"Will Ukraine be prepared, when it enters the EU, to assimilate its liberal humanist principles and values and contribute decisively to its dissemination as a society and culture in its geographical space?" I would like this question to be asked to understand how committed Ukrainian citizens are to accepting EU membership. The EU is definitely with Ukraine, as we see a culture of work, integrity and above all honesty that complements the multiculturality European space. SLAVA UKRAINE💛💙

So true! My first thought was that culturally there’s a difference between city people and country people here in Australia. Country people are more conservative, progressives live in the cities. They bitch about each other but no one thinks of joining a neighbouring country. Of course it’s all water so it would be awkward. I wish for a United and independent Ukraine, a valued member of the western democratic world. I wish the western democratic world would get its act together and industrialise its weapons industries and get this war over with. 🇺🇦🇺🇦🇦🇺

There will always be differences. Diversity can be a good thing. I am an American that grew up in Texas. We have a history greatly influenced by our proximity to Mexico. Culturally, there are many unique traditions in each state, such as food, politics, language, even music. But we are all Americans. Often, siblings are different from each other, but still part of the same family.

Interesting, some looked at it only from _"The Now,"_ and in a political tense. Others looked at it in the long-term, adding in the historical. _(I agree with the later.)_ I personally, would be absolutely shocked to see *any* country, that is the size of Ukraine, and doesn't have some regional & cultural differences. Such uniformity can only exist under a repressive regime. Under a democratic regime, individuals, peoples, cultures, can find expression and identity. It's normal, it's what makes cultures so beautiful and vibrant. So for me, the more Ukrainians find their _"true roots,"_ the more beautiful Ukraine becomes.

As a foreigner and a person who talked with Ukrainians, my observation about the difference between the East part and west part are these • West part of Ukraine is more homogeneous. Ethnic minorities such as Romanian and poles live, but Slavic Ukrainians live predominantly whereas in the East part, some residents especially in Kharkiv are from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia. Korean Ukrainians (Koryo saran) also mainly live in the Eastern part of Ukraine. 2: Some Ukrainians in the Eastern part cannot speak Ukrainian. My friend from Kharkiv still prefers Russian language for daily basis cuz it is his mother tongue. Even about Ukrainian language, in the Eastern part it is mixed with Russian a lot in contrast in western part, some Ukrainians able to speak polish for work abroad or their background (marriage between Poles and Ukrainians is pretty common) 3: The main industry in the west part of Ukraine is agriculture as well as recently tourism or IT industry. In the Eastern part of Ukraine, the main industry is manufacturing P.S: About the Russian language in Ukraine, Ukraine has lots of dialect of Russian language except Kiev

Thanks for asking the question I asked you to ask! Just to clarify for someone who didn't read my question as it flashed up at the start: I made clear that I was aware that the child-murderers of KGB Muscovite Empire had artificially created this so-called separatist movement in the East, etc. I wonder whether Russian-speakers in the East are more subjected to Russian TV (or are there channels in Russian language put out by Kyiv as well, I wonder?). Also, another thing I wondered about, particularly regarding the Donbass: it seems that both Donetsk and Luhansk cities were actually created by British mining entrepreneurs, in the 19th century, and that these mining activities attracted a lot of technical mining specialists from parts of Russia. Maybe this is one of the reasons (or one of the pretexts) which allowed the maggot Putin to find some pathetic twisted reasoning to justify the aggression and annexation since 2014. I'm English by the way so ... sorry about that! Slava Ukraini! 🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦
@wc1937
@wc1937 7 месяцев назад
1) It's hard to claim that the separatist movement was created artificially when it rose out of a reaction to the replacement of their ethnic language, even Russia still allows for multilingual studies for its various republics. It's like if Canada just suddenly forced all institutions in Montreal to only use English. This would of course cause an uproar. 2) Russian TV has been banned and all opposition media, especially Russian language, has also been banned, by Zelenskiy's orders. 3) Yes, this is true about the links with Britain, but this is because the Russian Empire had warm relations with England and France, and the Russian influence over this territory predates the 19th century by a long shot, hence why you have huge ethnic Russian populations living there.

