@@XavierLeFrancais Isn't the CDG constantly in need of repair though. Remember, when the UK start these carriers there was originally going to be 3, France was going to have the other one. It was known that France's military was starting to look a bit old in terms of blue water projection. Your defence is still solid don't get me wrong, but France is one of the few countries to have a bunch of overseas territories. You didn't get the new ACC for some reason I cannot remember, but CDG isn't enough.

At least 2 more carriers, nuclear powered. We have to guard against Argentina and Spain ganging up on us simultaneously.

@@mrsiborg Prince of Wales has the same dimensions as Queen Elizabeth, both being 284m long. PoW is somewhat heavier than Queen Elizabeth currently due to being built with modifications to aid in the helicopter assault role, which QE will receive during her first major refit period.

@@mrsiborg Umm... each tower carries an engine uptake. The forward tower is for conning the ship and the aft controls the aircraft movements. However, if push comes to shove each can do the other's job. In the days of steam turbines and single massive towers doing the lot you could get interesting air currents, especially hot air from the uptakes, making life interesting for folk landing on.

In "working dress" the rank slide as it's now called is worn centrally on the chest and it tends to be black on the same colour as the shirt - especially aircrews and army personnel - less of a target for thr terrorist to note and aim at! I think your own services tends to go the same way!

@@mikewalrus4763 Thanks, I have seen the slide on Canadian army and navy personnel, and when I read your answer I recall seeing it attached to an arm, where I did find the rank on the pilot but the camera angle didn't show either spot on the observer and the two sailors in dark uniforms. @@ThatSusLad the Navy could form one by itself but not two. The escorts and supply ship's just aren't available all once to allow them to do so. Also there is not a sufficient number of F35's delivered to do the same.

But lets say we wanted to send it west for example where it's less 'risky' to allow training and shit with Canada and the US. You could send it out with: HMS PoW - 1x Aircraft Carrier HMS Daring, Dauntless, Dragon - 3x Daring class Destroyers RFA Fort Austin & Fort Rosalie - 2x support/refueling ships HMS Ambush - 1x Astute class submarine\ 8x F35B (we have 21 total, and 8 are out on HMS QE) This fleet is slightly smaller than the current carrier group, but it wouldn't be heading through hostile waters. As far as I can see, the UK has the physical capability if it wanted to have two fleets out there, it's just not worth it, so they are not. It's not that they can't physically do it. If for whatever reason WW3 broke out, HMS PoW isn't sitting in the UK docked. It would just be a glorified runaway.

@Brian of Knocknasheega Yeah, but stuck to the less capable, more things to go wrong (at much higher speeds) B variant of the F-35, with no ability to fly a less expensive jet for missions that don't require stealth. It's too much of a glorified helicopter carrier for its displacement, in my opinion, as the maximum number of F-35Bs it can fly seem to be 36 for normal wartime operations, with a surge capability of 72. I would have hoped the normal maximum was closer to 50 for 65 000 Tonnes of displacement.

@@kw8757 Eye In The Sky pointed out one of the reasons the carriers should have been catapult based. There's also the fact that even the US Navy has decided to run F-18s (Block III Superhornet) aside the F-35 for cost effectiveness, because it's prohibitive to run F-35Cs for every aircraft on every mission. Granted, the Royal Navy doesn't have as large of a mission in peace time or small wars, but during a large war? Another World War? The inability to launch other naval aircraft, and receive them (allies and such) save for the Russian and Soviet naval fighters designed for ramp launching, is a bit too limiting for the capital ships of one of the world's largest, most advanced navies (in my opinion).

@@tomcummin6801 As far as I can make out as ships are inanimate objects and as such are gender neutral, they are referred to as it. But as Russian words are masculine, feminine or neuter the ship's name is important. A Russian warship whose name ended in 'A', a feminine ending, would be referred to as she. Names that are masculine words would have the ship referred to as a he. The names of classes of warship, destroyer, frigate etc are all masculine words. So it would appear that sailors aboard the actual vessel may refer to it as she or he, but the Russian Navy more generally would refer to the warship as it.

Apart from penny pinching as you put it, the carrier was only ever going to use the F35. It was designed from the outset to launch 5th generation fixed wing aircraft so no F18's or P3's etc.

Carriers in port and when underway in transit are often without their air wing. The air wings generally join the carrier when it’s underway.

NATO flag ship for one year, not the RN flag ship. It's a new carrier, it's inevitable it will have problems in the early years, that's what sea trials are for.

It's already had F35 B onboard a few days back in the channel along with different helicopter types ... they are back at their land bases ... flat tops don't normally port with aircraft onboard unless during an active deployment.
