Which One Would I Pick: Honda Civic Type R or Hyundai Elantra N?

I'm reviewing the 2023 Honda Civic Type R, and this time I'm making this video for my 3 year younger self. 3 years ago I looked closely between the Hyundai Veloster N and the Honda Civic Type R, just like a lot of people did. I ended up with the Veloster N because it was the logical choice for me at the time.
Now that there isn't a Veloster N anymore and the Hyundai Elantra N is carrying the torch, would I go with the new generation Honda Civic Type R, or stick with the Hyundai N brand?

Elantra N Owner here, wanted a FL5 but saw the ridiculous markups for it and decided against it. "Investment", "It's a Type R", "It'll last forever" sure it's the most beautiful CTR ever, but I grew up with two NSX's in my household, so sorry guys...it's not that special to be 80k CAD , 51k sure that's acceptable for possibly the last ICE CTR, I would accept that and instantly buy it, but to buy it with dealer markups on it...that's a clown move. EN does 80% of what the Type R does, just slightly inferior and doesn't have the badge worship like Honda does obviously but eh to each their own.

Though the Elantra N’s DCT is less engaging than a manual - especially a Civic Type R manual - for an automatic transmission it’s very engaging. The crazy fast shifts, upshift burps and downshift blips, paired with the exhaust pops and crackles, makes driving an absolute blast each and every time. It makes you feel like you’re in a much more expensive car and makes the car feel much quicker than it actually is. And if you want to be more physically engaged, you can throw it in manual mode and use the paddles. It still has the feel of clutch slip and grab, so it’s unlike any traditional automatic. I obviously love it. But if I absolutely had to row my own gears, it’d be hard not to really want the Civic Type R or Integra Type S.

@@van_der_lindeDAI mean, that is some pretty ridiculous criteria. Anyway… If you want journalist results, just go check out the Car and Driver test results for each car. Type R has a 0-60 time of 4.9s and 1/4 mile time of 13.5s. Elantra N has a 0-60 time of.4.8s and a 1/4 time of 13.4s.

@Symphoniics

@@van_der_lindeDA There’s a Throttlehouse video of a non-octane learned EN 6MT barely losing to the Type R in a drag race. If octane learned, it would’ve been right next to the Type R. Now as far as track driving goes, the Type R will be faster most of the time, but for $10k less, the EN sure makes it quite competitive!

Multiple Long Term Honda owner here. 99 Accord 345k miles(still doesn’t leak oil),2014 Odyssey 200k plus miles(best car we’ve ever owned),2018 Type R put 80k miles in one year(no issues),2021 CTR(no issues). I love the BMW engineering put into the Elantra N and its performance to value ratio compared to the CTR but have seen too many comments/videos re reliability/poor dealership warranty experiences and for that reason I’ll err on the side of caution with the FL5 CTR or another reliable brand. Just FYI…My FBO FK8 with labor,lightweight wheels,fuel system,tune,etc. added 12-15k on top of its MSRP(which is possible) which puts it in the neighborhood of the Lexus IS500 with its bulletproof V-8/overall reliability. I realize it’s apples and oranges but mods aren’t free so cross shopping turn key cars that can be financed is something to think about…

Civic si - $29,100 EN - $33,700 CTR - $44,795 (w/o markup) And EN is being compared with the CTR. No brainer, EN is the much better value. If Hyundai comes up with something for 45k, I think it'll eat up the CTR. That just goes to show how much Hyundai improved over the years. Now only if they can make engines and trans that doesnt blow up haha...

If your budget is mid 30s the EN is a no brainer. Brings you the minimum you need to have fun. If budget is not a problem and you find a CTR at MSRP (easier today than last year). The CTR is an excellent choice. Offers a superior craftmanship with real brembo brakes that outperform the ones found in the EN. Lots of cornering grip capable of holding over 1G. Wider body, wider tires, stronger chassis that don't need braces in the way of your cargo needs, the best manual transmission in the segment, beautiful and unique body lines that stands out over the base model, solid K series engine with excellent history, among many other things. All those little things add up and if you care about details the CTR is the way to go.

