commanded by a Chief Superintendent with responsibilities being passed down the chain of command.

What ranks would be equivalent to the American Starsky and Hutch type of thing ?
@hayleyvictoriacrime
@hayleyvictoriacrime 2 года назад
Hi Peter, I just had a little watch of Starsky and Hutch (about 5 minutes) they’re in an unmarked car, in plain clothes and look to be investigating crimes. Apart from the firearms; they wouldn’t look out of place in a Pro-active CID team in the U.K. they look like DC’s to me (detective constable) which is the same rank as PC but through the investigation route. Once you do 2 years on patrol in uniform (after you are safe and lawful) you can train up to go into CID (or at least that’s how it was a few years ago)
@mjspice100
@mjspice100 2 года назад
Their actual ranks I don’t think were ever made that clear on the show but they were police detectives. I just did a little reading on the story and they were based on two real life police detectives from the NYPD, the shows writers shadowed them and based the stories on their experiences.. Hill Street Blues which I was a big fan of in the 1980’s was equally well researched, the shows writers gathered together stories and anecdotes from real police officers and incorporated them into the show.
