The best description of Stevie Ray Vaughan’s voice I ever heard was from John Mayer. He said it was “honey over gravel” and I think that’s perfect. He’s my favorite guitarist of all time and that voice seals the deal
@@napoleonwilson6499 not so much anymore. he's still pretty verbose and overly descriptive sometimes, but man has he changed overall. he plays with the remaining members of the Grateful Dead now.
Manuel Usteri yeah they said right before his death he had gone to like 9s or 10s on family style cuz he had tendonitis but still sounded the same and that just goes to show tone is all in the fingers.
I love how Stevie just kinda lays back and keeps the rythm pumping for him to shine on the keys. This band was always so tight and just "in the pocket" everytime they took the stage. So many of the musicians of today could learn so much watching them.
According to Stevie’s tech, he most often played GHS Nickel Rockers (and sometimes Boomers) in the following gauges: .013 -- .015 -- .019p -- .028 -- .038 -- .058
Most people don't realize how difficult is is to bend like he does for a whole set strung with 13s. Well for mere mortals anyway. I tried it once out of curiosity and have never done it again.
Consider: from the moment he broke the string to the time he hit the first note on the replacement guitar, it took precisely 30 seconds - and zero beats missed! He and his crew were badasses!
Sure was, I have some fond memories of watching this with my dad back then. He hated all the music I listened to but when this came on PBS back then we were both I think equally blown away. A true master of his craft.
Chiller1967 does anyone know what month it was recorded? You can see the backdrop is Austin City Limits - just an excellent show & SRV was Clean&Sober & performing & sounding just so good RIP SRV You’re A Guitar God Dude
Yes, I saw SRV, Eric Clapton and Jeff Healey together a few months before SRV died. It was just one long jam session of 3 amazing guitar players enjoying themselves. Pure art!
Omg 8 just saved that video and could not stop laughing but then Stevies passing away on hospital bed kinda got me til he was revived guitar in hand and finished the song!R.I.P....SRV or crank it to 11 in guitar heaven! ✌💛🤘
Pride and joy. Anywhere, anytime. Consistently guitarists favorite. I've been goofing around with guitar for 40 yrs. I would LITERALLY give my little toe to be able to not only play half as good but to be able to commune with God via my fingers, heart and soul. I have dropped into the zone while playing but SRV is a whole another level. Peace, love and hope. RIP BROTHER
Try "Cold Shot" and "Mary Had A Little Lamb", yea the nursery rhyme, from this same Austin show. Funky as all hell and plenty of your church organ in both. IMO the best performance/concert here on RU-vid by anyone.
Big thanks to Rene Martinez, guitar tech supreme, for the seamless switch over. Both Rene Martinez and Cesar Diaz(RIP) were the guys behind SRV's incredible sound. Having seen Stevie twice while he was alive, it was the closest thing to a religious experience that I could imagine. It's what motivated me to be a better guitarist and performer.
The sober SRV lol i met this guy once he was a friend of my aunts so nice he just ate and played for us it was so cool. He also bought her the house i grew up in . A master peice of a man.
Ummm, sorry... ZZ Top ain't even close. They may have started out with a unique sound and style for Texas Blues, but then they sold out for commercial air-play. Stevie was always true to his roots and didn't take nothing from any record yahoo.
Your reaction corresponds with what I've always thought--SRV's singing gets overshadowed by his guitar playing, obviously, but he had a good smoky voice that was perfect for the genre. And he wrote a lot of his own songs, and the lyrics are worth listening to. I had a friend from high school who was actually in drug rehab with him, before he was famous, and from what she told me, his songs came from deep down. That what he brings; it's not just his musical genius, it's that he really puts his whole being into it. You can feel it when he plays. (note: while we're admiring that smooth guitar changeover when the string broke, let's also give a hand to the savvy stage hand who was right there and knew exactly what to do. Kudos, Mr. Stage Hand.)
@@Rustafarian71 I saw him in 1985 opening up for Dire Straits on the Brothers in Arms tour - 2 of the greatest guitarists of all time in one night - WOW !!!
@@reallymysterious4393 Man, I swear I was just listening to "Sultan's of Swing" The Very Best of Dire Strait's Yesterday! Bought the CD about a month ago. Great minds and all that. Haha.
I have watched another reactor to this video and he was not paying enough attention and didnt even NOTICE dude switched guitars. :) Thats how good stevie is. People went nuts in the comments
..."he didn't miss a damn beat...(then you said>>>)"atall"...lol Man, you are now officially, my only reactionary channel...that's it! The only one. I consider it a blessing in one's life to know or be friends with, 'real people' people who are true... true to themselves and to everyone around them. And just by watching you react to videos, I know that you are one of those people. Seriously, it's privileged status when watching your videos. Thanks for watching Stevie Ray...he was one of the finest!
You know how you can tell he likes it for real? He isn’t acting over the top with every verse and guitar lick. He’s listening and not giving nonsensical nonsense.
