Good review as always Damian. I loved my 325d M-Sport (many years back), 6 cylinder BMW dervs are well engineered. I guess another downside now for an owner has to be the tolerance to allowing them into major towns and cities, this is only going to expand across the board and complicate life for some. Look forward to the next one.
I bought a 335d 2 tears ago. Got it mapped with a larger intercooler to keep the temperatures safe. As a result 419.5 bhp and 756 Nm torque. Never stops putting a smile on my face
Collecting my 2017 335d M-Sport Xdrive Shadow in the morning... An immensely impressive car. Got to be one of the world's fastest diesel cars! 4.8s 0-60 yet capable of over 40mpg! Mental... can't wait!
@@DamoDrives WOW! Averaged 28mpg today... Needless to say it was an enjoyable day. Done nearly 100 miles on local roads. And humbled a 14reg C63 AMG joining the motorway.... Well impressed!
Thank you for sharing the experience on day one of many enjoyable days to come 👏 it’s all the torque which makes this car so good. On a slightly different note this Friday nights video is a 740bhp M6 with 900nm #BigBoyPantsRequired
I have the 435d Gran Coupé and yes the amount of torque is impressive, in fact it's the same as an 8 litre Dodge Viper. I usually get 42mpg quite easily. If I want to have some fun it's very stealthy because it's quiet as well. It's a bit of a sleeper really. Awesome all round car, it's basically a 5 door hatchback. Very highly recommended. 👍
Thank you that’s very kind of you to say, I try and do that with all my videos and to be honest I am very down to earth, don’t have fancy cars so love driving everything 😊😊
In germany we say: hoch wie ein bus.... I´m now a proud owner of a bmw f32 435d and i couldn't be happier. In my opinion the 435d is the best choice for a great daily
@@DamoDrives im considering the car and you hit on some important points(back seats for example). Hope the ride can be a little subtle when needed, i don't want it to throw my teeth out in day to day city driving. I'll see with a test run i suppose. Keep it up buddy
Really good video! I'm planning to buy a 435d in the next few months, have no choice but to get a diesel because of my long commute to work on motorway miles. Can't wait to experience the performance of this car!
It’s brilliant and even not having a long commute is a very good choice. Yes the M4 is faster and has more trick parts to go quicker but love the slightly more relaxed drive and the huge amount of torque
Glad you enjoyed the review, it is a brilliant car and especially with all the torque it makes it relaxing to drive. Still waiting to arrange a drive of the M4 of the same year and see how it compares
real world is 35 mpg in the 435 i got 50 doing 55 all the way to Stockport to get it mapped. acceleration great in both but I prefer the bmw due to the 8 speed auto box. had that mapped too and is incredible
With the very controversial look of the new 4 Series (which we may get used to in a years time) I'm sure we will see used ones of this version holding their value very well, as buyers initially hold off buying the large grilled new ones. Though I do not own a diesel, its a fact that new ones are as environmental (if not more so) than their Petrol counterparts, and as such I believe they should be treated the same in city centers. I am surprised the mainstream media shy away from making that fact known. Another very good review from MSDC!
Thank you for your kind words, I am looking forward to seeing a new 4 series in the flesh and see if the grill seems as big as the pictures. I think diesels have such a bad image it’s brave to say otherwise and the government enforcing diesels to stop being made does not help. I really like the new large grills on the new BMWs and not sure what all the fuse is about, many manufacturers have large or even larger grills (Lexus being a good example)
Hey! Great review, such a hidden gem of a car. Yes believe it or not your car did 0-60 in 4.4 seconds without using the in-built launch control, you have to knock the gearbox into sport 😋 but wow, what an incredible car
Great review, btw the vents on the front fenders on all F platform 4 series are all functional and you can see the tire profile through it if you look carefully down the side of the car. Very cool feature.
I have just checked because I will be purchasing one soon, but it's only the 2016 version which gives you 630nm torque, before & after only gives you 465...(looking on Auto trader) which is still really good from your demonstration of the 0-6.....its advertised as 4.7s 0-60 and you got it in 4.4s without the launch control. Definitely will be getting one. Great Review 👍🏾
Had seen that torque figure on autotrader aswell. It shows 630 lb/ft not nm for the 16 car. Also the facelift version of 465 lb/ft which is 630 in Nm. So I think autotrader made a mistake on that one as 630 lb/ft is 854Nm stock 😂😂😂.
