Would love to see a "food rescue" badge, give them a couple of serves that are too salty, sugary and/or acidic and they have to balance them out, make sure it includes something that has split or is unrecoverable so they can learn that sometimes its best to just start again
And the thing is, he's been part of the channel to know that if your mayo is runny but not separated, it's because you haven't added enough oil. He just straight up faffed it.
Kitchen etiquette. When to turn hobs and the oven on or off, keeping all your knives, plates and bowls in order, washing things you used, cleaning surfaces.
You should give all the normals a food hygiene badge and confiscate it whenever they cross contaminate. It'd be quite funny to see these being handed out and taken away throughout the journey.
I've honestly been impressed by Jamie's performance since last year. He has definitely improved, and become more organised and precise. It's a stark contrast to the early days when Jamie in kitchen meant chaos, it still means chaos but just more controlled chaos
Jamie's basic photography badge win will probably forever be my favourite moment of this entire chef skills challenge series. Sound of Silence duet is a close second.
Jamie still flops in most "Pass It On"s, but when he has full control and a bit more time to prepare things, he is almost always a close contender for first place, he's become pretty good :D
I reckon he's matured a bit, in a really good way. His "bit of a lad" shtick often used to come across (to me anyway) more as just mean and unnecessarily disruptive. Now it's fun and entertaining. Maybe fatherhood has been a good influence?
Jamie’s gone from being the kind of chaos where someone more likely than not going to end up bloody to the kind of chaos where he’s probably just going to derail a Pass It On idea.
Gotta love both Jamie's and Mike's faces as Ben revealed he rescinded a badge! First reaction: "Oh shit, Barry lost a badge!" Second reaction: "Oh shit, Ben can revoke badges..."
It's easy to forget just what good musicians Mike and Jamie are. That was the kind of effortless blending that only really good mates can just snap into.
I love this format - having the normals complete skills surrounding a topic, “chicken”, and getting badges involved in each step. Best video in the badge series yet!
I just want to say this was the most relaxed I've seen Jamie in a while in the kitchen. He did such a fantastic job and has really improved so much!!! Also I think one of the badges should be the ABCs of fruits and veggies and they have to identify them in dishes, visually, or blind test
@@graphenaishata7960 oh yes that's absolutely true. I wish there was a way to help someone who is color blind to know which veggies are which. Like guides at stores for example
@@katy4523, the only produce I can think of that tastes different based on color is apples, and they are labeled by varieties. Even grapes don't taste much different by color. Bell peppers do, but they are labeled by color and green peppers are much cheaper so you could go by that.
Blind tasting would be interesting, since most veggies in a dish are not there to stand out, but to blend in and harmonize with the rest of the dish. They'd really have to work for that one.
19:42 When Ben revealed Barry had lost a badge, I love how Jamie’s FIRST reaction was horror FOR Barry, in sympathy. He knew how gutted Barry would be. It’s cool that, even though these three boys are competitive, they still genuinely care about each other. (And yes, I’m sure it very quickly occurred to him afterwards to feel horror for *himself*, as he realised all his badges have the potential to be similarly rescinded. But in that first moment, it was all sympathy for Baz.) Edited to add: Haha, it didn’t stop Mike and Jamie from roasting Barry at the end though. “Is there a ‘How to following instructions’ badge that maybe you could go for?”
I feel like they should have it, but not announce what the badge is (its like a secret extra badge to earn during a video where they're earning a different badge)
12:04 Barry reacting like Ben's a parent whose taken his phone away from him for a few days or something is just hilarious but also a little heartbreaking lol
Something along the lines of a Timing badge. Being able to cook things without using a timer. Chicken, pasta, etc. You have to know how to tell it's done, without the crutch of a clock. As others have said - very impressed with Jaime in these challenges. He's really stepped up. Mike is starting to as well.
@@SortedFood God I've not laughed this hard since last time Barry suffered. Am I a bad person for taking pleasure in Barry's suffering? Probably. But its still hilarious.
