Welcome to Uki Uki Chat!
Today we're discussing the islands of Okinawa and their distinct languages and dialect with Okinawan dancer and singer, Ms. Junko Fisher.
Please come check out Japan Society's upcoming programming "Okinawan Vibes" dedicated to the art, culture and food of Okinawa.
www.japansociety.org/okinawa
Throughout this three-month special series, attendees will have the opportunity to experience the unique sounds, flavors, colors and history of Japan's southern island chain, Okinawa.
------
Okinawa has more than 160 islands between Kyuushuu and Taiwan, stretching over 1,000 km.
Throughout the islands, there are region specific languages, three of which are:
Uchinaa guchi/kutuba - Okinawa Language (main islands)
Yaima kutuba - Yaeyama Language
Miyaaku kutuba - Miyako Language
With the spread of Standard Japanese throughout Okinawa, many of these unique languages are hardly spoken in daily life today. This has led to a distinct dialect(s) of Standard Japanese spoken throughout Okinawa.
Examples of Uchinaaguchi (Okinawa Language)
Tea: ocha (Standard) - ucha (Uchinaaguchi)
Parents: oya (Standard) - uya (Uchinaaguchi)
Sake - sake (Standard) - saki (Uchinaaguchi)
Karate - karate (Standard) - karati (Uchinaaguchi)
I, me - watashi (Standard) - wan (Uchinaaguchi)
Good morning - ohayou gozaimasu (Standard) - ukimisoochii (Uchinaaguchi)
Welcome - irasshaimase/youkoso (Standard) - mensooree (Uchinaaguchi)
Hello - konnichiwa (Standard) - haisai (Uchinaaguchi)
Very - totemo/sugoku (Standard) - deeji (Uchinaaguchi)
Okinawa - Okinawa (Standard) - Uchinaa (Uchinaaguchi)
"Thank you" in Okinawa
Standard - arigatou gozaimasu
Uchinaaguchi - nifeedeebiru
Miyaaku kutuba - tandigaatandi
Yaima kutuba - nifaayuu
The native languages of Okinawa have been labeled by UNESCO as endangered languages. We hope that continuing efforts will be made to preserve the beautiful native languages of Okinawa for future generations.

Ok, this video is really nice, but unfortunately there are few misconceptions in the video that need clarifying. 1) Firstly, "haisai" is only said by men. Women greet by saying "haitai" in uchinaaguchi and that's only around Naha. In Shuri, "haisai/haitai" is never used as people there prefer to use the more formal "chuu wuganabira" instead. "Haisai/haitai" have become widespread because they've been used in commercials and as a decorative word to promote Okinawa, especially in tourism. As a matter of fact, "-sai" and "-tai" are particles that gives some sort of formality to the sentence and they're related to the more formal "-sari" and "-tari". For example, "wannee uchinaanchu yaibiin doo" (I AM Okinawan!) can be softened by adding "-sai" or "-tai", if you're a woman, at the end of the sentence, becoming "wannee uchinaanchu yaibiin doo sai (tai)". 2) They're not dialects! They're fully fledged languages of their own right. This "dialect" thing started when Japan annexed the Ryukyu Kingdom to their territory. What is now "Okinawa prefecture" used to be an independent country called Ryukyu (Ruuchuu in Okinawan, Lew Chew in English and Léquios in Portuguese) and its history goes all the way to the pre-history. In the 15th century Sho Hashi unified the entire island of Okinawa under one throne. At the time he put his father Sho Shisho on the throne. Japanese language was only introduced in the islands at the very end of the 19th century and was promoted as the language of education at the expense of the native Ryukyuan languages! That's when the term "dialect" started to be used in a political sense to give the idea that the native languages were somewhat "inferior" to the language spoken in Tokyo. There was intense propaganda aiming to wipe out the Ryukyuan languages from the islands. This is crucial to understand why they are dying. This very idea of "dialect is being challenged in Okinawa and abroad as well, where uchinaanchu have immigrated as it concerns our identity as uchinaanchu and/or children of uchinaanchu. 3) UNESCO has actually divided those languages into 6 groups including Amami. Amami is not part of Okinawa prefecture but it was part of the Ryukyu Kingdom. So, there is Amami language, Kunigami language, Okinawan (Uchinaaguchi), Miyako, Yaeyama and Yonaguni. The Kunigami language comprises Kikai-jima, Okinoerabu and Yoron as well as the entire northern part of Okinawa island. These are not "dialects of Japanese". They didn't come from Japanese. They are sister languages of Japanese! Uchinaaguchi (Okinawan language) is the best documented languages among them. The language of the Omoro Soshi is an archaic form of Okinawan and it is still different from Japanese. "Kajadifuu" is one of the most famous Okinawan poems written in the old Okinawan language. 4) However, there is indeed a dialect of Japanese spoken in Okinawa. That's called "Uchinaa-Yamatuguchi", or "Okinawan Japanese". At 6:15 she gives an example of this different "accent". That's an example of "Uchinaa-yamatuguchi". There's also "-wake saa", "shimashou" meaning "I will do" not "Let's do" and so on. The list is endless. Uchinaa-yamatuguchi is basically Japanese with a strong influence of Okinawan. That's the only true "hougen" spoken in the islands.

