Some customers are so pushy to get their phone back, they don't consider that the longer you work on their phone, the higher quality the repair, and better value for money. Instead they'd rather rush you which means more chance of you failing. I had a customer who was calling every 15mins, and after the 3rd time I just reassembled the phone and returned it to her saying I was unable to fix it.

The reason you use the tray is because with out it the object your cleaning is laying against the "hull" or whatever u want to call it the tub or hull that holds the liquid has the transducers mounted directly too it they excite the liquid to the point of cavitation. So if there is something directly touching it that close to the emitter of the transducer it causes alot of reverberation and stresses the transducer much more effectively shorting the life of it by about half or more. bottom line u need a certain amount of space from tub. =) loved the video man I'm going to check out what else u got.

The reason you don't want the board touching the bottom is because it will dampen the effect. It the same effect as if you put your finger on a speaker cone.

Why a tray ? The bottom is like a speaker membrane, with impedance matching. A board at the bottom will limit its proper movement, generate harmonics, increase wear, etc.

Hey Louis, long time fan and customer. Vids are hilarious and fun to watch. Just my experience, I bought the crest/Branson u suggested. I found working at 70 degrees, 150-170ml of Branson is better. As u said, do not skull fuck the board, no more than 10 mins total. Also, to those about to drop $1k on this machine, it cleans the mobo long term, u can get the same effect with toothbrush/alchool but maybe miss spots, that will resurface later. Long story short, this ultrasonic cleaner, will not fix a dead mobo. if it can be repaired by cleaning, this is the way to go

Cool demo about cavitation is to hold some aluminum foil in the bath for 10-20 seconds, remove and show all the micro pin holes that were blown thru the foil. In that light, I was trying to clean clogged print heads and because of the fine structure of them, I believe the above phenom was killing them. Then I read that they could be clean with around 90kHz ultrasonic frequency. You mentioned a cleaner that sweeps the frequency and never got back to that. Would like to know more about that and it would be nice if there was user control of frequency and maybe even programmable.
@johnfranks
@johnfranks 9 лет назад
You can bag the board in a ziploc with alcohol (or whatever cleaner), squeeze out the remaining air, then drop it into the tank. Cavitation still occurs, you eliminate the hazard of fire or explosion using volatiles in a US cleaner, no chance of cleaner or water residue if you aren't use a water based solvent, requires less solvent.

as a side note to keep anyone from blowing something up, don't use anything flammable or with a flashpoint. the digital version of this cleaner is nice too. it's about $50 more. very easy to get exact settings and it also adds a degas mode. and if you want to fill it, branson recommends a 3% solution. I fill it with 1.5 gallons of distilled water and put 170 ml of EC in.

Louis, Thank you for existing! I have been doing this same kind of work for about the same time as you say you have, but only recently went through all the goddamn red tape to open up a shop. Long story short, ive been working out of my house and because of my new venture cash has become a bit scarce. I came across this post while researching a DIY Ultrasonic cleaner due to the shortness of funds at the moment and because of this post am abandoning that idea completely. I thank you for existing because youve decided to just say what we've all been wanting to say for years. i know exactly how you feel. Some of the customers that have brought me their laptops or other random electronics to fix are complete and absolute morons with the unreasonably short turnaround expectations or the fact that they as you say "Skull Fuck" their shit and have unreasonable or simply unrealistic expectations. So thank you for the information and thank you for just saying to the plebes that they need to stop fucking up their shit if they expect people like us to care.

Ultrasonic cleaners use ultrasonic frequencies at very loud levels that you can't hear and produce undertone frequencies. If you are sitting right next to it, please check it with a decibel meter to make sure it isn't so loud it is going to damage your hearing without hearing protection. Although some of the main frequencies used by ultrasonic cleaners may not be damaging, some sympathetic frequencies can be.

As always great video and very informative, there was one thing I didn't agree with you about, the part where you put the board into 99% alchohol - why would you want to get rid of the distilled water? Since distilled water is purified and does not contain any impurities, it is unable to conduct electricity? is it because of the Branson EC?

Louis, why do you flip the board over in to 4 different orientations? If there is only one ultrasonic transducer inside the machine, you'll only need to put it in to two different orientations. If there are two, you don't need to change the orientation at all.

if EVERYTHING else fails, including the crest. and you cannot for some reason remove the chip. you can soak the chip in acetone and put coating in the acetone, it will get under the chip and help isolate shorts made from waterdamage. It's a bodge but if you do not have any other choice..

Obviously, if I'm cleaning multiple boards in succession I wouldn't always have to change out the fluid for each one, so the next logical question is: Should I transfer the used fluid into a container to reuse if it isn't heavily used? Can I leave it in the machine? I plan to use it on other types of boards, so what type of components should not be immersed? Are through-hole electrolytic capacitors safe? I'm worried that cavitation can rupture the venting slits or exchange solution with electrolyte even without an obvious rupture.

Then I get the super know it all fucking engineer (I'm an engineer, so no disrespect to the ones that have a little common sense) which will explain to me how something fucking works. I'll explain to them that sometimes in practice it doesn't always work like that and they look at me like I have 2 dicks! WTF? Anyway, keep up the good work! Love the videos.

