This video is a collaboration between people all over the world, thank you to them for making this happen: www.pssound.co.uk/ www.bladeice.com/ audiostatus.lt/ hepaking.com
Crazy undertaking, and to think this is a small sample of all the different drivers available. I would take notes on your test setup, even a video for yourself, so maybe in the future you can do this test with another batch of drivers and have direct comparisons.
@RAW-CAt Possibly, but it would be a pretty small horn, and I'm guessing it would'nt have a great amount of influence. In any case, for an apples to apples comparison all the drivers will have the same bais, and you'll at least be eliminating a variable if you place the drivers on the front of the baffle. Also, with this method, you could probably group the speakers in two or three groups and most probably only have to make two or three baffles with different holes to suit the size of the cone
I had the dome mid 3.5 inch from Peerless. I was very pleased with them, quite cheap made and cheap to buy, but they do sound nice, measure pretty nice needing just a few bands of eq and the stage is very wide because of the dome design. Now i have the Utopia 3.5WM and i thought you have them in this test 😁. Anyway thanks for making this nice videos for us, i am quite excited for the Joying hu tests.
If you want to do them flush - how about you face mount them in the MDF, then get some polystyrene ceiling tiles and use a craft knife to cut out the driver shape and just use double sided tape to fix it to the MDF baffle.
Watching this while listening to my Fostex desktop speakers, excited to see what you think of those in comparison to everything else as I have another set I might be putting in my car.
Peter at pssound installed the brax ml3 in my mk4 golf gti last November, upgraded to a 3way front from 2way. Really impressed with them ,sound really smooth. My system has come a long way since Peter rescued it after a appalling installation. He's just finished building some stunning midbass door enclosures for me , what a difference this has made to my system.
Cool, perfect that you also do a break in!, please try the faitalpro 4", before and after, because I think that driberwill change about 20 to 30 Hz, before and after :-)
Wow, what a nice collection you have there ! :) But I am interested about some other models, from a few other brands too, like the Blam Live, Signature and Multix line, also Micro Precision 5, 7 and Z line, Helix i3 , i5 and i7 and maybe something from Morell and Accuton would be cool too :D
Make 2 most common outer diameter (1 large and 1 medium) + 3d print adapter rings. Drawing on cad will be faster than routing multiple holes. You can print with 20% infill. If you ever need to stuff rings or holes due to use of adapters, can use playdough or bluetac.
With the odd shapes, you should make a baffle and mount the drivers in-set into the baffle and make a beauty ring to cover and seal. This is what they expect a manufacturer to do
Agreed, also I am curious to see on-axis response as well as off-axis response and hopefully he can maybe simulate off-axis reflecting off glass. Each of these drivers will behave differently in each of these configurations.
21:40 make a square/circle that is removable from the main baffle, then create multiples and flush mount the drivers to one each, or if some have identical flanges you can re-use a square/circle. Lots of work due to the number of drivers, but usually that's how people do it. Another option is to create a baffle faceplate to stick on so that you only have to cut out a shape instead of routing. But then you have much larger multiple pieces. Could make it out of foam core board and cut with knife after tracing driver outer edge.
I'd like to see the Ground Zero GZTM 100NEO included, it's one of the shallowest midranges you can get and it's quite premium for the low price, phase plug and neodymium magnet and all.
If I knew you were doing this I would’ve sent you a pair of Audiofrog mids I have. I also have the Dayton Rs75 in my daily car. I’m really interested to see the results of that. Most everything else in the Dayton Reference series measures well, especially for the price point here in the states.
Please tell us the enclosure you have 'em in and what is the volume? On axis, I'm guessing, but what location? I'm asking because I have a pair that were in fiberglass pods on the dash where it meets A-pillar and I wasn't thrilled, so took 'em out.
@@csj9619 I have them in a 2016 VW Golf in small custom enclosures mounted on the dash. I'm currently running them crossed over from 400hz all the way up. I'm approximately 15 degrees off axis. I'm using them with a Dayton dsp and a Focal AP 4340. I also got them on sale for $20 each a few years ago. Perfect? Not by any means. They do way better than anything in that price range should. I always suggest making scrap enclosures and listening from different angles and locations. You may find a spot that serves them better.
