“The Russians will have think about how far they’re going to push this war because if it would cost them Crimea, then clearly the war would be massively counter-productive.”
Ukraine could be in a position to “threaten” Crimea within the next few months in what would be the “biggest blow” to Putin, Professor Michael Clarke tells #TimesRadio.

The problem with Crimea is the population. This is important. Russia has severe problems in Ukraine in large part because they have run up against an angry and determined population who do not want them there. Similarly, they don't seem to have considered how they could control the Ukrainian population even if they defeated it militarily. The Ukrainians are not as supine and apathetic as the Russians. Ukraine needs to consider the attitude of the Crimean population. It is wrong to believe that the population of Crimea all feel Ukrainian and are longing to break away from Russia and go back to Ukraine. The population is split. Some feel Ukrainian, some feel Russian and some just feel Crimean. The history of Crimea is interesting and doesn't really mark it out as being clearly Ukrainian territory. Or Russian. I personally think the best option would be for it to be either independent or an autonomous part of Ukraine. By the way, in the comments section you can already see Russian bots or apologists, appearing with misinformation and propaganda. It is very hard but by far the best way to deal with them is to ignore them totally.

Just look at Crimea on a map and you can see that it controls the Sea of Azov and a good portion of the Black Sea. If Russia loses Crimea they'll have to move their Black Seas Fleet to the eastern side of the Black Sea. Essentially the Russian Black Seas Fleet will become useless. Earlier in the war the British transferred some helicopters that had been in storage to the Ukraine. I believe they were outfitted to conduct naval reconnaissance, etc. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XPl33hm_q-4.html Now, could they detect and ambush a Russian submarine? “The Russians will have think about how far they’re going to push this war because if it would cost them Crimea, then clearly the war would be massively counter-productive.” - Except behind the various pretexts securing Crimea was one of the single largest reasons for Putin's invasion. It's not been widely advertised but a key element of Ukraine's 2020 National Security Stretegy was to retake all the occupied territories - including Crimea - and furthermore the resolution of all outstanding territorial disputes was in fact a necessity for Ukraine to move forward with NATO membership. In fact Ukraine was making preparation in the medium to long term to retake Crimea. In short had the Russians not invaded they would have lost Crimea anyway except it would have been on Ukraine's terms and at the time of their choosing when their armed forces were even better prepared and equipped. Furthermore Crimea isn't just about 'rebuilding the Empire of Peter and Katherine the Great' although it ain't unrelated. With the loss of Crimea and dominance in the Black Sea rregion it's the end of any pretensions Russia might have as aglobal power and they suddenly become not only immensely vulnerable to strategic blockade but also lose power and influence within the wider region - particularly the fractious Caucasus and Caspian with their control of the vast petrochemical fields.

With HMS Montrose currently being decommissioned by the Royal Navy due to Defence Cuts, I wonder if the MOD will now hand her over fully provisioned and equipped to the Ukrainian Navy 🇬🇧🚢🇺🇦? HMS Montrose has both ASW and AA/AM capabilities, so could be used in a dual role in hunting down the Russian Kola Class submarines operating in the Black Sea as well as shooting down Russian long-range bothers operating out of Crimea, both of which are used as platforms by Russia to launch Cruise Missiles against civil infrastructure within Ukraine 🇺🇦. If the UK 🇬🇧 is now sending 10 Challenger II Tanks to Ukraine, why not a redundant Type 23 Frigate with advanced AWS and seaborne Air Defence capabilities? Would force the Russians to divide their Forces to fight on TWO Fronts, just as the Allies did in WWII by attacking the German Forces from the west at Normandy France 🇫🇷 and simultaneously from the south at Anzio in Italy 🇮🇹, which ultimately led to the compilation of Germany 🇩🇪. Russia 🇷🇺 would end up suffering the same fate through overstretch and over commitment of its Forces, with Bakhmut turning into Putin’s “Stalingrad”!

I hope you are correct but I fear you are not. The limited access ways to Crimea are narrow and certainly will be blocked and/or mined. russia has had many years to build up defenses and has no navy, so striking from the sea in a meaningful way is not an option. I read another analysis of this problem where it was estimated that cutting off the water supply from the north could potentially dry out the swampy areas at the neck of the peninsula allowing fow Ukraine to access Crimea across much broader areas that will potentially be unguarded but that would depend on many other factors.

What is this idea that Crimea is impregnable? Where does this come from? Has Professor Clarke looked at the history? Start with the Crimean War in the 19th century. I had a neighbor, when I lived in Winchester in the UK, who was a retired Major of artillery. He fought in both WWII and Korea. On the wall in his living room were a pair of crossed swords. These belonged to one of his ancestors who fought in that war. Crimea was taken from Russia. In WWII, it was taken twice. First by the Germans, then by the Soviets. In the current situation, considering the poor performance of the Russian army, and the advanced weaponry being provided to the Ukrainians, I think the odds are in their favor. It actually echoes the Crimean War scenario.
