I just went back and listened to Ultravox whole catalog. Their early stuff, especially with Midge Ure was phenomenal. Saw Midge Ure in concert about 6 years ago. Outstanding band
'Ultravox' Mark 2, originally they had John Foxx as lead singer with tracks such as "Slow Motion", "Quiet Men", "Hiroshima Mon Amour", "Systems of Romance", and the version here with Midge Ure as lead singer, "The Thin Wall", "All Stood Still", "The Voice", "Sleepwalk", "Passing Strangers", "Passionate Reply", "We Stand Alone", "The Ascent", "Astradyne", "Stranger Within", "Mr X/Herr X".
Love Ultravox…my fave tracks…Thin Wall, Western Promise, the voice, passing strangers, white China…..and John Foxx is worth a look too…Systems of Romance
The Voice is another good song of theirs. Midge was also in a band called Visage, which had a few great tracks, you may recall Fade to Grey? That was smoking hot.
Fantastic single . , love both incarnations of the band . John foxx era and midge ure era . Try sleepwalk next , from 1980 from them. Cheers , happy new year.
Oliver Tobias -Probably the smoothest Devil ever! Great video. Ultravox are my forever favourite band and this is probably my favourite song of theirs. Superb. Thanks!
Their only hit in Australia was ''Vienna'', but we were familiar with their other singles like ''The Thin Wall'' and ''Passing Strangers'', which give me tinges of nostalgia. Part of the appeal of "Vienna'' was the music video that was directed by Australian director Russell Mulcahy, who had previously worked on Australian TV for a music program called 'Sounds', as the in-house music-video creator. He'd do videos for Dragon, AC/DC, The Saints, etc; before taking off in the UK. Cheers, Hayley
Bizarrely Hayley , before replacing John Foxx in Ultravox Midge Ure had a go at Punk of all things with his band Rich Kids with the original bass player from the Sex Pistols Glen Matlock , if your aware of that already just roll your eyes n forgive me 😅.. but I do recommend Rich Kids by Rich Kids .. bit of a banger imho 👍🏴
Brilliant song and video. As you realised, it worked on many levels. Their first three albums (with Midge) are classics but their second album 'Rage in Eden' is a masterpiece. I recommend Reap the Wild Wind or Love's Great Adventure or 'The Thin Wall'.
Thank you for this reaction. My personal music collection started with three cassette tapes in 1984 - Spandau Ballet 'Parade', Nik Kershaw 'The Riddle' and Ultravox 'Collection'. As a keen audiophile entering his 40th year of accumulating music, it was truly wonderful to be taken back to where it all (sort of) began.
Great Tune By Ultravox ! Still sounds Ace , While you are trying out this top Scottish Band C and C , would be grand to try out some more Music from that Fine Country ! " Skids " Working for the Yankee Dollar ; Into the Valley ; " Big Country " Where the Rose is Sown : Save Me : Look Away : Fields of Fire : "Runrig " Dance Called America : Skye ; Days of Olden Glory : Loch Lomond : Cheers !
I liked Ultravox. They had a great sound. Not all business people want contracts written in blood. By the same token, i know that the music industry is the devil incarnate.
I noticed in another comment here the song “Hiroshima Mon Amour” mentioned. The band Alcatrazz has an awesome version of that song on their Live Sentence (No Parole From Rock ‘n’ Roll) album. It features a young guitar virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen. It’s amazing! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kvtjfHMBZI8.htmlsi=9Rf9s6C6iznvyVIm
Aye QUITE RIGHT Cynthia .. get intae them !! The horrible folk who listen but can’t be bothered tae help by liking , commenting and subscribing ! .. listening ain’t paying the electricity or equipment bills for these folks guys .. sort it out please ! 👍🏴
I prefer the earlier days of Ultravox with John Foxx on vocals. My favourite Midge Ure era track is Dancing With Tears In My Eyes & the Rage In Eden record is pretty good ..Produced by Conny Plank.
I totally understand and respect both of your rights to be mental by preferring the earlier version with the tone deaf Mr Foxx fronting the band … 🤦♂️ 😆😝😉 👍🏴
Thanks and Happy New Year to you both. Another suggestion for a reaction. "Butterfly on a Wheel" by The Mission (also know as The Mission UK in the states).
As a child of punk I always found, and still do find, the 1980s a bit bland. Especially the electro pop stuff like this. There was tonnes of great music in the 80s, but most was more underground stuff. I am going to ask you again to give Trouble on Oxford Street by Skinny Lister a listen. Great feel good music from more recent times, and a brilliant video to go with it.
@@jabbathehut656really ?.. did he HATE punk ?… really ?… I think Rich kids by Rich kids featuring Glen Matlock from the pistols kinda pours a pile of poop on your random assertion Jabba .. 😅 👍🏴
I’ve read some of the comments before I pressed play and as some have pointed out there’s 2 definite and different versions of Ultravox. There’s the original one with the vastly overrated John Foxx and the 2nd one is the hugely successful version fronted by Midge Ure . The purists will murmur and roll their eyes at the “ sell out” version with Midge and hanker after an earlier more austere , stripped back , less melodic , less successful , less sung in tune and ultimately, less commercially successful. John Foxx walked away from the band to go solo only to find out his Spartan dirges actually didn’t sell and he went down the toilet kinda rapid tbh - underpass ( which I bought btw ) was his most well known solo track before it became obvious he was a talentless nob ! .. I actually hate him .. 👀 And then there was the version with Midge Ure who actually COULD sing and COULD write a melody and COULD make a damn good living out of it . Did I mention how much I hated John Foxx ?., 😅.. I DID ? .. ok was just checking 😆 This is a great track , love it !!! … pssst ( I STILL hate John Foxx ) 👍🏴
Underpass was more usually called Underpants, at least in my neck of the woods. Purists will always appreciate the degree of integrity associated with ignominious failure, but Midge Ure doesn't have to justify his credentials to anyone.
I remember midge ure in a band called slick in the 70s , then came the rich kids, he even had a spell in thin Lizzy , up against guitar players like , Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham, Iv often wondered why? , but personally I think his biggest blame is for that song " Vienna". What a doour , driech , horrible noise 🏴✌️
He only joined Thin Lizzy as a favour to Phil, and he had to learn the entire set list whilst he was making his way over to America. I saw him on his acoustic solo tour in England after Ultravox broke up, and lately he has been playing the full Ultravox back catalogue on tour, including " Vienna. "
@@johncarr2806 I never knew he was noted as a guitar player, would you say he's comparable with Brian Robertson or zal cleminson ,i like him as a person from what I've seen and heard of him, he doesn't embarrass me because he's Scottish, I,LL save that for " Sydney" 🏴✌️
