Hi everyone, I'm Shaman a med student. I'll be answering all your questions in this video regarding med school admissions. Hopefully this clears up the general things medical schools are looking for. Even so, the way the system is structured makes it impossible to find exactly what schools prefer and for the schools to be consistent with all students. Keep in mind that a successful med school application is a balance between the traditional recommendations in this video, personal and unique activities and admissions' committees personal preferences, and a whole lot of luck/factors you can't control!
Here’s my video about scoring in 100 percentile on the MCAT:
• How I Scored in the 10...
Is Getting Into Medical School Harder Than Ever?
• Is Getting Into Medica...

I wasn’t aware this chart even existed. Thank you for showing us! I’m upset that volunteer has more weight than work. I literally need to work to live and I’d love to volunteer (i already volunteer but as my semester continues I’m starting to cut down my volunteer hours and up my work hours for money) but my time is just getting slimmer and slimmer!!

You are right, they do not care about the program, but are intrigued in how diverse one is, on how one can handle things than JUST sciences, they are interested in studenst who are proactive and are critcial thinkers in sciences and in the real life world. :) Hopefully, i make it.

Hey Shaman, this was a great list. Since you didn't mention it, I was wondering what your thoughts were on how summer experiences were looked at. I feel like there is such a wide variety of activities during summer like internships, research, study abroad, etc. that it becomes difficult to prioritize the right one.

I thought it was extremely interesting that degrees from a graduate program or professional school would be considered of low importance, and I’m assuming it depends on the context? I was premed in undergrad and due to personal reasons wasn’t ready to apply for medical school, but have sense gain experiences and started a graduate program geared for students who want to improve and gain entrance into med school. The success rate is amazing. People who didn’t ever get interviews are being interviewed everywhere. Half of my peers got in already, and from what I’ve heard from admissions directors, they do like higher education if it proves you can handle med school. Just thought that chart was interesting based on my experience.

I'm so glad I don't live in USA, you guys seem to have it so hard to get accepted into med school. 4 years of college, High GPA, Mcat, extracurriculars, interviews, etc omg in my country we just give them our high school diploma and we get accepted. 6 years and we are done. Then we take USMLE Step 1 and 2 and then do residency in USA. So we end up in the same place as Americans in the end but they had a way tougher path. It's unfair I think.

I’ve seen the AAMC chart a few times, but I’m always surprised at how low speaking multiple languages is ranked. I’m not multilingual, but I’ve always thought it to be interesting that it’s not ranked higher. Any thoughts on that?
@ericalee926
@ericalee926 6 лет назад
MedHead I would suppose that its because it doesnt tell them anything about what kind of medical student/doctor you’ll be. Its useful and can make you a bit more unique, but I would guess thats why its not ranked higher.

Erica Lee Yeah, very true! That’s a good take on that.
@llawliet2310
@llawliet2310 6 лет назад
@Erica Lee not necessarily. It can also be a reflection of good bedside manner because you are able to develop a trusting relationship with patients who's first languages aren't english and shows how well rounded you are.

@iamstoopid3954

L Lawliet I think it's more of the fact that it's really not feasible to be quantified. Adcoms are shifting through 10000s of applications and are narrowing down interviews to the 100s range. Interviews are the only time when they can actually gauge your knowledge of the language in depth to confirm that you're not bsing, but even to find interviewers with knowledge of screen for people who know the language consumes a lot more resources. Anyone can say they know language X because they know Y number of words from it. I'd say being multilingual has more meaning for matching into competitive residency placements when you'd actually have been trained for bedside manners.

almost all medical schools in the US, if not all of them, require that you are either a US citizen or US resident. If you are not either of these two, you can look into PA school. Most PA schools don't have these requirements!

So since it's hard to differentiate between hard and easy courses, can I take the easier upper div courses and get a high GPA? Do u think the amount of units the students takes per year matters as well? Say someone taking 12 units vs 18 units a quarter
@MS-yr7ve
@MS-yr7ve 6 лет назад
I've wondered about this as well. My first 2 semesters of college (freshman year) I took 18 credits both times and had to bust my butt to achieve the grades that I wanted with little to no free time all while adapting to the fluidity of college, compared to the kids taking 12 credits which is ONE to TWO less classes to juggle.. Hopefully it means something bc the difference that it makes is absolutely unbelievable. IMO it would be looked at as a benefit bc the workload in med school is going to be heavy and you have less opportunity to cater you workload to your liking

eduardo santos It's a misconception among some pre-meds that going to community college looks bad for applications. Rather, it's not that important to med schools if you attended a community college versus a four-year institution when compared to the other parts of the application.

@MedBros 6 лет назад
Many people, including those at Yale, didn't have a pre-med major! Just follow your passions and tie that into medicine (as well as doing the required pre-requisites of course) and you'll be fine! Some studies show that non pre-med majors have a high chance of getting into med school so your odds should be good!

@ppu88_95
@ppu88_95 6 лет назад
Hadeel Abuali i think the schools want diversity. For example if the school already has too much asian students, they would be more likely to not accept more asian students and accept students from other races. All ivy leagues do this and it's very controversial as it's very hard for asians to get accepted into them.

Can someone give me advice? I am currently in college and this will be by 3 yr. I was going for pre med and I wanted to go on to med school and become a cardiac surgeon all my life. I have doubts now because my parents are old and are not financially well at this point and are both sick with many health conditions and I can’t see them struggle no more and want to help them out already but I know this career choice is long but I don’t want anything to happen to them😪

dinor mayo is it possible for you to take a gap year or some gap years after college and before medical school? If so then you can use the gap year to help your parents as much as you and just be there for them physically.
@MedBros
@MedBros 6 лет назад
That is a tough situation and I really hope things get better for you and your parents. That's really admirable that you're considering letting go of your dream to help your parents. Its true that the path to become a doctor is really long but its also true that you'll probably be in a much better position to help your parents financially as a physician. I don't know the specifics of your parents' conditions and financial situation but if things are time-sensitive and you find another path to help your parents sooner, then that also sounds perfectly reasonable. Either way I wish you and your family the best.
