Unboxing, Set Up & Initial Thoughts on My NEW Playstation Portal! 

Regarding having a Steam Deck! I was a Q2 pre-order & they have come out with better models since then. I tend to experience a lot of overheating with mine, and whenever I tried to install the software needed to use the remote play app for Playstation games, it didn't work for me. The process was also extremely convoluted and frustrating, and I just didn't care to continue the set up. Plus, I like my Steam Deck for JUST my Steam games! I'm a very simple person, what can I say?

On a separate note. The number one accessory i recommend getting first is Dbrand Thumb Stick grips. Not only do they look like PS official grips, but they may have noticed Portal sticks are smaller. This makes them regular size and WAY more accurate. They also double as Stream deck grips, so if you have em already then your set... 😉👍

I've heard very mixed opinions about the PS Portal, some people love it and other people have no need for it. The main people who I've heard get the most use out of it are parents. I'm glad you've got your PS Portal, your use cases are very valid and it sounds like you're going to have a great time with it; looking forward to your review. I personally have a Switch and a Steam Deck (it is very chunky indeed) that work perfectly for my setup 🙂

I got this for Christmas, and I LOVE IT! I love being able to play whereever I go. Making traveling so much better and not having to haul around my laptop, or whatever. I will say, sometimes it does stutter if you will. I guess becuase its working off Wi-Fi and not wired. But its not a big deal. As you stated if you have a REALLY good connection, there shouldn't be any issues at all. That's the only thing I can say about this, you gotta have a REALLY GOOD connection, on both ends, since its connecting to your home network as well.

My portal has been the best purchase in quite some time. I use it daily when I go to bed. My total gaming time has increased considerably and I’m currently playing through Stellar Blade. I love the ergonomics of this device and it fits my hands much better than my Switch does. My local wifi has been stable enough so playing has been constantly enjoyable experience. Perfect device for playing older titles as well since smaller screen is more forgiving with the graphic details. I dread the day it might break - seriously thinking getting a backup one.. My gaming history (finished games) on Portal so far. GTA V story, Dragon’s Dogma, The Arkham Trilogy and currently Stellar Blade. No complaints.

Hi Miranda I’m so happy for you and I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do. My recommendation as mine were well on Wi-Fi but after I hard wired it to my router my experience with it got even better I’ve only ever saw a few disconnection warnings but it never did. I hope you enjoy it.

It’s good they are using opaque screen protectors on new devices. Biscuithead me has been known to own something for years with a clear one before realizing I forgot to peel it off.

I love my portal. The colors are so vibrant. I can verify it works when you are 3,500 miles away from your PS5 provided the wifi is good Get you some blackout curtains. They will block the light and dampen some sounds.

I just ordered one yesterday. I am excited to have a better streaming device for playstation rather than using an app on windows. My main use will be taking it to work and playing it on my down time without having my playstation with me. (such a heavy device)

1 thing that the higher ups at PlayStation have talked about a bit is cloud streaming to the PlayStation Portal and that being something that could come to the device down the line. All the PS3 PS4 and PS5 games that you can stream to your PS5 with a PlayStation Premium account you'll also be able to stream to your PlayStation Portal without the need of a PS5. All super early but with how much the positive response of the PlayStation Portal has surprised PlayStation themselves it seems like it's a thing that will happen So people won't need a PS5 to enjoy this device which will mean even more sales for PlayStation and more people subscribing to PS Plus, it feels really clear that is is gonna happen so that will be fun

If the latency works for you, it can be worth it. But it seems to be a gamble, regarding routers and such.

Awesome 👏🏽 video keep up the good work, and yeah the PlayStation Portal is fire and great to play anywhere in your home, and even travel with using a hotspot or travel router but I enjoy it I play mine everyday! Been having it since launch day, and they have tons of screen protector that work for it and cases but always remember to leave your PS5 in rest mode so you can always access it. I'm fairly certain that the Portal can only work if it's on the same network as the PS5 it's connected to. It's more or less a glorified screen to play on from anywhere in the house but not over the internet itself.

Center touch pad? You touch the screen and rectangle(s) will appear. Then, you hold down/tap on one of the rectangles.

Great video! I'm curious of your "away from home" experience if you could show that next :). I'd like to use one of these to play like FF16 and to use this from like hotel wi-fi or different state on someone elses wifi like you mentioned your parents.

I ❤my PlayStation Portal! The DualSense is awesome 😎 and the screen is perfect 👍 I use it at my Dad’s house and somehow I connects to my PS5 like 20 miles away! Totally awesome being able to play all my favorite PlayStation games. Thanks Sony!

This is awesome! I remember when I received my PS5 fairly recently and was amazed at how simple everything was when connecting it to my phone app and laptop. As you mentioned, your experience is likely due to how old your current phone is, so hopefully, when you decide it's time for a new one, it will connect without issue. I know from your tweets the benefit of being able to play it from visiting your parents, and that to me is mind-blowing being in a different state! 🥳 I can't wait to hear more about your thoughts on actually playing it are! Congratulations your going to be playing everywhere just make sure you do the correct settings on the PS5 change your HDMI settings I turn off the HDMI device link off then go to video output and change your resolution to 1080p I turn off my 120hz and I have my PS5 on Wi-Fi but if it works better for you connected to the router then even better but I love it and use it every day 💯 Enjoy and have fun Girl 💯

Turning the brightness down slightly and shutting the controller light off helps the battery life quite a bit. Welcome to the portal club!

