I believe he broke a string, and switched out. One of my favorite SRV songs.

He also plays and sings Look at Little Sister with Jeff Healy. Jeff is wild, brilliant, creative and blind. He plays one hell of a duet with Stevie.

This is from his second and final appearance in 1989 on the PBS television show, Austin City Limits, (Austin, Texas). The other song you seriously need to check out from this appearance is Riviera Paradise which is considered Stevie's masterpiece. He's on top of his game, happy, healthy and drug/drink free. Joyful comes to mind, and it shows.

He switched guitars because he had broken a string during that solo. If you have a really could ear you can hear when it happened. You would barely know though as Stevie recovered and Played through flawlessly after it breaks though if you look closely you can see the broken string out there flopping around during the last bit of the solo. Then he signals the guitar tech to bring the other guitar and switch them out which again if you hadn't seen it done you would never notice because Stevie never missed a beat.

The string broke! Loved the switch, so smooth. ♥ Glad you got to this one. I love his voice and this performance. I am the "little sister" in my family, with 5 older brothers. Sad to say only two are left alive and I'm the baby and only girl. This song would make me giggle remembering my older brothers still saying I am their little sister and I am now 73 years old. :)

I love your SRV reactions!!! He was known to be so humble. He is by far my favorite of any genre. I second the suggestion of his Rivera Paradise It is mesmerizing ❤️ And still would love for you to check out the Tin Pan Alley featuring Johnny Copeland. And please watch until the video stops. It is so heartwarming to see his obvious friendship and admiration of Johnny.

He was a kind humble man who had to struggle quite a bit in his life. He had a difficult childhood with an alcoholic, abusive father who did not approve of Stevie's obsession with the guitar. Luckily he was taken under the wing of some of the greatest bluesman who mentored him & guided his early career. When he hit the big time he always paid the most genuine respect to those men. He almost died from drugs & alcohol but had the inner strength to get clean & sober for the last 4 years of his life. He went to heaven at the top of his game; musically, physically, spiritually and emotionally! To illustrate how decent a person he really was, he insisted (to his managers disdain) that all the money earned be split evenly with his guys. This is unheard of in the music business.

I love this one too! It's a fun tune and the 4 of them are so tight! Reese on those keys and the smoothest guitar swap ever! And yes. He didn't sing early on. Had a female blues singer in the group. But his voice is so much better than he ever thought.

Yep, snapped a string in the middle of that solo, and I'll bet 80% of the audience didn't even notice it, looking right at him. The man doesn't miss a beat. Just plays the notes he wants on the 5 strings he had left until the swap. Of course the catch is that all 6 strings run through a floating bridge. Very often with that setup (and even occasionally on fixed bridges), if you break one string it changes the tension across all of them, and throws the tuning out. So, he was also doing things to cover for the tuning issues.

Watch the video again, he introduced Reese Watters as he passed the song to him for the keyboard solo. SRV broke a string which is why he did the switch if you look again during His solo, his high E sting is dangling but he finishes the solo as he nodded to his tech guy to get him another guitar..

If you look closely just before he switched guitars, you can see the broken string flying around as he’s playing.

Broken string. What you saw was an amazing guitar tech. He saw the broken string and took care of business. Guitar is a Fender strat. No special name. The guitar he was playing at the beginning isn't named "number one", it was simply his favorite guitar. There was a joke among Stevie and the band calling the guitar his " First Wife". It was a 1963 Fender Strat with a neck from a 1962 strat. Stevie went through a couple of necks. ****TRIVIA**** During an MTV unplugged segment Stevie played a 12 string guitar. He was so heavy handed when he played he actually cracked the neck and he only played two songs!

When he was a kid he learned how to ride a bike with no hands he played his guitar ride down the road play his guitar. Did it all the time. He was my brother and my HERO!❤❤❤❤

He had a woman lead singer at first , but she left in a huff so Steve stepped up an said I’ll do the singing. It’s all in a documentary you could find if you look. It’s a great documentary I think you would appreciate a lot.

Before double trouble he was in a band called triple threat. The lead singer was Lou Ann Barton. He sang a few songs during the set. When she left to pursue a solo career. The remaining members change to double trouble and he became the lead singer.

you asked about the guitar change with no apparent tune change, i can't say for sure, but he was well known for using 13-gauge string so it's possible that with all the bend's in his music style that the guitar change is simply due to more than 1 sting breaking as he was known to just keep playing if just 1 broke but if a couple broke then it would need to be replaced. The man played hard (RIP SRV)

Also that guitar it's called Scotch. Because I believe on the butterscotch color finish. His main guitar is called number one. Or his first wife

he broke a high e string, if you watch closely, you can see the dangling string, he then knods to his tech wich guitar to bring, and the broken string giutar had a new string and in tune by the time the song ended, thats how a good guitar tech rolls

He was not a boastful person. A reporter ask him one time ( who was a better guitar player you or Jimmy Hendrix?) Stevie said Jimmy was better. There are interviews with S.R.V. You could look up as well an you are correct when you said he seamed to be very humble witch is unusual in this industry.

Also " As the years go passing by", "Angel Eyes", "Look at little sister (with Stevie Ray Vaughan), "When the night comes falling from the sky (from the movie Roadhouse w/ Patrick Swayze)", "Lost in your eyes", "While my guitar gently weeps", " Hoochie Coochie Man", "Confidence Man". Jeff was also a huge Jazz Man and there's lots to react to in that genre for Jeff Healey. The dude is a Legend!!!

Yep he broke a string and he used the heaviest gaged strings made he always had 3 or 4 bake up guitars on standby for a popped string. You didn’t want to grip check him😂. And he thought his voice wasn’t any good so he didn’t like to sing.

Doyle Bramhall Sr was one of those individuals who encouraged him to sing. U2 acted like fools in Antone's in Austin one night playing and singing the blues with Stevie and Jimmie Vaughan. Total farce. Ppl were disgusted. So yes, blues isn't easy to sing or play despite being "simple".

He did break a string I believe it was the b string (second from the bottom) atleast that's what I was told.

There are better songs in his catalog IMO - it's a good song but it doesn't move me like some others do. I still suggest listening to Long Way From Home with his older brother Jimmy. That song lifts me out of the chair!
