My restored/reconstructed full English intro to the classic 80's cartoon, Ulysses 31. Enjoy! I do not own this series and will be happy to remove content if asked.
I can still remember back in the 80's watching this as a young child and don't know what the fuck is going on. Because all of the cartoons back in the day had fucking deep intros. And i mean DEEP stories! Man!
dude in one robotech cartoon from back then theres legit a line like "As each combatant takes a moment alone to reflect on the futility of the conflict... THIS IS FOR TEN YEAR OLDS!!!! xD
@@jesterssketchbook and Jacqui Penar - damn straight. I am glad I grew up in the 80s with these cartoons. Just read the comments on RU-vid on any topic and 90% of the posts by presumably teenagers and young adults - it is just "bruh" and "everyone is gangsta until...". From the heady heights of Homer's Iliad and The Odyssey to "bruh", at this rate, the next generation of teenagers will incapable of any thought at all and only be able to grunt to communicate....
Glad to see so many other peeps still remember Ulysses fondly. Makes me miss my childhood so much that I struggle to watch it these days. Happier times. The whole soundtrack is off the scale.
The pacing of this intro really gets me. You've got the big flashy opening bit, you've got the gods angrily proclaiming their punishment to Ulysses, setting the stakes of the series, and then you've got him reuniting with his son, letting us know that as much as the gods bluster and boast, he'd do it all over again. It's just so much emotion jam packed into less than a minute.
@@jayden6538 I think it was obvious that I was referring specifically to the narrated portion of the intro, which is a fraction the length of the video itself.
The good old times in the 90s when you woke up at 6am to watch cartoons! I think I would be to old for it now, but I miss those easy childhood times. Greatings from Germany.
One of my absolute favourite cartoons!! Being an 80’s kid was the best!! I have my own kids now and at times actually think they’re missing out on the joy of turning on the TV so excited about the next episode of your favourite show rather than the option of just streaming meaningless info for hours!!
I think we have too much choice now. I grew up with 3 then 4 channels. BBC1 and ITV had a good variety of kids shows on in the afternoon then Saturday mornings.
That’ll be Willy Wonka’s lemonade, mixed with some hard spirits. Once they’ve regained consciousness, they just need to burp (like in the original movie) and they’ll start coming down.
Great series. Im 51 now and just re-watched the full series on dvd. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as i did back in the 80's. but yeah, its totally awesome. The music in it is really atmospheric and moody, which really adds a lot to it.
Still here. Man I miss the creativity of 80s style intros. btw The Lionel Leroy theme song and others are available on iTunes so best to get it before it disappears.
I’m 67 years young and I remember my kids watching this I used to sing along to the intro absolutely love that song 🎶 😊😊❤xx superhero Ulysses saved the day every time
I heard this theme song ONCE when i was a small boy at a cousin's house. They were rich and had cable. I don't even remember the cartoon or any images from that single episode, but the melody of the song stuck with me for over 25 years! It repeatedly popped in my head every now and then for all these years. Hearing it again now after watching this video has been the Strangest feeling ever! WOW!
OMG!!! I loved this show. And I can't believe that even though I'd not heard this tune for 30 odd years, I was still singing along to all the words. Fricken epic!!!!!

Barry Gibb was a sex god in those days. I am sure most people thought of him when watching this great series. Of course Bjorn Borg also sprung to mind when I watched this as a child.
this show was a childhood favorite. i had a VHS tape of the first 5 episodes for a few years, but it eventualy succumbed to the ravages of time (and repeat viewings) thank you for making this show available again.
I grew up as African kid in Spain watching both Dogtanian and Ulysses 31. Its because of both of them that I am now an ardent fan of classical literature in my mid 40s
I loved this show when I was a teenager growing up in the '80s that when they replayed it on television in my country that I recorded every episode on VHS cassette and I still have it till this day and it is still in a condition that I recorded it in.
Before i got the Region 2 UK DVD's of Ulysses 31, i had a dozen or so torrents of the show. And i remember only episode 2 had the Giant Cyclops at the very beginning. So sweet to see it now in near 720p picture quality. Thanks for this clip man, its absolutely incredible.
THE greatest cartoon of the 1980s. So intelligently written....loved it as a kid. Still do...and I know the intro dialogue and lyrics even at the age of 41 off by heart...
Jean Chalopin might not be well known, but the cartoons he produced defined lots of great memories for kids in the 80's. He's a bit of a legend imo; Ulysses 31, Jayce and the wheeled warriors, Inspector Gadget, Mysterious cities of gold, Pole Position etc etc