Many of the millions of Ukrainians deliberately starved to death by stalin 90 years ago were in that area, and were then replaced by russian speakers. Having said that, we really should move away from equating russian-speaking Ukrainians with people who buy into kremlin propaganda, because many Ukrainians who grew up speaking mostly russian very firmly identify as Ukrainian (including many of the people who've been killed since 24th February 2022).

ok.... so.... I have friends in Nyiregyhaza, Hungary. When I am there the sign outside town to ukrainian border reads Ungvar. What is Ungvar? It's Uzhgorod. Magyars say this is a hungarian city stolen by Stalin at Yalta and put into USSR, which is the case. Now the fun with the name Uzhgorod, that makes me laugh all the time is that gorod by the river Uzh well as per the polish-similar ukrainian language, should be named in fact Uzhmisto because місто, or in polish miasto is the name for "city", but gorod ie. город is the russian name for "city". Hahaha. kurwa eh? There is much to tell about Ivano-Frankovsk and Tarnopol too,, as well as Czernowitz. But the key point is that in Europe pluri-national countries are a staple: Belgium is made of two very different nations Flemings and Walloons, and only catholicism is a common, Switzerland has FOUR official languages, it speaks italian in Bellinzona, german in Zürich, french in Lausanne and a smaller minor language in a central canton, Spain: Catalonians, Basquians and Spaniards proprer said, Finland: Finns and Swedes. Germany shares same language but is split in religion: catholicism, lutheranism. In 1991 I recall when Czechoslovakia friendly split into two sovereign countries. Czechia and Slovakia. Everybody in the "West" was applauding. Yet the language difference czech-slovak is quite minor compared to ukrainian-russian. Not peacefully, from 1992, Germany insisted that Yugoslavian Federation had to be split by war and blood in mono-national/ethnic countries: Slovenia Croatia, Serbia etc. In 2014, Ukraine should have turned into a federation with strong local autonomies like Belgium or Switzerland. Period. As for Galician banderists, I had personal troubles with some yet I am not even a Slavic. UPA should not exist and banderists have to be killed. Simple
@ayararesara6253
@ayararesara6253 2 месяца назад
"город is the russian name for "city"" Wrong, город is an old term for fortified settlement, and russian equivalent is град actually. Also name Ужгород was put in use back in Czechoslovakia. And hungarians robbed Czechoslovakia to begin with, so they have no rights to complain ar Stalin. It's not up to foreigners to decide someone's else political administration. Especially when Ukraine is monoethnical country with one ethnicity being a majority in all 24 oblasts.
@minutte
@minutte 2 месяца назад
@@ayararesara6253 yes I know the etymology, ie. the history of the word город and град .And these words are from scandinavian garðr ie. gaard in modern danish or gård in modern norwegian and swedish. You read the Sagas and see the mention of Gardarike for Russia ie. the kingdom of the "gård"(er). gård->gorod. And etymology aside город and град do actually mean "city" nowadays. In russian you say город for city. Exple: В каком городе вы живете? In case you didn't get, I reminded of this because the word used in ukrainian/galician is a Polish word: miesta/miesto. Hence the irony ffor instance of the name of the city by the river Uzh: Uzhgorod in that context
@ayararesara6253
@ayararesara6253 2 месяца назад
@@minutte There's no irony, it's just an old lexic. Today "город" in ukrainian is literally a garden for vegetables, but no one has such assosiations and everyone understand what real etymology is. So you need to be uneducated to laugh at Uzhgorod and not at "Uzhmisto".

I've noticed a frequent linguistic oddity in both Ukrainian and Russian: the word _treat_ is synonymous with _regard, view_ or _look upon,_ in the sense of _have an opinion about._ In English _treat_ means _to behave towards (a person or thing)._ One may have a certain opinion of something or someone, yet treat (behave towards) it/them in another way. For example, a conversation in English might go as follows: 1st person: "What do you think of Americans?" 2nd person: "I have a poor opinion of them." 1st person: "And how do you treat them?" 2nd person: "Well, I'm careful to treat them decently. I wouldn't want to be unfair to an individual, give offence, or display prejudice gratuitously." In contrast, here's a native English-speaker talking to a Russian or Ukrainian: 1st person: "What do you think of Americans?" 2nd person: "I treat them negatively." 1st person: "Your opinion of Americans is not good?" 2nd person: "Yes, I just told you that." 1st person: "Ok, sorry. And how do you behave towards them?" 2nd person: "Well, I'm careful to behave decently towards them. I wouldn't want to be unfair to an individual, give offence or display prejudice gratuitously." 1st person: "But you treat them negatively?" 2nd person: "Yes. You seem confused for some reason." It’s interesting they say we are different but we are Ukrainian so why have all Russian language and religion been banned from the country especially in the east
@1midnightfish
@1midnightfish 7 месяцев назад
No religion has been banned in Ukraine: Ukrainians are trying to shake off the muscovite church - which is basically a branch of the FSB - and that's a very different thing. And no one is prevented from speaking russian in the day-to-day lives, but Ukrainian is the state language and must be used by anyone providing service. The russian language has been heavily weaponised by putin's regime and used to justify a genocide, so no wonder people have lost their patience with it. Besides, many Ukrainians have been directly traumatised by people speaking russian, and it's understandable that they don't want to hear it. There are Ukranians who've escaped the temporarily occupied areas who now refuse to speak russian, even though it's their native language and they're not yet as fluent in Ukrainian. I know this for a fact, I have met them.

