Usopp's name actually comes from 'Uso', the Japanese word for 'lie', and 'Aesopp' of Aesopp's fables. He is 100% intentionally based on The Boy Who Cried Wolf.

Usopp seems like one of Oda's first attempts to cram as many puns/references as possible into one character. Don't misunderstand, I am aware he does it with earlier characters, Usoop just seems to test how many.

15:24 "What's the design of this room?" The production crew actually found a building they could entirely dress up as they liked for the purposes of being a villa. That particular room was, once upon a time, a swimming pool.. but they use it as a kitchen. IMHO it succeeded pretty well, since it gives a very unique architectural vibe to the place!

I'll probably be the 50th person to mention this but: the fun extra little detail of the strawhat crew and the outfits they change into is Not just a live action thing, they are based on designs from chapter cover art and other art pieces Oda has done over the years, it's a great way to work in both not having the crew literally wear the same One outfit for the entire time as well as give a lil more fan service

I think one of the many reasons One Piece adaptation works, is because the creators and showrunners embrace the silliness / goofiness of the original source as well as understanding several of its core messages.

Classism in asia from east asia to southeast asia where I'm speaking from, is a type of classism unlike something you'd see in current day London or something, because we're still heavily influenced by holdover colorism from feudalism and got further muddled with white supremacy after it was introduced by european colonizers. So in my opinion, it's not unreasonable to read the prejudice Kuro/Klahadire displayed in the anime being as much as about colorism as well as classism, considering the original text was written by a Japanese man. But that's just my two cents tho...

Yes, the game is called Go, though there are several variants. It's one of the oldest games in the world, and really interesting! Glad you enjoyed this episode so much! It's one of the low points of the season for me, which means hopefully you guys will keep enjoying the entire show!

Speaking of Go, while it is not "The Queen's Gambit", if they like K-dramas they might want to watch "Reply 1988" on their own time. The series from 2015 includes one of the teenage friend group being a world-class Baduk player. (It is a minor part of the story, but we do get to see some Go tournaments.)
@countingtls
@countingtls 6 месяцев назад
I wouldn't call the rule differences in modern Go "variants" (territory scoring and area scoring are ruleset differences in scoring methods, resulting in slightly different scoring), and they have a common origin - the ancient Chinese Go. We can say modern Go is the off-shoot of the ancient rules and customs (there are actual Go variants old and new, which are generally not played or known by most Go players, which in East Asia range in the tens to hundreds of millions). The second match between Garp and Koby is a real historical "match" between professional Go players - between Rin Kaiho 9p and Kobayashi Satoru 9p in the 1997 tv blitz tournament (早碁選手権戦, and both players are famous pros in the 1980s and 1990s). But the first match, from my own perspective, looks more like a game between vastly different strength players (and not finished), probably in the strong kyu to dan range (kyu and dan are both ranking terms in Go, this is about middle-to-high amateur range), not the best players like pros, but also not novices, and certainly not comparable to the 2nd match. And the 3rd match is actually a copy of the first match, almost the exact finishing position (several stones were "misplaced", and made them illegal, most likely neglected by the prop department) And people really need to rediscover the anime/manga - Hikaru No Go (ヒカルの碁)

Klahadore wasn't being rascist in the anime lol. He was being classist/casteist because Usopp is the son of a pirate and not of an elite rich person like kaya is. Racism in One Piece largely only exists between humans and other species/humanoid races like Fishman, etc. Racism in One Piece is based on real physical differences between the various races and not something superficial like skin colour. Those differences have consequences for various characters and nations. Yet, the message is still that the various races should coexist as equals despite their differences however real those differences might be.

i still can't believe how good the casting was for pretty much everyone in this live action show. Klahador and koby especially, look like the real life versions of their characters, i can't ven imagine someone looking more like these characters for real than everyone they got, especially Zeff, when you see him, he IS zeff. I've seen a bit of complaints about the fisheye lense use for this episode, but I rather like the interesting camera angles & movements that this allows. Your insight into actor contracting is an interesting angle I hadn't considered. I also think they wanted to focus more on the characters with the extremely limited time they were allocated & start hitting the series themes (like following your dreams) bit more blatantly & a bit earlier.
@magus104
@magus104 6 месяцев назад
fisheye and cinematic blur are very overused in netflix shows. im not sure if its because they want to add a filter to the sets thinking they might not stand up to the HD video we now have? i love set designs and not being able to see them clearly is a shame and defeats all the effort the designers put into the show. Though looking back at old tv you can tell a lot of things were done because they figured people would be watching on a CRT with low resolution, bad aspect ratio with scan lines so you could get away with a lot just off the bad tech we were viewing the stuff on. Kinda like how in black & white shows chocolate syrup was great for fake blood. Now we see these remasters of stuff and can see how some set stuff and makeup doesnt hold up so well.

Anyone who plans on adapting a fantasy/scifi series should watch One Piece if you ask me. The series is hardly without flaw, but it proves that above all if you capture the main characters and the tone of the story, fans will take even massive changes in stride. That's a lesson many recent adaptations should have taken to heart, because it is the biggest one which caused them to fail. This episode is nothing like the manga or the anime. They changed the setting, many of the side characters are different, aside from the key plot events pretty much everything else is different and yet it truly feels like One Piece. In each scene you can see the love for the story and the hard work they put into translating an absurdist fantasy comic into live action. Edit: p.s. I don't think we're meant to take Kurahadol as being racist in his disdain for Ussop as much as classist. He doesn't care about Ussop being black, he cares that he's a poor riff-raff son of a pirate hanging around his wealthy mark.

