I want to address the "why didn't you warn people" critics on this video. There are several reasons why this is a completely unreasonable thing to expect me to do. First, of all, these videos are shot during winter storms when roads and bridges are icy across multiple states. Authorities and DOT crews are well aware of the conditions, in fact, you can see plows working during my videos. Furthermore, police officers have told me to stop trying to warn drivers roadside. Their vehicles with bright flashing lights are often hit by out of control cars and trucks. Do you get winter weather (ice and snow) where you live? I'm assuming then, if you are one of those who think that it is somehow effective or advisable for civilians to be waving down drivers/putting up signs on the side of a dangerously icy road, that YOU do this where you live during winter storms? If not, then why do you expect ANYONE to do it, especially TV cameramen out doing their jobs? Can you cite one example of where you've seen this civilian "roadside warning" during winter storms being performed and it being effective? Ask what law enforcement and EMS personnel think of this idea, when their big vehicles with bright flashing lights are routinely hit by out of control drivers. The "why don't you warn" idea is a knee-jerk one by people who aren't at all thinking about what they are saying. Furthermore, there are videos on my channel that show me warning drivers during bridge icing in the South - one of those rare times that it had even a remote chance of working. And even then, I could not get people to notice me unless I stepped into the road IN FRONT OF THEM, frantically waving. Police officers on the scene told me to NOT to do it. I have spent 9 years on the icyroadsafety.com site trying to educate and warn the driving public AHEAD OF TIME. It's just incredible how some think I should put my life on the line along icy roads in a futile attempt to prevent a couple of fender benders. If you think that this roadside warning is something that should be done, then I expect YOU to try doing it yourself in your neighborhood during the next winter storm - then tell me how it went for you. I would also like you to ask any police officer or first responder what they think of your actions.

In our area we have signs stating "Bridges Freeze Before Roadway" and I assume that most places that normally have slick roads to have the same signs. But maybe some areas don't (where winter weather is not problematic for drivers). Thanks for trying to educate people thru your channel!

@@TRDang1 -- I haven't had a rear-wheel-drive vehicle as my own daily driver since 1991. Ha! I like small cars, with front-wheel-drive. The same over-steer and under-steer principles of physics apply, and I'm not convinced that either pulling or pushing the weight of the car in a winter slide has an advantage over the other. It's all about the 'intangible forces' of the moment combined with whatever skill and calm reaction a driver can command in a crisis. I think that 4WD and variants of All-Wheel-Drive have *_definitely_* made people complacent and too assured. I work with a guy who drives an Audi that's a few years old, and he says "I just flip on Traction Control and the car basically drives itself." This is a guy who's used to Northeast winters. EDIT: That Audi is a 6-speed manual, too. Ha!

Amazed at how many idiots drive in winter weather, rain, including white outs with NO LIGHTS ON! Then if you do spin out, put your flashers on and try and get off on the side or shoulder if able to. And just SLOW DOWN! Hats off to the people who reacted cool under pressure like I saw a number of truck drivers do . Great videos, I think watching these can actually help people to see how and what to do and NOT DO when encountering these road conditions. 27 years of driving truck, majority of that pulling doubles , has taught me a lot with just doing some of the small things, small adjustments in speed,braking,acceleration to maintain control and handle when you do lose traction. Black ice is definitely the worst ! Stay safe out there people, getting ready to see what this winter has to offer 😅

Can I ask, does driver training in the US include a technical/advanced driver course? To clarify: Here, every driver must pass a practical driving test on a closed circuit consisting of various tests in dry and simulated icy roads, both with modern safety systems but also with those systems disabled. Does something like this apply to US driver training. Living in a Scandinavian country, I've never seen cars on a straight road just loose control. ESP has been mandantory for over a decade here, anti lock brakes for over two decades. I'm seeing, that even recent cars in the video are skidding along with locked wheels. Are these systems not mandantory in the US? I understand that some of the roads are extremely slippery judging from the cars behavior, but most of the clips are what I would consider fairly common winter conditions, like normally iced over roads. I see some road service about half way through. Do they apply gravel or salt to the road? Is this not done preventively based on the weather forecasts? And finally, are winter tires (not mud and snow, but actual winter tires) not mandantory or at least common in the US? (I'm asking if curiosity, been to the US three times but never did serious winter driving there.)
@michaelcoulter1114
@michaelcoulter1114 8 лет назад
+Nicoleise Most drivers in the USA don't have enough practice in genuine winter conditions to have any idea of how to handle skids, or spinning out. I'm Canadian, and even here there are *so* many drivers who are useless on slick roads. Only a few Canadian provinces make winter tires mandatory, which is foolish, as they can make the difference between safe driving, and spending the night in the ditch. We don't have to have extreme driver training courses, either - I don't know why, as it could really help educate people who lack experience in winter driving. Peace
@michaelcoulter1114
@michaelcoulter1114 8 лет назад
***** People seem to disconnect their brains when they get behind the wheel all year long, but you're right - bad weather does make bad drivers worse! Extreme weather driving classes should be mandatory too, get student drivers on a slick surface, teach them how to steer out of a spin, teach them not to keep their foot on the brakes when they're skidding, and the most important skill of all - *how to slow down when the road conditions are bad!* Too many drivers think their vehicles electronic wizardry will save them when they get into trouble, but they forget that people knew how to control their vehicles before abs, esp, and awd were invented! OMG!!! I sound like my dad used to! I'm old 😢 Lolol, Peace 😃

+Nicoleise No, they give us a license at 16 and they let you hit the highways in whatever HP vehicle you can acquire. Peoples driving skills vary depending on where they are from. When it ices over in places like TX and OK, most of them aren't acclimated to those conditions and this stuff happens.

