"Unbiased" Review: 2023 Honda Civic Type R

What’s it like being one of those people who Honda deems cool enough to want to hear from? This was awesome. Matt, in a lot of ways you’re like a Honda. Undersized, underpowered, kind of funny looking, but you’re dependable, and you get better with each release. So that’s pretty neat.

this was an absolutely wonderful and definitely not biased review. Really shows just how much the "other" car review channels hide about these events.

I could watch reviews like this all day. Now I want a --full catered resort-- Honda Civic R.

I generally never, EVER watch car review videos from much anybody, especially my favorite RU-vidrs. But this one is different, as I love your dry sarcastic humor, and that shines through regardless what you are doing...... building a track car, building a speed record racer, and reviewing a new car. Enjoyable video, even if it was a new car review.

Definitely the most objective, professional and entertaining review I've watched in ages. I'm just sorry Matt suffered so much to bring it to us. I suppose that's why we appreciate his content so much.

This channel has turned a corner from gritty and challenging rustic desert landspeed racing to posh and spirited new car reviews, and the sarcasm came along for the ride. Great content- keep up the good work.

Now that's one of the most objective and professional reviews i have watched on RU-vid about the 2023 Honda Civic type-R hard to find a channel that doesn't get easily swayed by a fancy resort,honda selected food, top shelf alcohol or even a luxurious choffeur service

I definitely like that they've reined in the styling a bit. This seems to be the perfect mix of aggressive and refined without devolving into the previous generation's "edgy" aesthetic.

Matt, this is the first time I’ve seen the ‘schmoozing’ included so much in a car review and it was great to see that it in no way interfered with your objective review. I’ve never laughed out loud so much in a vehicle review. Look forward to the next one.

I don't even care about car reviews and mostly here for funny engineering. But this was indeed a professional and very objective car review, good to see you didn't let all that good food influence it

My neighbour was a Honda mechanic. He has a prelude then a wreck came in but the engine was ok so he bought it. Rebuilt the engine put it in his car and sold his engine after he rebuilt it for what he paid for the newer engine. It was fun watching and helping with the whole process.

I just want to say that I really appreciate the honesty that you always seem to pack in your videos, especially this one.

I have to say, I would love to not have to deal with tyre pressure sensores. On our car, every time you switch from summer to winter tires and vice versa, you have to program the sensors again. I know this is an unneccessary complication from the manufacturer, but not having sensors at all completly removes it. Also its something less that can break.

I really hope you do more of these videos! I follow dozens of other car reviewers on YT but this type of content blows them away! Way more entertaining! Car, food and resort reviews, you’re on to something special!

Superfast Matt never disappoints!!

The early Honda Civic all had an almost Tardis-like ability to seem much larger on the inside, than they appeared on the outside. They also all handled far better than one would expect. I remember racing a Porsche 924 through traffic on the Mass Pike with my 1975 Honda CVCC, and frustrating the snot out of the "Porsche" driver. I know the NA 924 was a fairly slow car, but it handled well and had more than double the hp of the Civic.

Honda spent money wisely by having you there. I have zero interest in this vehicle but listening to your adroit and clever dialogue is always highest quality entertainment. And since I’ve now heard your review. I’m qualified to recommend the Type-R to any 20-something dude who asks me about it.

Damn I didn't expect you to be so honest about the things people who review stuff receive on top of that, I knew it will be different but honesty was the last thing I could expect

My wife's UK FN2 Civic Type-R GT cost £19,000 in 2007 and she finally traded it against a Ranger last year. New car prices are ridiculous these days.

The calculated TPMS seems like a good idea for a potential track car because you don't need to make sure each wheel has a sensor when you're often swapping sets of tires for track use.

Ok, I’ve been binging your back catalogue for a week or too, and love your projects, and your style. But I usually not into review videos unless I am researching an actual purchase, but you made this enjoyable. I think you should have a 2nd channel, where you just kind of review the regular stuff in your day. I bet you would make it enjoyable, and the algorithm would love the constant posting! 😂

Thank you for highlighting the ways that "unsponsored" content and videos can still be influenced by the companies with the experience they create around showing off a product. They wouldn't be spending $10,000+ per person if it didn't work.

Wish they still had the tail lights they had until the 2021 model, those were lowkey iconic and made it easy to spot a civic at night

A cheap Toyota Corolla has TPMS sensors. I don’t like the idea of not having TPMS sensors, but when I was a Honda tech I appreciated it because it made changing tires easier. No sensor to damage.

