I'm a fleet mechanic who has the privilege of fabricating from time to time. Fabricating is a lot harder than you make it look. I really appreciate your attention to detail and I especially admire your creativity. The project that you just finished is a whopper. Very good job!

Excellent series! I don’t care that it was five episodes. I tell my customers “you can have it good, fast, and cheap. Pick two.” You clearly chose the longer road and that shows in the detail. Nice work.

Thanks for the drill bit info and the explanation about the cutting oil. Does the same hold true for hole saws and which brands work best. Personally I would love to see a video about tools that actually work so I don’t waste my money on substandard tools. I have already added the rivnut tool, angle finder and portable bandsaw. Not just to be like Nate, but because Nate showed me why those tools made the project easier. Keep up the great work Nate, there are many of us that need the know-how.

As usual, great build, series, and video. I actually really appreciate the sponsorship, and plug, for Empire abrasives. As a new fabricator, it's easy for me to get caught up lusting after fancy fab tools, and completely overlook the basics that I'd probably otherwise just purchase from Harbor Freight or something.

Beautiful work, Nate. I don’t think the extended series is a problem because the insight into your process and how you address issues as they come up is fascinating. The other part would be that each part of the series showed significant progress, so we didn’t feel like we were stuck on the same thing over and over. Absolutely fantastic work, both in the fabrication & the video production.

Great series, you are an inspiration. Drillls: I’m a machinist of 40+. For steel in the thickness you are working with, search out a stub length split point cobalt drill. They are a bit more expensive. If you are $ conscious, then just buy the sizes you use the most.

@danielhurst8863
@danielhurst8863 3 года назад
Looks awesome. Number of great ideas. I've literally been imagining it on my 2004 Discovery and how everything would work. The only potential issue I can see relates to your table. You deliberately don't have the table mounted to the swing rack so it doesn't get dirty (great thinking, I would have mounted it and it would have gotten dirty), but you will have the tire above your surface and the tire can be dusty, dirty or muddy depending on your location, and wind can easily blow that onto your table. The regular swing out doesn't have this because the door is solid and blocks wind, and it's internal to the vehicle so the inside of the window isn't exposed like the tire is exposed. I think the simplest solution is a small cloth that you drape over the back of the tire when you put on your table. Little weight and easily mounted and takes little space when it's not used, and can have pockets for holding cooking utensil, spices, etc.. Depending on how windy your location, you may have to secure the cloth. In Casper Wyoming there are enormous winds and would blow anything unsecured away. Your channel makes me think about issues that have never crossed my mind before, and that's a good thing. Again, thank you for taking the time to explain your tips and tricks. That is what really sets your channel apart. You understand that others may not understand what you are doing, and you have a good style giving information that appeals to both experts and amateurs, and that's hard to pull off. I also like you use the same spray coating that I use on my roof rack.

Whammy! Regarding your rig, regardless of what I think of it (awesome) what I enjoy most is that you have an overland rig that's kind of old school in the sense that the bulk of your rig is custom fabbed. Before all the bolt on accessories were as abundant as they are now all one could do was custom fab something. It's a really cool build that I feel honors the traditions of over landing. Well done. Thanks for the content and inspiration!

My lack of metalwork experience exposed itself watching the final episode. I couldn’t wrap my head around the final (finish weld?) weld and grind portion of the project and what it was going to look like. Then you said you were going to “paint” the bumper and I’m screaming bedliner in my head. I guess I’m just used to “ranch style” bumpers where the “weld” is a visual part of the finished product. I wasn’t prepared for the seamless look and subtle but tough textured paint that appeared in the final product. Beautiful work.

I went lame and installed a SmittyBilt that used a sliding spring loaded pin years back and used a De-Sta-Co Pull-Action Stainless Steel Toggle Clamp from McMaster Carr 5071A57 to hold the tire carrier in place. The carrier rests on a block of delron/Mylar/phenolic material. The latch has a locking mechanism that worked perfect for my app. The De-Sta-Co latch quality is top notch. FYI only.

Made something similar to this, used hydraulic latches instead, seemed to work better when I'm in -0/F weather. Had a problem with most swing and buckle latches freezing after an overnight sub-zero camp or during the summer, them getting so packed with mud and rocks from various tracks it became a "find a big hammer or rock to open scenario. I Tig'ed my whole bumpers, left em with that stack dime look, and clear coated the bumpers and accessory racks. Different strokes for different folks, But absolutely loved your build, Rock on bud, and keep up the great work!

Nate, absolutely excellent work. It looks really good, and the fit and finish is great--love the silver buttonheads on the black armor, your edgework, and the BD lights. Maybe a future project: some sort of drop down canvass flap to keep dust out of the cab so you don't have to break down your camp kitchen every time? Also, possibly some rubber/poly bushings on the pins to keep that aluminum from rubbing on that nice finished swingout (kind if made me cringe to hear the metal on metal). Outstanding work! Can't wait to see a matching front bumper!

Nate, you may feel like this mini-series has dragged on, but damn it's worth it! The attention to detail, the quality of your work, the finishing/paint... the fact that it's taken longer than planned has really shown us that great work takes time and that it's worth that time for results like this. Thanks for all the inspiration man, keep it up 👍🏻