This is going to be a lot of work! It will certainly be interesting, and I appreciate you doing this. Where are you located? I have a feeling it's not in the US, if so, I could possibly make this a little easier for you. My approach would be one large baffle with an opening for a smaller insert, maybe a 6"x6" or 8"x8". The smaller inserts would be cut to mount the different drivers in. I'm thinking 1/2" MDF since it's just midrange drivers, should be adequate. I could cut the inserts for you on the CNC but if we live oceans apart, the shipping might get a little pricey. BTW, if I can help, I would be supplying one more driver for the testing, the SB Acoustics SB12MNRX2-25-04. It's close in size to the two larger ones you already have planned and based on specs, should fair pretty well in this shootout.
Will u test all of them in ib?(or big sealed) Yes i know that ib is the best for low distortion when designing a driver, but i believe that least 2-3 drivers from that table are designed for small sealed pods
can you do something similar with midbass drivers as well? I personally run Steg MSS6's, Micro Precision 5.8's, and Mundorf amtu80's for my front stage, but a close friends of mine, who isn't into SQ builds at all, would be okay with dropping *a little* on a nice sounding system after hearing mine. I have to go almost HYPER budget, as he needs a full system. So with the non-negotiable elements of a DSP and amps eating a lot of the budget right off the bat, I'm trying to find some awesome budget drivers. So far I think I'm locked in on the Faital Pro 4FE32/8's for mids, and SB Acoustics SB29's for tweets. For midbass I've found the Goldwood GW-6-PC-4's, which on paper look like pretty good IB drivers, but the $40 price scares me, and I'm really curious about distortion and real world response. Your effort is so much appreciated! A google doc with prices and your test results would be UNBELIEVEABLY helpful.
I almost thought thoes Styrofoam boxes look like silver flutes? (Then i saw how small these drivers are) silver flutes are amazing for the price. a pair is around 50$ in the 5.25" 60$ for the 6.5".. wool fiber cones.
Price is a little higher these days but yea silverflutes are quite cheap and Do really well. They don't really like tonplay 2way but for a 3way setup they work well
Three of the big hitters are missing from this group. Utopia 3.5wm, DynAudio E430 and believe it or not, the Xcelsus XXM325. I would also throw in the Audible Physics RG100 and Morel MM3 and even the MM2.
A little surprised not seeing some Tang Band or Alpair drivers... they're usually very performing and not much expensive... most can be defined even "cheap" anyway Q/P is always rather high.
Well 95% of the use cases these midranges will be installed in open back A pillars or dash locations. Very rarely someone will use enclosures or pods for them. So I disagree with you.
@@RAW-CAt In car audio, midrange drivers are usually made for 2 things, small 0.3l pods or big sealed where the enclosure wont affect the driver suspension. dor or dash.
These smaller size midranges will be used in 3 way component sets and most would be in a small pod with a tweeter next to it. These should all be tested in a small cup pod. If you were doing 6.5" mids i agree they most likely will end up in doors so the ib setup would be best.
I make my own speakers(boombox) including the subwoofer driver. They sound better and louder than jbl Boombox. Most expensive subwoofer driver ive got is around 12$. I wish i had atleast one of yours. Just wondering how nice it will sound.
Your videos are great . This might help you . Hifi vector audio reviewed a DSP recently.DSP name “marts btx8” from Brazil company only $140 dollars . I hope this helps . Matt
Domes still have their place, they are generally more forgiving to off-axis installations but you'll sacrifice lower freq response and/or overall output.
Probably you noticed that these drivers are not mine and are sent to me by other people. If you want something tested feel free to contact me and send it to me.
I swear that Dayton Audio with the copper phase plug was a H.A.T. until you introduced it and noticed its origin of manufacture, what is the world (of car audio) coming to? don't tell me because the answer is "the end", I already know after seeing that, which I believed was over in 2002 at least in America with the big brands back then.
Apologies for that. Probably you have noticed that I have a very inexperienced production crew and my team is focusing on the content rather than visuals. In all seriousness, I shoot free hand with my phone, I can't allow myself to invest into video equipment. Maybe try just listening with no video?
