In general, the content of this song is difficult to translate. As a native speaker of the Ukrainian language, it is also difficult for me to understand certain words that are ancient Ukrainian or dialectal, especially since it is a traditional Ukrainian song with which our people celebrate spring from ancient times and rejoice in it. The Ukrainian word "Shum" translates as "Noise", but the old Ukrainian word "Shum" means "Forest". Somehow everything is so confusing))). "Noisy Forest" - a forest that has woken up and makes thousands of sounds. The main content will look like this: Our Noisy Forest has beautiful green clothes. The girls were walking in that forest and accidentally damaged the green clothes of the forest. Noticing this, they decided to correct their mistake and restore the beauty of the green clothes of the forest to admire it again. In addition, many hemp was sown. :) like this.

The song "Shum" interpreted by Go_A is a modern rethinking of an archaic spring-game with elements of ancient magical rituals. "Our ancestors have always had a close connection with nature, and this has influenced their worldview and outlook. Calling Shum means waking up spring and speeding up the process of awakening all living things after a long cold winter. Today, this story takes on a new meaning. and is in a state of prolonged self-isolation and each of us felt how a person needs society and the need to feel part of something bigger. When creating the composition, I was inspired by spring-game from Polissya and dark techno, "says Go_A soloist Kateryna Pavlenko.

It’s a little disappointing to hear you comment in other videos that you want to hear a lot of “ethnic sounds” in Eurovision songs but then dislike this performance so much. This is the ethnic sound of Ukraine, especially in the voice, and I don’t think “ethnic sounds” should only be praised when they’re imitations of Africa, Latin America, or the Middle East.

You should either stay truly open minded about ethnic sound or not seek it...

@@whitemint9027 I get your point, but we simply don't like the sound of her voice! We didn't bash it once, we both said we don't enjoy it. Shum - ancient Ukrainian spring dancing game, which consists of two stages: weaving and unweaving of Shum (witch also one of spring demigods, dedicated to plants growth). When Shum is "weaving", pairs of dancers staying in semicircle, one pair forming "gates" with their hands and all other pairs crossing the "gates". When last one passed, "gates" changed direction of pairs moving, this is called "unweaving" shum: "gates" pair creat new "gates" with opposites hands and all pairs crossing it again and game continues, but faster and faster. @@ww1667 I was wondering what might have been so ancient and dialectal there for you. And then realized that you're likely just too young. Which is fine. But there's nothing ancient or dialectal in the song. Sure, its translation requires a certain above the average proficiency in both languages: obviously "дівки" would be probably conveyed as "lasses" instead of mere "girls", "шуба" would likely be translated as "gown" instead "fur cloth" etc. To make it sound as pagan in English as the original. But then again it is always the case with every pagan or ethnic text. As the song itself is concerned, I'm afraid everything is on the surface, there's nothing deeper there. THE TEXT OF THE SONG has deep folk roots, 1000 years long. This is an electrofolk reworked spring song(VESNYANKA). VESNYANKA - a ritual song for invoking spring after a long winter, and at the same time an allegory of getting rid of the coronavirus. People welcomed spring and rejoiced in the warmth. The more and faster you dance - the sooner Spring will come. The very active dancer is the first of the crowd, who began to come to life and pass the spring mood to the rest. SIYU VIYU KONOPELECHKI - sow and blow CANNABIS. CLOTHES of the ancient Slavs were created from CANNABIS

Only a week ago (when the song was actually released) this song wasn't even supposed to be a conterner for Eurovision. But recently, it somehow became it, among with 2 another songs... And was chosen by every single juror in their internal selection! So, this music video and audio are not for Eurovision at all just because it wasn't supposed to be there initially. This music video costed near $10, they just went to some hill, recorded only there (in one location), brought their own instruments... and that's all, the probably paid only for those medical outfits :) The title translates "Noise", the whole song is a reworked traditional Ukranian ditty with the addition of modern music (as they always do it), the main idea is some legend about the arrival of noise (that means the arrival of spring) and, accordingly, the continuation of life and the struggle with current problems (including what they acted in this music video). And you dislike not exactly her singing, you dislike this traditional Slavic vocal technique called "white voice", it's OK, it's not for everyone. For me personally it's diversity (that I like in every possible way) and absolutely not annoying.