"These creatures seem incapable of rational thought since, when faced with an emergency situation, their only response is to jam on the brakes, causing their slide to worsen and removing all chance of control. "This is an incredible sight and how these creatures have not yet gone extinct is truly one of the wonders of nature."

True true boii😂😂. I see them constantly. These bunch of crack heads thinkingthe fwd is better than rwd. It is actually worse, because if you fully lose control you are going to crash very badly. The best is to have 4wd with winter tires and you are pretty much set up for even ice, of cource not driving like a maniac. I tried to spin the tires on my 4runner 2nd gen 2.4 td so I put it in 2 wheel drive on a corner and that thing barely spin😂😂. It's because of the solid chassi and heavy weight mainly. So first you have to know how to drive, and to drive well under these conditions you have to crash or atleast lose control a couple of times so you know what your vehicle and you are capable of! Do you agree?
@TheMegaspenny

@@user-gv7st5xk6s mmm i really think front wheel drive is superior.... you can kinda claw yourself out of things by pointing the powered tires where you want to go, as long as you don't lose track of how your tires are pointed.... tuned up e-brake to helps a lot,...ive had close calls where i use the ebrake to get pointed away from the edge of the road then floor it to the front wheels and pull myself back into the road...try that with rear wheel drive. if you "fullly" lose control front, rear or awd, you're gunna have a big time, ....iv spent hours and hours driftin fwd cars in snow working at ski hills and living in caanda....im sure rear wheel drive is fine when ya get used to it...but usually people just apply a lil too much gas and do themselves harm. i aint no crack head....ive got 15 years driving in winter conditions under my belt.

I grew up driving in ice and snow but moved to Washington DC area for a decade. Drivers from warm places all over the country and world come there and put on a master class of what not to do in a car on slippery roads. My favorites are steering into the skid but simultaneously locking the brakes, making any steering input useless. The big spin outs in these videos always have three brake lights on, and the recoveries frequently do not. Another is slipping on an icy incline and flooring it (because faster = more traction right?) then watching the car go sideways into a parked car or roadside obstacle.

I found the car spinning out in snow compilation very scary. The moment at 5:38 was particularly intense, as the car not only spun out of control but also blew up into flames. It's a reminder of just how dangerous driving in snowy conditions can be and how important it is to take precautions and drive slower in such conditions. It's a miracle that the driver managed to get out alive of control but also blew up. It's a good reminder of the dangers of driving in snowy conditions and the importance of being cautious and prepared. It's fortunate that there were no apparent injuries from the explosion, but it's still a sobering reminder of how quickly things can go wrong on the road. Stay safe out there, and make sure to take extra precautions when driving in challenging weather.

Thumbs up Dan. This footage should be shown in driving schools and its lessons apply not only for ice and snow driving but also driving in heavy rain. So it's relevant for many countries. How to steer out of ice slides is taught in only some countries, mostly the Nordics. The right tires for Winter season is crucial since tires are the crucial elemet connecting the vehicle to the road. If the stock tires are for Mud+Snow only, those won't function so well on ice and even with 4WD it might not be enough to steer out of trouble, as evidenced by e.g. 4WD pickups and SUVs (e.g. starting at 9:20) geting into trouble. Studded Winter tires are recommended for places where icy roads are common in the Winter.

Not all of our states have winters bad enough to have them. I live in southeast America and we may have snow once every other year maybe but only for a day or 2 then it’s back to 80 degrees. We have had irregular winters from time to time and had ice storms or heavy snow. However when we get a few inches our state closes all roadways and we stay put. Our northern states however have rough winters so I’m not sure why they don’t have winter tires.

@Wes Peeble Not all states allow them, though. I live in one such state. If they allowed them, I'd have them in the trunk/boot any time it snowed enough to possibly need them. Plus you have to realize how many people would put them on improperly and fling them off while revving out of a ditch, or have them fly off on the highway, wrecking their car and others. I don't trust the average person enough to want them using chains...

In normal countries you have normal cars with ABS brake system. Here only very old cars didn't have it. Today every car has it. And most motorbikes. You don't brake better, but it's more possible to steer with brakes slammed down.
@anthonyferguson7158
@anthonyferguson7158 5 лет назад
What you stated is absolutely not true. That applies on dry roads and even wet, but not ice at all. Locked wheels give zero control. ABS doesn't magically make traction. It can help you use what's available if you're one of those who just stomps the brake pedal. As for motorbikes...Again, you are way off. Generally only high end touring bikes have it at all.

Bridges always freeze before roads. When driving in rain or snow, reduce your speed. I would get turned around to take a different route and there would be another accident blocking the road. This went on 5 times and i was slipping and sliding everywhere but finally managed to get home a lot later than usual. When i finally reached my driveway, i just sat and looked at my house for awhile not believing i made it safe and sound somehow.