@@alexfernandes3402 yeah I had noticed that too yesterday when I was looking at the cars full specs. I don't know much about car's.... But wanting to learn more about the mechanics of a vehicle. Next step is learning the difference between ft lbs torque & nm torque! Also plan on doing performance upgrades and whatnot so I want to know my stuff so I am able to explain to people what I have had done to the car without sounding like an idiot that's been watching too much Fast & Furious 😅 Thanks for the information, really appreciate it 👍🏾
@@alexfernandes3402 just googled the difference 😅 such a simple explanation! One is Metric measurements and the other is imperial 😂 I feel like such an idiot now!
I think he mentioned "0-60 in 4.7 seconds" on the video, but BMW quote that for 0-100kph. It should do 0-60mph in about 4.5 seconds. I've owned a stock 2016 335D before, and that recorded a 4.35 second 0-60 using Dragy. I've got an 18 plate 435D coming next week, so it'll be interesting if it's quicker than the 3 series.
Looking forward to driving an M4 (should be early next year and a 2017 model so like for like with this) but I have been blown away with the new M5 Comp last weekend
I enjoyed this review, thanks. In answer to your question about the M4....it really is in a different league in terms of performance. On a motorway dual for example it would leave you behind almost instantly and the handling is superior. That being said, with the 435d you will get the power down more often than not on our not so great British roads.. Also with the N57 straight six you will get a fantastic mix of torqy driving characteristics, as you've just proven in the video. They are brilliant fun these cars without a doubt and not many people realise this until they drive and own one. Super comfortable and frugal on long journeys too which is something the M4 can't compete on....18-20 mpg with a hard suspension and an annoying amount of engine drone when cruising. For me, the best combo with this engine is the 335d touring with adaptive suspension. I used to have one of these which was 18 plate in Tanzanite blue which I have regretted changing ever since. I'm now thinking about going for another one as the M340d (new B57 engine version) is blimin expensive.
Glad you enjoyed the review, once lockdown is over I should be able to get an M4 on the channel (a subscriber has a rather nice 2018 M4 comp) i would expect the handling to be better on the M4 and looking forward to trying the mid range pickup on the m4 as well
I’ve got a 435d gran coupe which looks miles better than the 3 door. Also got a stage 1 map giving 380bhp and 575 ft lb (780 nm). It is an absolute weapon, and that torque makes it feel ballistic
I’m looking at one of these and though about mapping it too. I heard the ZF box can on lot handle 700nm of torque though… Could get awkward if the map pushes you to nearly 800! 😬
I’m looking to get a 435d in the near future, was originally after a 430d but that extra power for not much extra cost I can’t resist. And I’ve seen you can get 50+mpg quite easily when motorway cruising. Who wouldn’t want that?
Bit confused as to why the engine sound is put down so much. It sounds amazing even through the video audio. Has a nice roar to it. Is it really that bad?
Thank you. Is a really smart looking car and used is actually a sensible price (well sensible compared to a new car) not driven an M4 yet so need to do that and see how much better it is
It’s a motorway car designed and built for munching the miles at a speed most of us are not accustomed to here in the UK. It needs to be driven at motorway speeds and for extended periods of time. If you don’t drive a lot of fast miles this is not the car for you. Check out some of the petrol versions. The 430i and 435i (xdrive) are as equally enjoyable to drive and own. Watch for the options packages fitted to some of these models. There are some very nicely specified cars out there. If in the market be patient and make yourself familiar. The LCi cars have some equipment available in them that rival the later model at bargain prices.
Excellent review. I'm considering a 435d Xdrive convertible to replace my 2nd car so this has been useful. I realise boot space will be compromised in the convertible but as an all rounder it has to be one of the best on the market.