Make sure to hard wire your router to your PS5 for the best experience. Also if you install updates on your PlayStation Portal make sure to reset it after installing the update (which isn’t a hard reset) and mine works best when my PS5 is in rest mode 👍

I got one not so long ago I used it as a extra thing to help get plats if I can’t be on the TV like in my bed and the living room things like that

The Playstation Portal is a interesting idea + smart portable device, but I don't like the idea that you need to keep your PS5 on at all times as well as a stable Internet connection being a requirement in order to use the Portal.

I just… _don’t get_ how this thing can exist, be $200, and be considered…a good thing, I guess. Not when it is rendered _completely_ superfluous and inferior…by a Backbone controller that is exactly _half_ the price. Yes, this can Remote Play PlayStation games from your PS4 or 5, including from anywhere in the world if you have good internet. But that app and ability have existed for _years,_ like ten years at least, and can be run on computers, phones, tablets, even Apple TVs. A Backbone controller plus a phone, and you _already_ have _ALL_ of the functionality of a Portal. Yes, the Portal will have a bigger screen, 8” versus the biggest iPhone, for example, being 6.9”, but…will that really be _that_ big of a deal to anyone? Especially compared to the rest of what I’m going to say? And yeah, the Backbone doesn’t have motion control, but that’s hardly essential for virtually _any_ game out there, at least that I’m aware of. Especially since you can turn off motion control requirements for most games if you need to. But then, moving beyond the _one and only thing_ the Portal can do, there’s also the same functionality of PlayStation Remote Play, but for both XBox and Steam. So instead of just one platform, a phone controller (Backbone or otherwise) gives you access to three, including all the benefits of PC gaming like mods. _And then,_ on top of that, there are also all the games that can be run natively on a phone…especially iPhone, as it’s up and coming in that field. There are full, _PC/console versions_ of games like Assassin’s Creed and Resident Evil that can be played natively _on iPhone,_ which a Backbone would let you play…and a Portal would not. And, of course, there’s Apple’s recent allowance of emulators on the App Store, meaning you can also use a Backbone to play games from GBA, NDS, NES, PSP, and who knows how many more. So to recap, Portal can: 1. Remote Play your PlayStation 2. …..That’s it. Backbone (or similar) on a phone can: 1. Remote Play your PlayStation 2. Remote Play your XBox 3. Remote Play your gaming PC 4. _Natively play_ PC and console level games on recent and powerful enough phones 5. Play emulators for _many_ older handheld and even full-sized consoles from Nintendo and others. And the only benefits Portal has that the other doesn’t are a bit of screen size and motion controls. And on top of all that, the Backbone can come off the phone in a second and is collapsible, and so more portable than that big, unwieldy pad. Plus, with a Lightning or USB-C cable, as appropriate for version of Backbone, it can also be used as a controller for tablets and computers? If the need arises. How does the Portal justify its existence????

I just got one last Saturday and I really like it, I can still play PS5 when my wife wants to watch TV. I thought about getting one for a while now, I just stumbled across this video and fun fact you uploaded this on my birthday. You just got yourself a new subscriber :)

For the best experience play it with the TV off, change resolution to 1080p on PS5, turn off HDR/VFR and 120fps. You obviously also want to wire your PS5, but for more obscure tips. On your PS5 network name, press options to change signal to 5ghz only and set MTU to manual. Then slightly lower it to 1473 from the default 1500. Follow all these tips and you'll have a flawless experience, enjoy! 😉👍

I went through the convoluted Chiaki Steam Deck process. It was a lot to tweak for me too. I set it and forgot it, but I totally get the simplicity thing. I buy so many things that do the same thing and I do have a little FOMO for this as well. I even did the controller grip thing for the phone. I'm drowning in the options lol. I sometimes do go to the phone option over Steam Deck because it can get heavy over time. I've heard the Portal is lighter. Enjoyed the video.

So 15 minutes in what I heard was you need a second portal 👀 because you associate your desk with work, so if you use this for work well if you want to play games on it you’ll associate it with work. So get a second one that you can customize and decorate and get fancy to leave on the couch to play 😃

I just finished my New Game Plus with Stellar Blade, and the game really is Stellar (pun intended). I just started to play Dragons Domga 2 yesterday.

I just got a PS Portal myself. If you still haven’t figured out the touchpad it’s on the screen. You gotta tap the screen to bring it up and then if you wanna hit it you double tap it. Get a pen stylus if you don’t already have one.

I wasn't so sure about this new PSP but I decided to give it a chance and I am so happy that I did. I was so surprised with it. Didn't even realize it was going to be touch screen. It plays everything and it looks so good.

I just got one too. Haven’t set it up & used it yet. It came about the same time my dad was hospitalized hence I’ve been dealing with that this past week…

If you are away on holiday or family time away you can take it and play a game at a very long one depending on how long you are staying

As an Xbox / Microsoft gamer, we can play our games from anywhere as well we just have more options . Such as phones and laptops.

In my opinion, this thing is pretty useless...