@@OfficialZoone16 He can make mayo in another challenge/battle and get the badge. I hope he tries, but I don't think he'll be able to get the spice badge back in a normal challenge.
After witnessing Jamie's and Mike's stunning singing skills: I'd like a "cooking sing along" batch, chef Ebbers included in the competition this time. 😊 Maybe with a guest with actual singing skills who can award them - and then compete in a cook off in return? Something along those lines would be great. 🥳
Actually the photography badge was unfair. It wasnt about photography, it was about the dish. It should have been the same dish for all 3 of them, then make the best picture.
@@wernerlindorfer3693 not really. it was BASIC Photography. Barry took it too professional and didnt make the dish look good. He cared more about the background and the stuff around (also his angle made the dish look far worse then it was).
@@wernerlindorfer3693 You have to keep in mind that this is a food channel for cooking. So you have to make photogenic food and then take a good picture of it. He did neither of those things.
This was brilliant, Mike and Jamie's reaction to Barry losing a badge and not getting one was priceless, and the Sound of Silence at the end surprised me with how well done it was, and Barry's reaction to it made me chuckle.
Massive props on the move with rescinding the spice badge. Honestly thought it was a massive mistake when Barry got it and was obviously just wildly guessing. This whole thing should be about improved lasting knowledge and that move today was a great nod to that. Also great episode. Jamie has made a massive improvement over the years especially.
I think you missed out an important bit in this video - how to salvage Barry's failed mayo. How to identify when it's failing, why it's failing, and if it's beyond salvaging.
If I were to venture a guess, it might be that he added the oil too quickly - in the initial phase you have to add oil in tiny quantities or very very slowly to start the emulsification(?)
To save it, he has to start with a new egg and a bit of mustard in a clean bowl, whisk that egg constantly while drizzling a tiny bit of the split mixture in at a time (basically doing a new mayonnaise with the split mixture as the oil part). Or he could leave it still until it splits completely and then blitz it again with a stick blender. The fully separated mixture will whiz up, but simply blitzing the egg into the half-split mixture would not work - I had the experience when I made my first mayonnaise. Agreed with the comment above about him probably adding oil too fast, it was what happened with my first mayo.
@@rulitossimplyrulitos1088 Yes, though it's really important to have clear instruction on how to do it. I used 2-3 eggs in the first day trying to blitz it into my split mayo like some people suggest ("Just beat in another egg" they said!) - definitely full of shit haha. Was very worried that the half cup of EVOO I put in it would go to waste. But then the starting again with a new egg in a new bowl and slowly drizzle in works like a charm!
On the chef skill challenges, I'd love to see Ben do the challenges at the beginning so it's easy to see what "Right looks like" for when the normals make their attempts
I think this may have genuinely been my absolute FAVOURITE episode - I was howling at points (mainly at Barry - #SorryNotSorry). The bit where Ben took away his Spiceology Badge!!! Priceless and Go Ben! Love the firmness #BennuendosRule
Food waste badge: must know whether ingredients are perfectly fresh, still good in some applications, or compost. Must also know which parts of a whole ingredient are edible and how to use them. #sortedchefskills
This could actually be one of the best "comedy short films" I have ever seen and the twist with what happened near the end was hilarious but also informative.
The improvement in Jamie in the past few years honestly gives me hope that I can get my life together and finally learn how to fry an egg to perfection!
Want my fool proof method? Oil up a nonstick pan, crack your eggs in, put it on a cold element/hob/burner (whatever you want to call it), cover with a lid of some sort, turn the heat on to medium high. Eventually you'll hear some crackles and popping and that's when you check your egg. Cover with lid and leave on for a few more seconds at a time to desired doneness. The gradual increasing heat will help cook the whites thoroughly, the lid will help it cook from the top as well, and the yolks will remain completely runny.
What I do is this: Cooking spray in a nonstick pan, flame on high, crack the eggs into a bowl and then pour them into the hot pan. Cover for 30 seconds or until the outer white is set. Throw an ice chip OR a tablespoon of cold water in the pan and cover for 15-30 seconds, until yolks are just clouded over. Yolk should be runny and perfect for dipping. Learned this steaming trick by watching DDD. Thank you, Guy Fieri.