I guess you can use that small one on SSD's too huh? Since they are essentially Electronic boards but then again, when they break. They are usually hard to fix.

Is it safe to dunk a motherboard that has non-surface-mount caps, or will the water seep into those things? I'm getting occasional PCI winkouts on an HP server and I'd like to clean it. One end at a time, cuz I can't get the whole thing into the ultrasonic machine.

Holly shit, I just realized I own one without knowing it. last year I helped my dentist clean out his practice because he was retiring. I saved anything that looked like it would have value. After watching this video, a light bulb came on in my head. Yep I own a L&R TRANSISTOR / ULTRASONIC T14, wire basket included. I am assuming this is the same thing, however it might be half the size.

I am a new sub and like your video on ultrasonic cleaners. I sell ultrasonic cleaners to dental offices. The one you have is a very good machine with a "sweep" as you mentioned. You absolutely need the basket like you stated otherwise eventually the cavitation will cause holes in the bottom of the ultrasonic cleaner from the board or whatever you put in the machine, vibrating on the bottom of the ultrasonic. Anyways I've been enjoying your videos. Your ultrasonic cleaner is more than likely made by a company called L & R. They manufacture pretty much all of them and other companies put their name on them.

When you flip the mother board. Do you wear gloves or use a tool to flip the board? Also With the use distilled water and chemical what do you do with that? Have you ever put a iMac Mother board in the ultrasonic? (Just curious if it would fit)

The shops I worked at were too cheap to buy good stuff like this. We mostly used acetone on the board and part to clean off all the flux and it seemed to work quite well. Make sure not to put it on ordinary plastic or it will melt the plastic. Most boards use nylon or some type of plastic not easily damaged by acetone. NOTE: I was working mainly on consumer and professional electronics. Audio, video and VCR, television, etc. Not motherboards but many of these devices I mention do have digital boards just like this. What do you guys think, is acetone and a toothbrush ok for making spot cleans on a board?

***** I can't find this Branson EC in my country but had quotations from 3M for products cleaning : - Flux - Particle and fingerprint Is there a point buying this when I understand it is necessary to remove moisture after a liquide damage? These products are expensive as you know so... Thanks!

I just want to know if you suggest the 45khz or the 132khz version? This is available in both versions. I'm assuming it's the higher freq model to be safer. I just want to make sure before I buy one. Thanks so much if you reply.

Louis Rossmann I am a fan of both you and Jessica over at Ipad rehab. I just purchased the Crest 250HT with the basket as you strongly suggested ;) since I'll be doing phone only water damge repair. My question is since I'll be using half the distilled water would i use half the Branson Cleaner you suggest? My guess is yes but just wanted gto make sure.

I would guess that without the tray you get all sorts of wave reflection issues on the bottom / close to the walls. After all you won't sit right in the corner of a concrete wall to enjoy high fidelity sound either, but sit more centered.

Sorry if you covered this and I just missed it but a couple quick questions. Can you reuse the branson and dis. water. Can you leave it in the ultrasonic cleaner or do you remove it and store it for reuse or does it have to be disposed of. I seen the way you reuse the alchol which is a great idea. simple, cheap and keep it from evaporating. Thanks

Thanks Louis! You've convinced me to buy one of these! One question -- do you bother with an ultrasonic cleaning on working boards that have no backlight, or do you bypass the cleaning and go straight to replacing the fuse? Thanks again!
@rossmanngroup
@rossmanngroup 10 лет назад
There is no point in replacing a fuse without using the multimeter. Is the fuse blown? Is there a short to ground in the backlight output causing the fuse to blow? If the fuse works, but there is no backlight, replacing it blindly is just silliness. If the fuse is blown and the short to ground on backlight output still exists, replacing the fuse is again, silliness. There is no shortcut to measuring, analyzing, and using the tool I talked about in my most recent video.

+Louis Rossmann i have a small ultrasonic cleaner 0.8L. i dont have BRANSON EC fluid in my country, so my Q is can i use 9:1 IPA 99.9% and acetone (9ml IPA and 1ml acetone)? or u have better mixture for PCB?
@jaymemaurice
@jaymemaurice 7 лет назад
buy branson ec or other electronics cleaning fluid. DO NOT USE IPA IN AN ULTRASONIC - IT CAN EXPLODE VIOLENTLY
@saulns7159
@saulns7159 7 лет назад
batel mizrahi 99.9% IPA? Why not go for a full 100% IPA, they're delicious. I just had two, try a DIPA too. I guess that would make them 200% ipa.

I don't expect technicians to know anything about engineering or science. Technicians are "technicians" because they don't care about how stuff actually works. As long as they have a "kinda-sorta" knowledge then that is good enough. If they really cared how it worked or how to design the stuff they fix then they would go to engineering school. I don't really care if you know exactly how the ultrasonic cleaner works. I'm glad you make your recommendation and highlight the stupid shit other people do. It's interesting to know what kind of dumb shit others are doing.

Is an ultrasonic cleaner with a 6L tank really large enough for laptop repair? MacBooks often have "long and slim" motherboards that fit well (at an angle) but some other manufacturers (MSI, Acer etc) have bigger boards sometimes. Would it be safer to go for a 10L or would the large size go at a loss of cleaning power?
