Welcome to Uki Uki Chat!
Today we're discussing Japanese Sign Language!
Did you know Sign Languages are vastly different country to country? Something as simple as "hello" changes completely between American and Japanese Sign Language.
We talk with Sherry-san, an instructor at the School for the Deaf, regarding various signs in both Japanese and American Sign Language.
So learn how to greet someone in both Japanese and American Sign Language and stay tuned for future episode that will introduce even more words, phrases and alphabet!
This Uki Uki video is produced in conjunction with Japan Society’s presentation of Spectator, a multimedia dance choreographed by Shuji Onodera.
Friday, November 13, 7:30 PM - followed by a MetLife Meet-the-Artists Reception
Saturday, November 14, 7:30 PM
This highly conceptual multimedia dance work transports audiences back and forth between a seemingly quotidian space and an outlandish world. Inspired by a series of workshops with students from a school for the deaf in Tokyo, Spectator unveils non-narrative stories of tender emotion, woven through director/choreographer Shuji Onodera’s original movement vocabulary coupled with video imagery, projected text, an intimate apartment room stage set and slapstick humor. The cast includes Naoya Oda from the celebrated butoh company Dairakudakan along with Maki Yamada and Mai Nagumo, two participants from Onodera’s initial workshops for deaf students.

most Americans know/learned about sign language from reading the Helen Keller story in elementary school... I was always under the impression that ASL was international... I learned something interesting today..arigatou

There is International Sign, but it's artificial sign language combined from easy-to-remember signs from ASL and couple of european SLs and used mostly in multinational/international Deaf Conferences to easen the need from constantly interpreting between different SLs. It has narrower vocabulary than naturally developed sign languages like ASL or BSL (british sl). ASL actually have quite widely-spread influence in the world. Example Thai Sign Language and some East African sign languages partially base on ASL, and many deaf youth especially in Europe know at least some ASL as second visual/physical language.

This is so very helpful, and the way Sherry-san explains each word with each sign, makes it so very easy to follow. I would greatly appreciate it if we could get more of these videos in the future, as I want to interpret JSL in a novel I am writing. Also I am very interested in learning it wwwwww Thank you for making this video! Great job!

I'm here because of 聲の形 I thought the sign language in the movie looked really cool, especially the sign for また. At the moment I'm just going to stick with learning japanese but this video was really good and maybe some time in the future I'll learn some kind of sign language

Basically, the further away a country is from another country, sign languages wouldn't be the same.