Somewhere in the background Janice is probably going "oh dear oh dear!" at Barry's plight. Maybe somebody best lends Barry a copy of the book Science of Spice!
Best episode ever!! Sincere focus from the boys. Skills truly tested. Barry realizing he might want to step it up a bit. Then ending with an amazing harmony. Thanks, gentlemen. Truly made my night.
TLDR: Escoffier said five mother sauces. Mayonnaise is one of them, the four others are bechamel, tomato sauce, velouté and brown sauce. Hollandaise is a translation error.
Barry, I am no one of particular import, so this should mean absolutely nothing to you, but I am so, so sorry how much I laughed throughout this episode at your expense. I have not half the skills in the kitchen as you have which means I have no right to cackle condescendingly as I did. I sincerely wish you the best of luck in all future Chef Skills Challenges. 😂😂😂
Jaime is really impressing me. He continues to give solid and, sometimes, inspired skill presentations. I think he's going to win the year. Mike has really improved. If "most improved" qualified for a win, I'd say Mike has that nailed. Barry...bless his heart. He lets his ego and bravado run away from him. He shows some strong skills but always ends up falling down if the slightest thing goes wrong. If he loses the bravado and can roll with the punches, he could upset everything and take the win.
He has always been top tier, but the boys just keep gaslighting him into not believing it because he's goofy..... and the international incident he caused.
I love Mike's "You took it away for the fir- What?" after getting the news. I guess they didn't know Ben had the power to take away badges until now (I don't remember if Ben or James ever took away badges before).
From the schadenfreude over Barry's loss, to the shock/realization that they too could potentially lose badges, to the confusion and hilarity that Barry didn't know what goes in Dukkah, and full circle to schadenfreude again. The range of emotions was *chef's kiss*
Where the hell did that perfect harmony come from?! Where have Jamie and Mike been hiding that talent? More importantly, WHY have they been hiding that talent?!?!
Would love a chef skills challenge about allergies and or food preferences!! Like the boys get a recipe and then they need to make substitutions to make it gluten free/lactose free/vegan etc. It’s such an important skill for normals as well, hopefully this year can bring some more dinner parties! 🙏
now I WANT to hear the rest so of the song for sound of silence!! That little bit at the end was AMAZING guys. the harmony was REALLY GOOD!! Who knew the boys could sing as well..
Mike and Jamie harmonizing at the end was just amazing. Also, their reaction to Barry losing a badge was like a child who realized their parent wasn't kidding about a punishment. lol
Ben last week: "I think Barry knows who is handing out badges the rest of the year" Ben this week: "I think I'm going to take away badges from Barry the rest of the year" Barry, you played yourself.
This episode has so much in it, Mike and Jamie have improved so much, Barry losing a badge (and the justification thereof) was hilarious, but that Sound of Silence at the end was amazing, need a full version
@@SortedFood Well until I recently graduated College I watched your videos for the past two years. My campus had a horrible cafeteria so watching you guys cook or try beautiful delicious food somehow made my brain think happy thoughts and made my food taste better. Now that I'm back to my own home cooking your videos just enhance my meals flavour. Lol I'm sure that makes no sense but if it ain't broke don't fix it:)
@@re_animatedabby6791 Hah, I do the same, but without the history of a horrible cafeteria! I think it's a feature of the human brain. I remember my regular sandwiches tasting better when I was reading a scrumptious buffet described in a novel, years ago; and this channel has the same effect. It functions as the eye candy to complement the sensation from our tastebuds and nostrils, it feels like.
First off I would like to say Mike and Jamie harmonized beautifully in the outro and I eagerly await them to drop thier 1st album. Secondly, Mike faces when Barry got mad at the end was absolutely pricless. Keep the amazing content coming and I cannot wait to see who eventually wins the badges competition.