Ultimately it comes down to respect. Changes are fine as long as they’re in line and make sense. The problem with most adaptations is because the people behind it DO NOT respect the source and use it as a means to push their weird fan fiction. And if you want proof of this, just watch an interview or read up on their reasonings for why they made changes, etc.

@@fernandozavaletabustos205 Exactly, they don't do that shit that i so hated with DC especially where they thought it all had to be more "realistic" and "dark & gritty". Only the Tim Burton movies did that right for me, it was still very comic like and even in the dark there was always light and not those stupid depressing grey fog all the time that Snyder so loves. And then they brought that shit even to Superman, who lives in sunny Metropolis and not in rainy/foggy Gotham dammit. Btw.: i also really like the Fantastic Four movies with Jessica Alba because of that, they are goofy but so were the comics and they are more or less accurate to that. Only Galactus was of course really really bad.

Vincent Reagan does a fantastic Garp, so much so that I really want to see an interview with him on the role (what little I searched, I found none, though that was still during the strike). and yes, that whole contractual thing will be a nightmare for a LiveAction of One Piece, and will become one of the biggest hurdles for the Writer Room going forward (that while working in the constraints of the bugdet, which will become it's own hell for the show ... also age exists in real-life - we already said our Goodbyes to so many VAs, be it the japanese or respective regional dubs - there was a character whose VA died after his recordings for 2 episodes) .

I didn't remember Kuro expressing *any* racist comment towards Usopp in the manga. So I went back and read those chapters again. *He doesn't.* The only possible comment you might be referring to is when Kuro said Usopp was "the son of a filthy pirate", which is not a slight on his ethnicity (which was undefined at the time, anyway). Is it possible you had a faulty translation? Or is it a manga / anime difference? I don't remember him saying anything like that in the anime, either, though. 😅 Is it both? Is it two steps down from the original text? Is it something that only happens in the English dub of the anime? 🤔

So the game you see played here is Go. It's a 3000+ year old game, and I think it's used somewhat interestingly here. In particular, while Chess is more a game of attack and defense and using all of your unique pieces to their advantage, Go is much more about the bigger picture and maneuvering yourself into a better position on the wider scale. As a couple of side notes, (1) the way both actors hold their Go stones would be considered 'amateurish' and could indicate that these characters are mostly or completely self-taught (although given Garp's position it's more likely this is just a miche oversight), and (2) Garp ending the first game by playing a move and then stating "the game is over, you've lost" in the board position we see here would generally be considered pretty rude in the Go world (there are exceptions to this, but still)

In the anime/manga, Oda had 30-40 chapters to hide smaller hints and easter eggs about future arcs.He introduces characters literally years before they are useful, I think in some cases literally decades. In the live action, they need to string the story together in a bit more of a direct way by having characters interact that never did in the original.

Kuro isn’t a racist…that point confused me. Kuro treats Usopp horribly because he sees him as a threat to his plan. He tries to control every aspect of Kya’s life and Usopp is the only thing he can’t control. He also sees him as a fool but there is no human on human racism in One Piece. Classism sure but not racism.

guys, its japanese, kuro wasnt racist to usopp, darker skin in anime is just people who are outside a lot, there is a small minority of people in japan with very tanned skin in the southern islands. until the live action usopp wasn't depicted as anything other than just the guy with a long nose.

In Japanese the word for lie, as in to tell a lie, is “uso”, hence the name “Usopp” and the long nose like Pinocchio

Nerdy claiming Fishman are very racist against humans will age so well. And shows how new / not far along he is to One Piece.

Probably too late now as you’ve probably already watched episode 4 but there’s a massive spoiler in the next episode that you wouldn’t know about until much much later in the anime. Just wanted to give you a heads up. Hopefully someone told you about that earlier and you’re aware.

I can't remember which video(s) I saw it in the comments of, but I know I read once or twice of someone giving him a heads up. I know for sure I saw it at least once before he even watched episode 1 of the live action. I hope he did see the warning so he at least could prepare himself for that "fun fact." I'm hopeful that once he knows it, he'll be looking forward to how it'll happen in the anime.

Kuro was never racist towards Usopp. He puts Usopp down because Usopp is the son of a pirate. More like classist. PS at least in the manga. If the anime introduced racism, it's just badly adapted.

Yes it was definitely classist, which does notoriously intersect with colorism in asia in general, like everywhere from east, southeast, to south asia. But I don't think it was what Oda was going for...

Yeah I've watched and read one piece and never did Kuro come off as racist to Ussop. Only classist, even then it was an act. Kuro just finds him extremely annoying.

Yeah it's been so long seen I've seen the anime I was like what the hell? Did I miss something. But you are correct. It was classism, not racism.

Actually, Usopp is supposed to be white in the anime just like in the manga. Toei just made him darker for some reason. Check out official art works by Oda.

Enjoyed your reaction. I agree I really love the Garp & Koby scenes. I look forward to you seeing more Garp in the next episode. I really like episodes 3 & 4 but they are my least favorite of the LA. I watched the East Blue saga of the anime after watching the LA and this was my least favorite arc of the anime. IMO, the show only gets better from here.