Hi boyz, just a bit of clean up - the video, shot on an iPhone, was released Jan 22 without any (at least public) reference to Eurovision. Then, unfortunately, as it is in Ukraine now, everything got messy. A few days ago (may be a week) a national selection for songs by Go_A was announced, but without a public vote, just by the jury. So 2 more songs were presented by Go-A (still not available to the public, although 40 sec snippets were released). Finally "Shum" was selected. So it will be revamped, shortened and a new video hopefully will be made. Expected release - sometime in March. As to the song - it's a modern take on very traditional "spring calling" songs in Ukraine. This particular one tries to awake the god of forestry and greenery ("Shum" aka "Noise" )))) from his winter sleep by magic callings. When he awakes he will put leaves on trees and brings the spring. You are right, the lyrics is repetitive, but the more you call on deity, the more chance it will be heard))). IMHO Go-A made a perfect allusion to the modern times - aren't we all call calling for "spring" from our PPEs after such a horrible year? Here's another excellent modern take on "spring calling" songs - 2 participants in Vidbir are the headliners, Yuko and Khayat. And both are "white" voice singers. It might be not your cup of tea, especially for Toy, but still worth watching ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FA5IaiVpJ5c.html.

Hi Guys! You do need to see the final product. There will be an official video released in March with the new revamped 3 min. song. For this video they had 0 budget and I read they filmed it on iPhones. The outfits will change dramatically as the song has nothing to do with the pandemic. The lyrics are very repetitive because they are very metaphorical and are letting the instrumentation layer more depth each time. From what they have said the song Shum (Noise) is a call to nature to renew itself into Spring. I expect there will be a lot of green colors in their performance staging. This will be a very divisive because of her use of white voice but some people will adore the mixing of ethnic and techno/EDM. There definitely will be nothing else like it.

Shum is an atient Slavic God of forest . At the same time Shum translates from Ukrainian as Noise. This folk song is 1000+ years old. She is singing about planting green weed (yep cannabis) ,which symbolising spring comming, when everything gets green. "See you we you- " translates as sifting, planting, sowing (weed seeds). It is genius how they combine spring, hope that everything will wake up after winter and from Covid, with ukrainian mythology, club music with folk, even ritual music to some extend, weed as one of the symbols of the Netherlands (where eurovision will take place), video with protection costumes and one alone - dancer who spreads the vibes on the crowd. It is just a question of time when they join his party.

I like it. Especially the final version. It's really one of my favorite songs on this contest! Hugs from Russia!

The song is so long because Go_A wrote it not for Eurovision at first. But they added the song to the internal selection list because fans wanted this. And Go_A was really surprised when the song won. So they're going to cut it now and refilm the official video. Anyway, I love your reactions guys :) Even though our opinions are different sometimes.

This song is successor of old folk incantations did by girls for good walk to forest to pick berries. They are calling a spirit of a forest - Shum. So be careful. It needs a sacrifice. Dance for example ;)

The song is based on the ritual game of the same name-vesnyanka. "Our ancestors have always felt a close connection with nature, and this has influenced their worldview and worldview. To call Shoma means to call for spring and speed up the process of awakening all living things after a long cold winter. Especially today, in times of isolation, each of us understands how important it is to feel part of society, to be connected to it, to feel part of something bigger. When creating the composition, I was inspired by a spring girl from Polissya and dark techno, "says Go_A soloist Kateryna Pavlenko. The song "Noise" interpreted by Go_A is a modern rethinking of an archaic game with elements of ancient magical rituals

The main character of the video was an ardent fan of the Go_A group, who was invited to the shooting by the group members themselves. According to the plot, a person yearns for communication with people and dreams of returning to his usual life without distancing. For a moment his dream comes true: and now he is already dancing the freckle.

This is giving me a throw back to the Polish entry from 2018 somehow, a little bit of last year's Icelandic entry will an undertone of last year's Russian group. The song is very traditional while also throwing some electronic shade. I don't understand what it's about but it's interesting

I felt like I was observing an installation art video. I wanted to be intrigued but then they started horsing around and it descended into a mess. Meanwhile, her voice could be haunting, but in another song. Here it clashes with the music, which, as you pointed out, has its moments. : Unlikely to qualify.

They didn't plan to send "Shum" on Eurovision, so it's too long now. But than they added (accidentally) this song to the list and it won))