Hello Hugh. Did you get that diesel convertible by now ? I am at the same point right now, but do still hesitate for a diesel in a convertible, the one I have recently test driven (435d xDrive from 2019), left me with some unpleasant smell in the nose and even a kind of dizzy head… Don’t know if it was just this particular car or if this is inherent to open roofs drive. What are your experiences so far ? Thanks for your reply and sorry for my bad English ! Cheers from the Alps
Hi Damian, I’ve seen you driven a MK8 Fiesta ST Performance Edition. I own one of them at the moment. I’m considering this car in a few years time when the price has decreased a bit and when I need a more ‘grown up’ car. I know how reliable this Diesel engine is which is why I’m pulling towards this car, and Ford Ecoboost engines having the reputation they have, I don’t want to keep the fiesta for too long 😂. If I changed to the 435D in a few years? Do you think I’ll miss the ST? I’m aware of the massive torque upgrade and the higher power, but I’m also aware of the extra weight, and I know this is a heavy car. I’m unsure as to if I changed the ST to this, that if it would be a stupid decision or not. I would be interested to hear your opinion. 😊
It’s a very different type of car especially as you go from fwd to RWD. The BMW is certainly a better all round car and a lot of fun and with so much torque it pulls like a train. The fiesta is not as refined or well built but is great on backroads and the fact you can push it more to its limits with out breaking the speed limit is a massive plus. You will miss the fiesta on the odd occasion but the 435d is just a better package and you do feel special behind the wheel. Hope that helps, also a few small mods can give you good increase in performance if you need more.
@@DamoDrives Hi Damian, I appreciate you gave such a quick reply especially at this time in the morning. I had a Fiesta Ecoboost ST-Line ever since I was 18 right up until I was 20 and at 18, it felt like a quick car but as I got older I noticed that it’s not as quick as what I first thought it was. Hence I bought the ST, for that extra performance, and chose the PE. Don’t get me wrong I agree with you on the performance side of it, the 1.5 engine pulls really nicely from stock and I don’t feel the need to remap it. Even though I’m still only 21, I feel like I’ve matured in driving, like I’ve slowed down a bit and focused more on economy rather than all out performance, I still like a fast feeling car though haha. The PE feels like such a special car with it being limited edition and having coilovers, etc. I would feel like I’m giving up a very special car, so I’m really in conflict with myself as to what I would be the better car to have. I agree with you though, the 4 series is much better as a daily all rounder
Hi Damian thanks for your reply on my mapping question I’m not sure where it’s gone here in the comment section. The car I’m looking at doesn’t have a logbook as it was misplaced. Would this be a deal breaker or could you look past it. I’ve done a reg check and got the health check report and that all looks good. Cheers
You would need a log book but can order a new 1 (the V5 is not proof of ownership) might be worth spending a bit of money and get someone like the RAC or AA to do an inspection on the car
This does have launch control You need to press the brake hard then floor the throttle. The chequered flag will come up on dash and let the brake off Boosh Becareful not to do.to often a warning will come up than you may damage gear box
The 435d is a fast car, alot of torque. Off the line it takes the m4 as its 4 wheel drive, the m4 back tyres are spinning, dosent hold the power down.i know I had an m4.
I did that to my 335d and wish I didn't. It was so effortlessly fast, I kept finding my speed creeping up very quickly, and it also encouraged me to drive it too fast. I've now got an F36 435d and I'm leaving it as standard this time!
@@jamesWilliams-pg4ye Not sure it's exactly the same - different engine code, N57D30O1 vs N57D30T1. Surely if it was just the two turbos it'd have the same base engine code as turbos are not part of the engine?
There is no doubt that the 435D and its sister 335D are increadible machines capabale of loads of fun driving and embarrasing a lot of so called performance vehicles mostly by being able to get the power down more quickly with the xdrive system. My 335D has, and still, is a fantastic package in so many ways, its no M3/M4 dont get me worng but it will worry the rear wheel drive only versions off the line easily. Only pain with these is make sure you ignore the BMW service recommendations like oil / filter at 18,000 / 2 years, which is quite simply a recipe for massive bills later in its life. Oil /filter service should be 10,000 miles or one year at the absolute worst and lifetime gearbox oil/filter!!!!! dont make me laugh BMW, even the gearbox manufacturer recommends 60,000 miles. Other issues are how many options there were when speccing a new one, trust me searcing for a used one, once you have learned about the options available, with the toys you want on it is a bloody nightmare. Having said that prices right now are super strong and even more so if it is highly specced. Perhaps a video going through the options available on these would be good. I would be more than willing to help with that.
Nice review, thanks! Regarding the sound. Can put some nice aftermarket exhaust like Akrapovich or Milltech and it will sound even better than M4. Regarding the looks. I still think pre-face lift rear lights looked a bit better.
@@DamoDrives Bad, it was offputing and I drive diesel car now. But of you ignore this, then it is great engine. Especially for autobahn wherr you drive 100mph+
You know I'm watching this now . And the same example of the car. A year later is the same price. That's how much all good vehicles have gone up. Above average. Come down soon please.