I had a 2022 Elantra N brand new, fresh off the truck, but traded it in at 26k due to reliability issues and Hyundai making it an absolute hassle to actually use the 100k mile warranty and them never giving me a loaner nor a rental, but had my car for 2 weeks each time. I got a 2021 Honda civic type r with 14k miles. I can say that Honda is, more powerful, better build quality(Elantra had creaks and while it looks nice on interior it’s with cheaper materials), surprisingly in comfort mode type r rides smoother and less harsh on bumps then the Elantra N, more trunk room, better sound system quality, but Elantra N has hands down better technology. I can trade loss of better tech and heated seats for better reliability, handling, speed, and quality.

I own both a 22EN DCT and a 22 Sonata N Line with the 2.5 and the EN is loads faster. The size of the engine isn’t the solution. It’s the tune on it. They would have to spend a lot of time and do a lot of testing to somehow make the 2.5 even close to the tune on the EN. I’ve beaten 3.0Ts and 3.3Ts plenty of times in my EN. Especially from a roll.
@thecamdenyard
@thecamdenyard 7 месяцев назад
@@TheRealBobWillkins you really should contact Albert Biermann and pitch the idea of less displacement is better because of the tune 😂 The N-Line trim is never going to be a better performing car from the factory than the N. @esantiago8989
@esantiago8989 7 месяцев назад
@@thecamdenyardthe N-line 2.5t sonata makes more power than the Elantra N. Stock vs stock however the Elantra is more responsive and quicker but not faster on the top end. Sonata will chase it down at 140+mph. 2.5 does have more potential but needs the support from tuners. It’s also dual injected so with tuning it definitely has a higher performance ceiling than the motor in the current Elantra. As it stands today, it doesn’t have enough support so the 2.0 in the Elantra is the way to go for now

Bro is bragging about a standstill drag race in an automatic vs a manual😂. Sure enough both fk8 and fl5 would start to creep up regardless and WILL pass you given they are more powerful. Same concept when your driving on the highway/freeway or normal road conditions since you don’t have to launch the car. On a roll/ in motion driving it will walk you detrimentally again given it’s more powerful and the fact that you don’t need to launch the car. I love how all these people trying to justify why a cheaper car is better than a car that is objectively better and more expensive. Everyone talking about 0-150-0 test and how civic is slower lol. Both are track cars, not drag cars, if you’re taking an Elantra N FWD as a competitive drag race car I question you. Going by the 0-150-0 test, the gt3 rs must be a worse car than turbo s and a z06 and god forbid more expensive than both. Both the Elantra N and type r must be worse than a Kia EV6. We get it you’re happy with your car, don’t be overcompensating with all this “oh I walk type Rs all day in a stock N”

Its not a $10k price tag difference, it's more like $30k after dealer markups. Civic transmissions have been known to grind second gear so idk where your description of a flawless transmission came from. The Elantra also comes with far superior warrenty than the Civic. Do your research a bit, for your channel's sake...
@ShiftingLanes
@ShiftingLanes 8 месяцев назад
1. Dealer markups are market and time dependent. Can’t control what the markup will be at the time of the video or 3 years from now… so I can only go by msrp info because that is known. 2 manual trans opinion came from actually driving all that I listed, if you grind your gears, I’d look at your own driving. 3 Hyundai comes with longer warranty for original owner, true, but I make no claim that it is superior or worse than Honda’s in this video.
@tommylee4135
@tommylee4135 8 месяцев назад
@@ShiftingLanesWhile it is true that you cant know what the markup will be, but it's almost certain that there will be a significant markup and you've never mentioned that fact when you said the Civic is only $10k more. Everyone whos actually in the market knows this isnt true so should you. This is the disconnect between car reviewers and actual consumers. I'm just saying know who your audience are. Look into Type R 2nd gear grinding issue, it's widespread amongst Type R owners and Honda has been ignoring them. Yes, you've never mentioned Hyundai's superior warranty, which is another reason why I believe this review was bias and incomplete. Just take it as constructive criticism. You risk alienating a lot of people who don't want to pay stupid prices for a car that's supposed to be in the affordable range.
