(GV very, very paraphrased) "The cone can't get any lighter... unless you use a bit of paper." Challenge accepted. Since I watched this vid the other day, I've been making pour-over/steep hybrid coffees by a method inspired by this video and your commentary (though I imagine I'm not the first). I take a #2 cone filter and bend over the edge about a cm. Place that around the rim of the mug and add ground coffee. First time I used two paper clips to secure the filter, but this turns out to be unnecessary; the tension of the folded over rim is enough. Add ground coffee and pour water. Initially it pours through pretty quickly, but then slows down. Keep pouring until the grounds float and place lid on top to retain heat. Steeping 45 sec has been good for me. Lift filter, let drain and discard. Lid on and enjoy hot coffee. These have been so good, I just don't think I could tell the difference blind between this and my regular pour-over. This is either a sad commentary on my pour-over skills or a testament to the genius of the pour-over/steep method. ;-) I assume that the too-quick pour-over time (under-extraction) is compensated by the supplemental steeping time (adjusted to avoid over-extraction). For the record, the first one of these I made was with a hardy paper coffee cup from a restaurant. Paper cup + 1 paper filter = 30g. ;-) Actually, it started out with hot chocolate and my son wanted to keep it. Not sure what toxins I'm ingesting as the cup breaks down, but it was on its 6th or 7th use and still in great shape. For the rest of the coffees, I use a double-walled ceramic mug made to look like a paper coffee cup, to include silicone lid. A benefit to this method over any metal cone is that the filter bottom is insulated inside the mug; the metal cone exposed to air is always cooling down faster. It's the easiest way for me to make coffee out on my property, on the deck or at the firepit and I thank GV for the inspiration. The family and I are going to hike part of the Appalachian Trail this summer and I see no reason for this not to be my preferred way to make coffee. I probably don't have any qualms about rinsing and reusing the filter a few times, too. I have the Nanopresso, but I only use it in the house (my espresso machine that takes up zero counter space). This makes coffee on the trail uncomplicated and a reality for me (other than when I just bring a vacuum bottle of coffee). Thanks GV! Might try this overnight for a cold brew coffee in the morning....

I'm 100% going to try the folded over paper method with the steep/pour over hybrid idea, if I can dial it in and make it work, it will be perfect for lightweight hiking!! I take a little bit of the foil coated bubble wrap and make a little cup cosy, to keep the heat in cold weather, and with the lid on too, it will be piping hot. Also, I have an elastic wrist band around the lip of my titanium mug, so I could use that to secure the paper :) Thanks for the awesome idea!!

Funny ending to your video and a nice overview of the four types. As I enjoy french pressed coffee and at times expresso. Most of the time when camping as I'm out and about for other things, many are not fans of I enjoy simple old Cowboy coffee made over the campfire. Now we let the coffee grounds float around in the pot for three mins as this seems to bring out richer flavors. Then add cold water on top which drives all the grounds to the bottom of the pot, making the coffee ready to serve without grounds. Thanks truly enjoyed your OUTDOOR MAKING. I'm not a pumper as that method is just hard on my old hands. Good show.

Thanks, glad you liked it, I've been toying with the cowboy method too, I've done a few coffee cupping sessions, and it's basically the same method, they just scoop the bits off the top with a spoon

@@GadgetViper Now this is me, but when making the cowboy coffee after bringing the water to a boil I add a pinch of salt which I think removes the bitterness of taste. Let it boil for three mins with coffee grounds and add splashes of cold water on top and serve. YES once in a while I may get a few grounds, But pouring slowly seems to move the floating grounds back into the pot. I've subscribed to your channel as I like your grinder. @DNGR369

Paper filters always result in a 'cleaner' cup but titanium imparts no flavours as would stainless steel brewers. I'd experiment putting a paper filter outside the cone between the supporting brace and see. For transport this is the ultimate otherwise just bring a plastic V60 and papers.

Hi, The double wall titanium cup is an absolute pleasure to use, the filter isn't quite as consistent as using a V60 with paper. The flow can sometimes slow a little and need the odd tap to keep it on target time wise. It does make a great coffee, as long as you have a good method of pouring the water without disturbing the bed too much. I grabbed a titanium goose neck kettle to take out with me, that's made a big difference :)

ESPRO make one! It's the lightest and weighs about the same as this brewer. It's a work of art and the handle is sick. Haven't got one yet but almost need it (have larger version currently). ESPRO are the only company with the correct filter technology for French press (patented) so a Keith version would be inferior for this fact alone.

I agree. I think it is a great product, but let's be real, you are paying $200 USD for a metal cone that is made and sold from China. I realize that it is titanium, but it is ultra thin. The manufacturing that requires the perforated holes should be cheap considering the origin.
@denzel0003
@denzel0003 5 лет назад
derivativedeli I believe that on the contrary, it being thin titanium it would need specialized equipment to machine. In addition to form such high density conical holes adds on to the precision needed to machine it. Also consider that they managed to give a cup, a stand and a pour over coffee filter under 150g. However alltogether I would agree that for a pour over coffee maker it is on the high end. I think he should do a comparison between all the coffee products he has reviewed. Personally I would get the Nowpresso in that price point because it is more convenient. But I understand the appeal of ultralightweight equipment, especially for people who go hiking etc.
@d8J47QpR
@d8J47QpR 5 лет назад
You can get made in Japan titanium cookware for much cheaper, and other metal coffee pourover filters from Amazon for a fraction of the price. It's just a high-end scam similar to how companies arbitrarily price luxury products. In regards to the other products reviewed, I have the Nanopresso, and it is a gem although I only use it at home
@denzel0003
