Carminho and these three musicians are amazing. At the beginning of the video pay attention to the beauty of the classic guitar solo and dialogue with bass guitar, then to the amazing portuguese guitar show by Luís Guerreiro and at the end of music to the amazing and high difficulty performance of the bass guitar player. The bass guitar player is famous and since my childhood I remember to see him playing in several tv music shows performing with several bands and orchestras. I would dare to say that he is a prodigy of Nature. IMO no doubt the best fado performance of ever. Thank you for sharing it.

Carminho is a fado singer and is perfectly capable of singing traditional fado... this is just fado giving a step forward as all music does...

In the begining there were mostly 3 ways to sing Fado: À Capela- slow and melancolic (with the 2 guitars, one Portuguese and the other Flamenco); Corrido-speedy like a car chase ( again with 2 guitars); and the Coimbra Fado ( with more guitars). Now there are the new Fado singers and new ways of singing the song with, percussion, orchestra,etc

One life in another life. And yes, the portuguese nh is identical to the spanish ñ. The guitars are as important in fado as the voice, this one is perfect to show that Carminho sits and lets the guitar players shine. I don't see it as a woman yelling at a man. This specific kind of Lisbon fado is like that, "fast and furious"😛. If you listen to a man it's the same speed and tone.

Fado like many other genres of music is not a static thing. each singer gives it their own personal bit of soul, character, style. There are several styles depending on the area, social status, era. There's the very traditional fado that was sang in the old Lisbon quarters back in the late 1800, sang by prostitutes, sailors and that is where it was really born. It sings the hurts of extreme poverty, betrayed love ,loss, the longing for the sea or the death of a loved one caused by the sea. It's what is called the traditional Fado, but even here there are many diferences, you can find Fado Vadio that was sang by just about anyone who could sing or play a Portuguese Guitar, spontaneously at a tavern or balcony or even on the streets, then as years went by people started making a living of it and some taverns became specialized places introducing new singers or established singers in specific nights and this started in the early 20 century and this is the tradicional Lisbon Fado. A natural evolution happened, specially in the 60's when Amália Rodrigues started singing famous poets , many of the poets who spoke against the fascist regime, since she was so very famous the regime could not touch her so it was her way of also singing to the millions of portuguese, ( here and specially those who had run away to other countries) who adored her the words of pain and rebellion, freedom and hope that many could not read because the regime did not want for educated people with access to anything other than their little , plain lives. They are some of the most beautiful fados in our history. ( if you look for Amália Rodrigues in 40's and then on the 60's you will understand the differences between the styles because she had a long carrier in movies and covered the evolution of it and since you asked I can give you some examples, FADO MALHOA,1945, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZNCfktEU5L8.html&ab_channel=PauloBorges ,NÃO SEI PORQUE TE FOSTE EMBORA, 1947 , O FADO DE CADA UM from 1948, ABANDONO, 1962 , ( this poem speaks about her lover being taken during the night never to be seen again and this was a reality for many women and understood by everyone to talk about the secret police ) these are mostly from old movies but they show the evolution of Fado in different eras and styles). There's a style very specific to an area near Lisbon that sings about their great love for the Lezíria ( a region where they breed bulls and horses mainly) horses, bullfights, specific to that region and usually sang my men. Then there's the Fado de Coimbra. Coimbra is a city one of the oldest ad most revered cities in Portugal where it was established an University in 1537. Back in the late 19th century only men went to the university so the Fado there has a strong tradition on male voices and since they were young men from very prominent families the lyrics are different and the way of singing is also very different, More erudite, more polished , the young students sang of young love and the beautiful eyes of a pretty girl, their experiences as young men finding their first love, their friendships for a lifetime, the sorrow of the end of their free student life as their lives as doctors, lawyers and so on had to begin. And with the years Fado also evolved and even singers who sing the traditional Fado also sing a more free style kind of song, Fado Canção. The roots are the same, often the way of singing is the same, but the music ( tune) and the lyrics diverge from the traditional. ( you got that with Dulce Pontes singing Canção do Mar, that is a traditional Fado from the 60's sang in a modern arrangement with her own style but it's still Fado)

I might have commented about the Portuguese guitar player Luis Guerreiro. He’s played with so many different Fadistas including Mariza, Carminho, Carla Pires etc. I do have a suggestion, Balada de um Amanhecer by Marta Rosa which is soooo incredible or Carla Pires Voar Alto. Luis Guerreiro is on both of those playing the Portuguese guitar.

We also have a more light version of fado called "desgarrada" ( mostly in the Lisboa aera) witch is a challenge between to singers where they try to mook each other, many times, a man and a woman. The way to "dance" this kind of happy fado is just right shoulder up, left shoulder down, right shoulder up, right shoulder down...repeat

There is no Spanish Guitar on that stage and, remember, Portugal is almost one thousand yers old ( since 1143 ) and romans, Celtics, Arabs, Islamics we have received all those cultures and later also África influence! We exist 400 years before the ruling kings were able to achieve the actual borders.

This type of fado is called a "desgarrada". It's more fast-paced, showing off the virtuosity of both players and singers. In this song it was the two lead guitarrists who were "outmatching" each other, but in some other fado songs it's between two singers. 120 years before there was rap battles there were desgarradas in fado of Portugal.

Let me suggest you to read Fernando Pessoa poetry. He is a great poet worldwide knew and I am sure that with is poetry you will better understand this portuguese song called Fado, why it is patrimony of humanity. You lose a lot not understanding the letter of the songs, some of them were written by great portuguese poets.

There is in Portugal a diferent kind of fado( also very traditional), called "fado de coimbra", witch is more a type of ballad( also uses the spanish and portuguese guitars), played by the students of the university of Coimbra( located in the center of Portugal). Usualy adresses the love to a girl or the sadness for living the city when they finish their studies.