Dude I’ve viewed a LOT of car reviews on RU-vid over the last couple of years and this channel has never shown up in my feed. It seems the ole algorithm 💩 the bed on this one. I quite liked this honest, unbiased review of the CTR. Comedy goes a long a way with me and I enjoyed the humor in this review and I think the assessment of the Type R was spot on. Instant sub for me.

Being from Sonoma County in north central California, nothing else is like wine country that I’ve ever been too. The sun, the air, the rain, the corners, the roads, the streets, hwy 1, etc are all amazing. I just can’t put up with the prices of everything and some of the people.

A couple of days ago I watched a video of the new Corvette Z06 and got really bad "need to have" feelings.... Now I need a Honda. Great video!

Had you not shared this, or even worse, told us you stayed in a generic hotel with only continental breakfast food, well that would be a clear indication of your bias... His closing is exactly right. Even in ATVs, and motorcycles. Compared to every other brand Honda just works. Doesn't mean it's the "best" but it's "good"

I came for the showy home builds, I stay for lines like 'somewhere between an airplane middle seat & a BMW 7 series.'

the problem with that kind of tyre pressure monitiors is it only detects sudden punctures of one wheel. i knew a lady in work who had a bmw E90 with the same type of system. i told her all her tyres were very soft, she didn't believe me as the tyre pressure system never triggered, i asked have you ever checked them, nope because she believed the system would tell her if they'd gone down. as they all went down gradually the system never picked it up. got my tyre inflator out and they were all 8-10psi.

The smile on your face while driving was the give away you were listening to Best of Jay Leno's stand-up comedy. Couldn't have been the car... what kind was it, again?

This is a question from your brake lines video. You mentioned using pink Teflon tape on the threads for the flare nuts. I mentioned this on a forum and got blasted. Apparently many builders disagree and say absolutely no tape should be used or needed. Could you provide some advice? I'm about to run lines on my kit car and don't know if I should or shouldn't use tape. Thanks man, love your vids and your chill attitude. You're not one of those guys who fakes being overly enthusiastic or excited to boost viewership. You know...the "WHAT IS UP RU-vid?!?!" intro kinda channels. Keep it up 👍

4:37 As a non native English speaker, "Dry Aged Burger" sounds like something you would find in the back room of a Red Light District.

From my experience with a 10th gen SI: That TPMS issue you mentioned was present on my car. No matter what, if I drove more than a few hundred miles at once, it would throw the pressure warning light. It would also just randomly throw the light. I took it to the dealership a few times and they couldn't fix it. It's just a bug with Honda's system that I think isn't fixable... So if you do end up getting a honda civic, just keep a tire pressure gauge on hand in the car, and familiarize yourself with the tire inflator kit thingy they give you. If your tire is just a bit low, then there's no need to fill it up with the goo, just use the inflator as an air pump. One plus was that the car is communicative enough that I could tell when my tires were low, just by how the car felt when going over bumps...

i am far more confident in your ability to resist bias by describing in detail how much they attempted to wine and dine you. i have absolutely no clue which reviewers get this extravagant or even more extravagant treatment and which are riding in on a 30 year old rusted bicycle, running on 3 pieces of bread and 3 hours of sleep, and if i did, i might have a better level of confidence. basically, every review should find some fun way to tell us about what the companies have done to get their review.

I really enjoyed your not-at-all-biased, completely objective review of the new Honda Civic Type R, which was in no way influenced by your flight and chauffer arrival, paid food and lodging, provision or car and/or the colour it may have been, or hors d'oeuvres and steak dinner following the event.

Since you were “forced” to do a car review by the non-influencing catering, you did OK. But I still much prefer your garage content, and non-voluntary off roading through Death Valley. As always, looking forward to your next video.

I’ve absolutely had my TPMS light come on when exiting a freeway in a “spirited” fashion in my base 18 lol. On the plus side you don’t have to worry about sensors when you swap wheels.

Thank you for doing this. Frankly, I'm a bit offended they thought it wasn't necessary to charter a private flight for you to go to the resort in order to convince your audience (so, me) to buy a new Type-R.

Am I the only person who liked the original Honda Civic. I may have been too tall to comfortably drive it but it was so gosh darn cute, I just wanted to tuck my arm around it, pick it up and carry it home.

Mercedes use the same sensorless TPMS and others too. Benefits are the tyre fitter won't rip the sensor off with a tyre iron.

I can remember when the first Civic came out. The shape of the car doesnt seemed to have aged. Its still a good looking car even today
