Hi everyone! I'm so happy to be back after a nice break 😌 I often get asked what it costs to start making rugs or start a rug business. So, here's an estimate of what I've spent (though, realistically, I've spent even more than this). I hope it helps give you a transparent look at what it might cost you over time!
I'm so happy to be partnering with Tuft the World (tuftinggun.com) for this video. As you probably know, I have used their products since the very beginning of my tufting journey and they have always served as a one stop shop for me, even before this partnership.

I’m a leather craftsman/saddle maker. I use wool shears on sheep skin to level and trim the wool padding on the bottom of a saddle, along with other things I put sheepskin on such as rifle slings and occasionally some chaps. You won’t regret getting the shears, they are FAR superior than hair trimmers and leave a far better and even look. I recommend the Premier 4000s, it’s pricey, around $330, but it will last you decades, if not a lifetime. I’m watching rug making videos because I want to make a really nice rug for my store front, and who knows, offer rug making as a service as well later on if/when I’m any good at making them. Thanks for the tips on getting started on that trade, always looking to expand my horizons.

I had no idea the cost would be so great. It would be such a fun craft to do but the cost would be so high that I think they would be extremely challenging to sell. I was always upset with rug makers who sold there rugs at such high prices but I can see the base material alone would be so expensive you’d never be compensated for all the necessary materials and time to make it lucrative.
@CherishedCustoms
@CherishedCustoms 2 года назад
Not with that attitude!!
@veeanon2238
@veeanon2238 2 года назад
@@CherishedCustoms they have a point though. Most custom rugs are going for $150 for a 3x3 which by standards is expensive for a rug. Finding a audience for that price point would be hard for conversions. It’s not like selling a $30 shirt. Especially during a pandemic where the economy is in saving mode.
@aspen1713
@aspen1713 2 года назад
you can cut costs if you don't mind a more rudimentary / time consuming set up :) You could make your own frame (I've seen a few videos with rug makers just using a few pieces of wood and some nails). I hand draw all of my designs onto the cloth, you don't need to spend money on a projector unless you're really planning on making rug tufting your business/on a larger scale. You also don't need a tufting gun, you can buy a cheap needle and do it all by hand (which is what I do. More time consuming and a bit painful on the hand/wrist, but much cheaper.). If you end up selling rugs, you can always use the profit to invest in higher grade / quicker tools. :)

@@aspen1713 how about the cost of yarn? How’s that? Say for a …. 5x7 rug? Do you know?
@flipletape9706
@flipletape9706 2 года назад
It's really not that expensive if you do it as a hobby. She's really going for top of the line stuff. I got the cheap stuff for a fraction of the price and they look amazing. Wanted them for outside in tents, so didn't want anything I would care damaging. Art is very much like that, you can do something for 15 bucks that could also cost you 500 if you really went all the way with it. I get my yarn from thrift shops and use carpet adessive glue. I don't even put fabric on the bottom lol Edit: I did already have a projector for murals though, so that did cut the price a lot.

Ah! You answered my question about whether I can use 14 count Aida cloth for tufting or not. I have some that was in my grandmother’s cross stitch stuff, but it’s probably too tightly woven. I think there may actually be some tufting cloth in my other grandmother’s fabric stash that I inherited, and I didn’t know what it was for when I went through all of her fabric. Thanks for sharing your time and knowledge with everyone!
@allencomeau
@allencomeau 3 года назад
China Kris Yang, $150 or less. Aneke industries. Primary backing fabric from Fiberlane in PA. You have to buy in bulk like 10 meters at a time but the cost is about $5 per yard square for what everyone is selling for $20 or so. They have a cut fee as well.

Hey AJ thank You SO much for doing these videos. I'm a tufting-neophyte, and I really Love having You as my Mentor. But i do know something about toxic products and how it can affect your lungs. The fact that you are able to smell the product, isn't necessary an indicator, that it's a highly toxic product. the most toxic products don't always have a scent to 'em. The thing that's need-to-know here, is security codes. every chemical has them, and its crucial to know how to read them (If you wanna stay safe). if its toxic for your lungs, a simple facemask wont help, you'll need a closed-system face protection instead (yeah , i have no idea what its called :) ) Security codes will alarm you if you need a heavy breathing system. If you know how to read them Stay safe and wonderful NV

I have bought a tufting gun from Amazon before and I totally agree with everything you’re saying! When I used it for the first time, not only did a screw come loose and I had no idea where it belonged to, but it short fused on me and practically exploded in my face! I tried to return the product but because it was from a third party seller, but they refused to give me a refund even though I mailed it back to them. I had to talk with amazon’s customer service several times to argue about giving me back my money and in the end they did. In the end it’s definitely not worth it to buy from Amazon!!

Hi AJ, stumbled upon your video while researching for a business I plan to start as well. This broke it down and made it super easy to understand. Will be using your tuft the world link when I’m ready to place my order. Also, did you ever find any other VOC glue replacement options? Ty again and happy tufting! 🤍

That is basically the best you can get, but you might be able to find other types on eBay or Alibaba or something like that

I would love to see if anyone has tried using a cheap/free tarp from Harbour Freight.

Certainly not by hand! It hardens pretty solid.

Try pet grooming clippers, I’d think a 40 blade (poodle feet) possibly a 10 or 15 blade (poodle face). Andies brand would probably work well. They’ll last much longer than people clippers and you can have the blades sharpened. You can find them online at pet supply links.

Wool shears will be much heavier and bulkier than pet grooming shears. Just a FYI from a pet groomer.

I'm trying to make a purchase from Tuft the world on your recomendation, however, I clicked on the wrong machine (the loop). I went back before I purchased it and selected cut pile. However, there is no way that I can find to remove the loop pile from my order form. There is a way to do it if you are a guest and not logged in, so i've spent the last hour trying to find a number or a way to contact them, but there is NOTHING other than an email that said they will get back to me in 1 to 2 days... That doesn't seem like a good way to do business. I want to make a purchase from them and I can't cause I have to wait 2 days before they will get back to me. Do you have a way to contact them so I can ask a simple question and not have to wait 2 freaking days??!!