I am serious, I have been searching for years trying to remember the "cartoon about the gold" but struggled to find the right set of words for google..... Mysterious Cities of gold... the tune and the gold bird... ahhh such awesome memories. thank you.
I'm German and I absolutely love this really well-made dark French-Japanese coproduction anime series! Unfortunately, it has never had an official DVD release here in Germany so far, despite its cult following.
jacked up on Ribena and Penguin bars ... in my Batman/Star Wars/A-Team pyjamas... cap guns loaded in both plastic side holsters, sheriff badge, cowboy hat, surrounded by my Lego, He-Man and Transformers, on the rug... three feet from the TV... ULYSSES 31, Bravestarr, M.A.S.K, Dungeons & Dragons, Inspector Gadget, Mysterious Cities of Gold... I was so spoiled and I didn't even realise it
Absolute classic intro’s and cartoon’s in the 80’s i could not wait for the next episode week after week. Now i listen to my son’s complain they cant find anything to watch and they literally have a world of tv at their finger tip’s. Where did we go wrong 🤷🏼♂️
hugely popular. all french kids of the 80s knew it. (and "goldorak" aka Grendizer) that opening is still my favorite of all times (the french zeus voice is so imposing)
I first learned of "Ulysee 31" in '86 from what would eventually become Univision-they ran a Spanish dub of the original French program-made by DIC. Within two years, the Fox Broadcasting Company aired DIC's English version.
I remember finding the Spanish version of the show on one of those channels in a video tape a pal of mine sent me (where it was called 'Ulises Trenta Uno"), they apparently dubbed this theme song in many languages.
@@sharp78htdc61 i certainly remember watching it when i was about 8, i was quite surprised to learn it was made much earlier than that, must have been repeated then, or i'm mixing it up with a different show of that time.
i used to watch this every night with my sister and father when i was 6. we memorized the whole song and never got bored. when i listen to this memories kicked in. im 13 now, time flies

im 20 now but my dad brought me up on this show, i used to begg to watch it, im glad i got to enjoy it as a kid this show is seriously something special
So i was born in Paris and left for Australia in 1985, and i LOVED this cartoon, and lucky for me the ABC had all the BEST Japan-French anime like Astroboy, lost cities of Gold and of course Ulysses 31. You've done an amazing job with this and I'm so glad i can show my girls!!!
I mean combining light and a sword is combining two existing concepts already, and swordguns were a thing in our world. It just seems logical to mix sword and blaster.
Wow, this just took me right back to Sunday mornings at my Grandparents house in the mid 80s, and Kideo TV - Ulysses 31, Lady Lovely Locks, Popples, and The Get Along Gang! Such innocent times! 😊
OMG! i cant stop laughing.. this tune, brings back such memories for me.. :O this and mysterious cities of gold were my fav 2 cartoons as a kid growing up.
fething hell, indeed so, along with Mask, Starfleet, Galaxy Rangers, Jayce & The Wheeled Warriors, Pole Positions etc. ..am 40 in a week and a half and I had forgotten the actual full name of Cities of Gold, thanks for joggling my memory banks :) ;P
Oddly today the intro popped into my head for the first time in 40 years -- so popped over to RU-vid to hear it. WOW --- Great intro, great cartoon. To be preteen again !
Look how beautiful and fluid the animation is and the detailed backgrounds. And now look at the PC desktop / flash animation style kack playing on what passes for Children's TV Today. I was blessed during my childhood.
I just remembered this cartoon for some reason only a few moments ago. It's been a while lol. We had some great animated series back then. Battle of The Planets (aka Gatchaman) was another favorite of mine.
