IB and Andy target tricky summer rising trout on the river Derwent in Derbyshire, part of the Peacock Hotel water and the Haddon Estate. Beginning using both dry fly and a duo nymph rig the give themselves a chance of catching plenty of wild brown trout as well as wild rainbow trout and grayling, but will the dry and dropper nymph outfit out-fish the dry fly? How can we catch more trout in these conditions, and how to decide which technique to use?

@@IBandAndyFishing Among my friends that fly fish I haven't talked much of traveling outside of our immediate area which is Utah, Wyoming, Idaho & Montana. Lots of uncharted river we dream of getting to before we die lol. So I don't know how to answer that question. I am not sure what the most known river in England is to us Americans. Obviously A LOT of history in the sport originating there though! I just have a dream of winning the lottery and fly fishing the world, and the rivers of the UK would be beautiful part lol! I did see that the Itchen, Wye, Ure & Tyne are some of the top rivers when searching that topic online. The Wye is a guiding spot for you right? Is drift boats a popular way to fish in England?

Enjoy you both. If you tie your own flies, try adding a bit of bright CDC to your dry flies. Easier to spot them on the drift. Also, a small strike indicator above your nymph will keep it just off the bottom and help to varify a strike. Great action.

@@IBandAndyFishing I have never caught Barbel, however we do have a few species of barbus or yellowfish here which are incredible to catch on fly such as the Largemouth, Smallmouth, Large and Small scale yellows. They seem very similar to the Barbel. Unfortunately though in many of their native waters the yellowfishes have been diminished due to competition from introduced species such as smallmouth bass, carp and trout as well as water pollution.

I’m new to fly fishing and seem to be missing a lot of wild browns in my local river. After watching your videos, could I be striking too quick? Is there such a thing? Maybe I need to do a very short pause then strike??? Help!! Also when I do miss the fish, I notice u change a fly and the seem to go again for it. Does this work? Anyone feel free to answer. It’s all about learning everyone
@ThePorpoisepower
@ThePorpoisepower 4 года назад
If you aren't already, you may need to tweak your hook set according to your position in relation to where the fish is and the direction of the current. It's a bit complicated but there's videos on the subject
@IBandAndyFishing
@IBandAndyFishing 4 года назад
It can be a combination of things, too fast/slow, current direction, current speed, direction the fish turns in, even just plain old luck. In my experience though it's often just speed, try to wait until the fish has turned down with the fly before you strike. I'm in a real dry fly funk at the moment, I'm missing lots, I feel your pain! -AB

Great video again!!!! When you say "spinner fall", what does that actually refer to? I'm really clueless about fishing the dry 😕
@IBandAndyFishing
@IBandAndyFishing 4 года назад
A 'spinner' is the final, egg laying stage of most upwinged insects. A river fly starts life as an egg on the river bed. Hatches in to a nymph, lives on the river bed between 6 months and 2 years. Rises up through the water column until it reaches the surface Struggles out of its nymph body, legs first, then wings, then the rest of the body, this is an emerger. The adult fly sits on the water for a few seconds drying out and getting the blood through it's wings. This is a dun. A dun flies off the water and lands on the leaves of trees where it sits over night. It then breaks it's outer skeleton for the second time. This time it's wings are much more clear, and it's tails split open - these are the spinners. Spinners then fly off the trees and gather in clouds where they dance by flying up and down (that's where they get the name, it's a crap name) They eventually pair up and mate by joining up the ends of their bodies. The males pretty much die on the spot, but the females fly off and lay their eggs by dapping their tails on the surface of the water. Eventually they run out of energy and get stuck in the water, where they for die. This is a spent spinner