That's not sweat pouring from his pores, it's soul. Pure soul. RIP brother Stevie. The world of blues music is a better place, just because of you. Miss you.
Sooooo glad you finally reacted to this one! So many great moments all in one. From the absolutely PHENOMENAL Reese Wynans to the smoothest guitar swap EVER! Haha. Nobody could touch Double Trouble!! And how about that stage hand?! Great job swapping and getting it set up with ZERO interference! That’s a man who knows Stevie!
So amazing how he completely changed his life.. Getting sober and clean and coming back ABSOLUTELY better than ever. I think about that, his recovery, brings me to tears!
You make me love SRV all over again. And when you look right into the camera b/c of a tasty part, it goes right into my soul, and I go, “That’s right! , you’re hearing what you’re hearing!”. What fun! Love you dude, TY!
@@LittleTrixter Jeff Healey was another of my heroes. I saw him live at a radio station concert, KATTFest, in the 80s. He was 3 feet from me. Man could play the blues!
Watch "Tightrope" from the same live performance.. SRV with some attitude!! Stank face for days!!! If I could see one reaction video, it would be for this song! 👍
Just wanted to say, I really appreciate the respect you show to the entertainers you review on your videos. It doesn't matter if they're musicians, comedians, ventriloquist or whatever, you embrace their chosen venue and enjoy their talents like the rest of us. You go into each one with an open heart, mind, and soul. Keep doing what you're doing and you'll be around for a while. Gil
I remember sitting with my late husband and hearing the news that he had died in a crash... so heartbreaking. We had recently watched his PBS performances and were big fans. I'm so glad to see others being introduced to his music... he was one of a kind.
Cocaine and whiskey fueled greatness right there. It's so sad that he got clean and then lost his life in a different way. I take it back, this was 1989, so this was after he got sober.
You gotta give it up to the guitar tech to have the presence of mind to have the guitar ready for the switch and then fasten the strap as SRV is playing.
SRV is probably the greatest guitar player ever to walk this earth. But some forget he had a voice to match his playing. I wish I could've seen him live, imagine being there and watching him do that. Freaking AMAZING!!!
got to see his last show at Alpine Valley...drove home to Chicago and when i got to school the next day, everybody was upset..thats how i found out about the accident. My first day of my senior year to boot
@@TheRagratus saddest part was he was happy and sober..he was stoked to just be there. I didnt rank him high in my guitarist list because he was a sloppy, but amazing player...then i heard Riviera Paradise when he was sober...Double Trouble and SRV were a machine when that dropped...no masturbation, a true group effort
More great blues performers to check out: Lighting Hopkins/Elmore James/Sun House/Albert King/Robert Johnson-originator of the Clapton song ‘Crossroads’/Leadbelly/Sonny boy Williamson and so many more!!!! I’m an old rock and roll girl but it wouldn’t have existed without blues music.
I sure didn’t mean to leave out the women blues greats!! Check out: Big Mama Thornton/Bessie Smith/Ruth Brown/Sister Rosetta Thorpe-great blues guitar player too!/Etta James/Koko Taylor/to Janis Joplin/Bonnie Raitt-also great slide blues guitar player!! Many more!! You will recognize many songs as songs rockers interpreted in their own ways.
Jamel, I love you Man! Your reactions to what you see on these videos is priceless and validation to what we all felt the first time we saw them!! I love your reaction channel, KEEP IT GOING, I neeEEED IT!
Jamal, You're awesome! Please note, SRV is the ONLY guitar player on the stage. So, if you hear a guitar it's all him! BTW that guitar is named Lenny, and it's a legend unto itself.
You gotta do a reaction video to SRV Dirty Pool live Montreux 1982 it's such a bad ass song ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lFsPYyj7mIU.html
This was both the first song and video I ever saw of SRV back in the autumn of 1999. Right after I saw this, I learned he’d been killed in helicopter crash years before. Talk about a high and low in a span of five minutes!!
2:56 "That's for you baby" finger point and I've been dying to see your reaction to the guitar switch. If you look real close, Stevie didn't break the little string and didn't miss one lick.
Jamel_AKA_Jamal: Here's a suggestion, if you haven't already done it. Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble - Cold Shot (Live From Austin, TX) The song is what is known as a Blues Shuffle beat.
Please react to Jonny Lang. Lie to me Darker Side Leaving to stay Breakin me Still wonder Goodmornin little schoolgirl Back for a taste of your love He’s a blues singer. Started I think when he was 16 years old. When you hear his voice, it doesn’t sound like it. Also he’s great with a guitar. Thanks. Keep it up!
I spent many hours sitting on the bluff of the Muddy Mississippi River in Memphis listening to that straight up magical blues guitar. Great memories of Stevie Ray, he’s one of the best. RIP.
Love!!!!!!!!!! Glad you did a live vid with this, saw him live several times, before he was "known", and after..He broke the stings alot! Never ever missed a beat! One of the greats gone too soon.........
