Ultimate Dana 30! This phrase is laughable to many but in the right application these axles can be outstanding! We are building this Dana 30 from the ground up, starting with a high pinion version from a 1999 Jeep Cherokee.
We will be throwing every upgrade at this axle throughout this series.
Gears, lockers, RCV axle shafts and even some lesser known steering and brake upgrades. When paired with my brothers lightweight 2001 Jeep Wrangler this will be a truly indestructible combination!
I'm doing this video as a collaboration with another RU-vid channel called Muddy Beards 4x4. / @muddybeards4x4
The first episode will be done on my channel, the second episode will be done on the Muddy Beards channel and the final episode will be done back on this channel.
Enjoy!

Nice! Pretty much did the same with my JK & 37's. Used a different truss from JCR & also did the gussets. You just have to wheel carefully & since I went with 5.13's I didn't lock the front. Figure my u-joints or axles will be the weak point if something does give way & either are cheap & easy to fix. For me it was the least expensive way to go at the time since I can do my own work/welding. When it goes I'll upgrade to a 44 but it's been going this way for 2 years w/ no signs of any issues what so ever & we wheel our Jeeps. Have to watch the rest of your videos to see how it comes out!

Hello , the dana 30 been working good for you im planing on doing the same but in my case i do competition well somthing like that it call average joe 4x4 and last year i blow my axel but dont want to spend on a dana 60 , sow will you say it will work going to upgrade to 37 and 5.13 gears thanks for you opinion and be safe
@johnmunder7107
@johnmunder7107 4 года назад
@@kenskens69 It's certainly do-able but you'll have to take it easy. As you know the D30 ring & pinion is much smaller than the D44 & obviously the D60 so way easier to break if you start hammering on it. I take my approaches slow and easy & haven't had any issues. With the 5.13's I would not lock it in the front otherwise you are increasing the risk of breaking it. Just my .02 cents. Others may have different results but I've been running it like this for a couple of years with zero issues. Running Yukon gears professionally set up.

Joe Man I did my own gears and it wasn't terrible but there are a few things you will need. set up bearings are a must. I didn't have a press so I put the carrier in the freezer and the bearings in the oven at like 150 degrees. They slipped right on, it was awesome! The hardest part, in my opinion, is getting the right preload on the pinion at the right depth. Good luck with your setup!
@05glisedan

Currently running 33's. Now thinking of 35's. If we do go up, hopefully 4.56 won't be a problem. It'll be mainly highway, will try of wheel often - in Florida trails. With some mud. In the future, hopefully trails in GA, AL, TN, NC. Now thinking of putting on a truss, since the axle will be off anyways. Get it it all done at once.
@ProjectXJ
@ProjectXJ 5 лет назад
@@05glisedan I am running 33's right now but will hopefully go up to 35's soon. I wanted to strengthen my axle before I did. 4.56 is a good gear choice for an auto, go 4.88 if you have a manual. My truss only cost a little over $100, then you just have to get it welded on. Make friends with a welder. lol

I have the same artec setup on my xj, the only problem I had with the outer C brackets is the coils would contact the bottom two spring loops under flex and cause a "bung" noise which is very concerning but I also used the original spring perch. I took material off of the front of the c gussets for clearance and no problem. Interested if these perches eliminate that.

Thanks man 🤘. No issues with a warped housing for us. The way the artec kit is setup it has large gaps across the axle tube making it so you wont weld one continuous bead. Continuous beads are a sure fire way to warp the housing. Small short welds (3" max) will keep you from warping it. 👍

I just did this on some jk 44s for my TJ.... The part that caught my attention was it looked like you set the spring perch at a 9 degree angle? Why wouldn't you have set it at 0 after setting up the pinion angle? Maybe I'm missing something but aren't your springs going to be curving?
@DirtLifestyle
@DirtLifestyle 5 лет назад
If you install the front axle. You want the inner c's to be around 5-10° at ride height. If you weld the lower bucket at 0 then your spring will be curved at ride height. 🤘

What springs and shocks do you think works good together. I run a rough country lift and it's h Just bad
@DirtLifestyle
@DirtLifestyle 5 лет назад
If your looking for good ride quality you need shocks. I really like shocks with an adjustable external reservoir. Being able to fine tune your ride is important. If you have coils they don't really affect your ride. If you have leaf springs then a soft spring can definitely make a difference but shocks are still the biggest change 👍

hey nate is the top of your truss set to the same degree as your pinion angle??

Ok so I’ve got a question hypothetically with a built Dana 30 trusses and RCV shafts and all of the above would they be able to hold up to a 37” tire?

It's definitely beefy! Barely looks like a Dana 30 anymore lol. Thanks brother

I'm guessing this would be the same for a YJ except for the spring mounts and control arms.

Hey did you ever check the axle for straightness before and after welding? I just welded an artec truss and and C gussets and mine pulled so I had to straighten it after, even tho I spread out the welding over a long time. (I don’t know if it was crooked before welding) but I’m curios if you checked yours and how it came out. I measured mine by having bushings machined to fit the bearing caps and a pipe through the axle
@DirtLifestyle
@DirtLifestyle 5 лет назад
I didn't check it for straightness before but that would have been a good idea. I would be willing to bet your axle was bent before you put the truss on. One of my favorite features of the artec truss kit is the fact that there are no long continuous welds. Makes it a lot easier to install without warping the housing. 👍

Yeah I beat my self up not checking before, but what’s done is done and it’s straight now :) thanks for the reply!

Is there any issues using the LP Dana 30 Artec truss on the HP Dana 30? Anything to be aware of?
@DirtLifestyle

I didn't see any issues with the kit we put together but a little grinding here and there is expected as far as I'm concerned. 🤘

Is it absolutely necessary to preheat the outer c’s to weld on the gussets? What did you write “don’t do this”?
@PaulKaiser42
@PaulKaiser42 5 лет назад
This maybe a silly question...but would a truss on a leaf sprung Dana 30 be less affective?? The reason I ask is I’d like to keep the leafs in my yj because I do not need to worry about geometry until a later time 😁😁

A truss is still just as valuable in a leaf sprung Jeep as well!

How do you seal up the damn Dana 30’s? Fist time off-road went through a puddle and blew my axle seals. Second time I got stuck in mud and blew the damn seals again. I don’t get how people off-road these constantly without blowing axle seals.
@DirtLifestyle
@DirtLifestyle 5 лет назад
That's pretty weird man! I've only blown out axle seals from gouging them when I re install a shaft. They make an outer axle seal for the dana 30 that keeps debris out of the housing. Google dana 30 outer axle seal. I know TEN factory makes a set 🤘

Nate I need your help. I currently have 15 JKU and I trying to figure out which route would be best for the front axle. I am a weekend trail wheeler, and drive it everyday. I want to run 37's but am torn between building the dana 30 or swapping to the 44. Without going to an aftermarket axle housing the only thing I would gain would be a bigger ring and pinion. What is your opinion?