It is not about differences between east and west. I believe the difference is about the feeling of where you belong. East part feel like they are Russian. West part feel like they are NOT Russian. You can sense it yourself. As a regular business traveler, I see no difference between east part of Ukraine and Russia. It is really same. West part is different though. So, it is not about cultural differences. They don't feel like they are Ukrainian. I know many of you don't want to hear it or maybe you think it is a lie but it is true. To me, people from east of Ukraine is warmer. They are more open. They want to communicate more and they like foreigners more. If you ask me, if these difference of "feeling" is enough to split a country? My answer is of course not. Ukraine should stay as it is. But they shouldn't have pushed the Russian part of the people down and kill the oppositions before 2004 (edit: I wrote it wrong, it should have been 2014, not 2004). They did ethnic cleansing to "clean" Russian side of eastern Ukraine. Western countries pushed "nationalism" in Ukraine for many years, and this is the result. Result: East doesn't like to be west and that's it.
@Coconautify
@Coconautify 7 месяцев назад
Maybe that was the feeling once, but I doubt it very much anymore.... maybe you should explain that to relatives of the family of 9 murdered in their sleep by two Russian soldiers in Donetsk, or the family of the young boy murdered in cold blood in the occupied part of Kherson. I believe Russia has successfully destroyed any fraternal feelings that might of once existed for the vast majority of Ukrainians across its entire territory.

@@devansa125 The funny thing is that nobody needs you to tell them that some Ukrainian soldiers often communicate in russian - we know . I've seen some battlefields videos, and also follow a number a number of military bloggers who do sometimes talk about language - some have Ukrainian as a first language, some russian, some habitually speak surzhyk, and switch from one to the other as the situation requires. In a crisis it makes sense to use one's easiest language, and which language that is depends on the person at that particular moment (for me, for example, my easiest language is my second, not my first). You don't actually deserve this much typing - I'm writing this for anyone else who may come across this thread at some point. And in that spirit, I'll mention a language-related fact that happened in Ukraine a month or so ago: a well-know university lecturer, blogger and TV personality (Iryna Farion) lost her job after stating in an interview that any Ukrainian who still speaks russian, she does not consider to be Ukrainian; she singled out russian speakers in the armed forces. And while she did get some public support, overall Ukrainians didn't like that at all, and nor did the authorities and her employer. So much for the persecution of russian speakers in Ukraine.

@@devansa125 What rubbish. It is obvious to anyone paying even passing attention that there is no civil war in Ukraine, not even the one that putin & co have been trying to fuel for years. And no russian-speaking person is or ever will be a second class citizen of Ukraine, as long as they follow the law and use Ukrainian when required, i.e. when providing a service to others. Which they will be able to do, because most Ukrainians are bilingual. I myself have a russophone Ukrainian relative, who is really happy to see Ukrainian gaining more and more traction in the country. The current aversion to the russian language in the wider population is completely understandable, considering it's the language of the attempted genocide. Reintegration of the occupied territories will be a challenge, but there are already people working on how to do this in whatever way is best for the country and the population. No one - NO ONE - will miss the occupiers once they're gone. The collaborators will just follow them when they go, unless SBU gets to them first. It will take a while, but Ukraine will emerge from this latest attempt to destroy it, and transition into the bright future it is now fighting so hard for.

There are restrictions that were placed in 2022 after the start of the war that in some ways impact russia's ability to utilize certain channels for spreading propaganda, but in no way ban or place restrictions on the general usage of the russian language by Ukrainian citizens. Specifically, restrictions were place that prevented russian citizens from printing books (unless they take Ukrainian citizenship), the import of books from russia (seems reasonable given that Ukraine and russia are at war, and part of that war is a very obvious psychological and propaganda war against the combined Ukraine / west), and the usage of music created by post-1991 russian citizens.