Akira Uema say, do ya know anything about the large structures at the bottom of the ocean near Yonaguni, if they belong to the Ryūkyū Kingdom, or not?? Also, since ya know so much about Okinawa's history, do ya recall any mysterious island within Okinawa's chain that sank during an earthquake, along with the inhabitants of that island???

Thank you so much for your precious info, could you tell me if there are any group of activists trying to preserve these ancient languages with material in English to their activism? Also, could it be possible that they got preserved in the western alphabet (or somone could devise an easier system of writing them than the Japanese syllabaries) so that we western cultural activists could learn them faster and divulge them also more easily it over the web, to promote the preservation of these precious and ancient languages? Só agora vi que vc é tb brasileiro! Estou te enviando mensagem pelo Facebook.

My mom's native language is Uchinaaguchi. She said, back in the 1950s, they would be whacked with a switch and ridiculed if they spoke their native language in public schools.... As a nisei raised in the Southeastern US and ridiculed for speaking it in school, I too, do not speak Uchinaaguchi...and even my Japanese isn't as good as it should be. I lived in Okinawa and picked up Uchinaa Yamatuguchi. It took a lot of effort to get rid of it so I could work in the Tokyo area without problems. Mainland Japanese still look down on us. My relatives on the island are grateful that I look more western than asian for that reason. They are scared for me if anyone finds out I'm half-Uchinaanchu.

Okinawa used to be Ryukyu Kingdom, but the Japanese invaded it and turned it into Okinawa. The language is not a dialect of Japanese language, but an entirely different language with some borrowed scripts and words from both Japan and China.

not entirely, both is in the japonic family, a isolated family. japanese(yamato) + all ryukyuan languages + the isolated ainu = japonic family. we have some connectiont to austronesian/polynesian.

I can see the differences. It is not a "dialect" of Japanese. But yeah it is a the same language family with Japanese which 'Japonic Languages'. Because I can see the similarities too. But it is too different to be called as a "dialect"

James Scott most have. haplogroup D2 is in range from 25-70% haplogroup O2b 30-40% haplogroup O3 20-35% depending on area. interestingly tibetans also have much D. D is only found in japan, some parts of tibet and south-east-asia. O3 on all east-asia and south-east-asia. O2b japan, korea, northern china and some in indonesia. jomon people are originaly from south-east-asia(sunda-region). this is why south-east-asian phenotypes are in japan high. also we are the nation with more bodyhair compared to korea or china. most have hair on legs, some even on arms, but many cut it off.

+Romer Hakata Wow, all the videos in 2 days? AWESOME! Thanks so much for watching our series. (^^) Also, thank you for suggesting slang. We'll keep that in mind for a future video. In terms of Kanji, do you have some familiarity with Kanji already, or are you new to Kanji?
@RomerNakata
@RomerNakata 8 лет назад
+Kurahara Sensei You're welcome! I'm familiar with kanji. At unviersity we had to go through jouyou kanji list twice trying to memorize about 100-150 kanji a week (they tested us each Monday). We just progressed in aplhabetical order, so it was like 30 kanji with the same sound at once. By the next week we'd already forgotten everything from the previous week. I thought it was very unproductive. I know that people in Japan learn kanji throughout the entire school years, but I'm wondering what would be a more efficient way to learn kanji and more importantly not to foget them so easily.
@kazuekurahara7986
@kazuekurahara7986 8 лет назад
People have different learning styles so it's difficult to say what's best, but I would say that learning with association is definitely helpful. Rather than studying a bunch of Kanji in isolation (in an alphabetical order mechanically), start with the most frequently used (=practical) Kanji. Most importantly, learn them along with example sentences. So, let's say you're learning the Kanji 「書」: 1. Mechanical, not-so-helpful memorization method: on-yomi: ショ kun-yomi: か・が 2. More organic memorization method on a sentence level (provide furigana): 今日、図書館で手紙を書きました。(I wrote a letter today in the library.) *You don't need to feel pressure to write everything in Kanji if you're unfamiliar with some of the Kanji. You can mix in some Hiragana (e.g. 今日、図書かんで手がみを書きました。) Furthermore, I highly recommend that you try constructing your own original sentence using the Kanji you just learned. The sentence you had to think on your own is much more memorable (and harder to forget) than the one that was given to you. (^^)

I used to think uchinaguchi(the main okinawan dialect) was a different language from Japanese. But after this video i believe its a divergent Japanese dialect. Because wen she counted in their numbers, its similar to japanese, just flipped some of the spellings around. That is wen u know its a dialect.

No, the word karate originates from japanese as why it is spelled Ka ra te and not ka ra ti. It's weird how some english speakers say it as kara-tee which is coincidentally the okinawa version of karate.
