I hope it all works out for you on the job front and you can continue creating your dream home. Re the slug problem, DUCKS! There are a lot of misconceptions about chickens and other poultry/animals eating slugs and snails, but ducks really are great for this. They eat the adult and eggs of both molluscs. I had one duck that cleared my garden and all my neighbours used to chuck their molluscs over as well. After she went to a new home (they need company) my garden stayed pretty clear for about 18 months! Indian runners tend not to eat the shoots either so win/win. Or a small pond to encourage frogs and toads.
@WestCorkWander
@WestCorkWander 6 месяцев назад
I would love ducks, but I am a bit nervous about taking them on until they have my full attention. I feel chickens are easy and can be added at anytime, but for ducks they need a bit more thought. But look I think they would be great for slugs and I had heard about the Indian runners being light footed on plants and shoots. Thank you for your comment 😊

Loss of jobs sounds like a real opportunity guys! You can focus fully on your renovation and food self-sufficiency. Doing this work part-time while still employed was really tough for you both. Hopefully now it will be less stressful as long as, I guess, you can get by financially. I get a sense it will be fine! Kxx

I know the uncertainty of the job situation isn’t great on the face of it but to be able to focus your full attention on being able to just work on the house full time it might just be a blessing in disguise for you all. Fingers crossed it gives you the opportunity to be able to have the summer ‘off’ from the craziness that has been the last year for you both. What a beautiful area that you live in too, so close to the coast like that, I can see why you chose where you did. Wow Clare look at all of your crops! So exciting, everything is coming on sooo well! So far we just have a few little seedlings on their way that Lukas has planted, but it is a start. Ooh nearly forgot…..great haircut Rob! I’m sure everything will work out just the way it is supposed to for you all. I was going to say embrace and enjoy the time away from work….but you’ll have lots of other work in a different form but I hope you enjoy the freedom of all the hours to work on the house.❤

Geeat project been bunge watching since i found your vlog. On the gardening side of things,cardboard ist is definitely the way when making new beds. As for the mulch,it may be better to either add it to compost heaps with other compostable materials or make separate piles and let it rot down then use as a mulch,reason being fresh wood chippings can rob the soil of nitrogen.

Amazing work accomplished! I live in an area that hedges and fences at every opportunity. It helps with wind, safety and beauty. Is it on your list anywhere to add a hedge or fence along the back of your property so the highway isn’t visible? There are self-replanting shrubs that aren’t costly. Also, how many acres do you have to tend? Hat’s off!🎉

Hi guys a bit of advice on the spot lights. You need an air gap around them which I did when fitting my spot lights but found living in the house there were serious drafts comming down from them them. I I had to go back and place a terracotta flower pot on top of each to provide the air gap and it’s fire proof. To seal I foamed around the outside of them. Massive saving on heating. Keep going folks it’s hard but push on. I got a book 20 years ago call home electrics. It was the best buy ever still use it even though the internet is hand but can’t beat the book.
@WestCorkWander

Regarding your tooth extraction. If it was an upper rear molar you had extracted your illness may be caused by a sinus infection caused by bacteria getting into your sinus cavity from the site of the removed tooth. Sometimes upper molars intrude into the sinus cavity, when the tooth is removed a hole/passageway remains which connects the 2 areas together. Resulting in a nasty infection which is extremely hard to resolve without a small operation to close up the hole. I had this horrible infection which mimicked flu like/sinus infection symptoms problems 2 years ago. I went to and from the dentist, with the concering sinus infection issue, who performed the extraction for 6 months, before I changed dentists. I was diagnosed with a serious sinus infection problem caused by bacteria from the molar cavity which required emergency surgery. If it was an upper molar you had removed I'd strongly recommend you go back to your dentist and request an x-ray or scan to see what's going on

Curious, you said you did planning. But it seems you don't get into a room and finish it before moving on to the next. Completing a room would give you some positivity going forward. Not trying to be critical, just speaking from.personal experience.
@WestCorkWander
@WestCorkWander 5 месяцев назад
You are right, but we tend to finish a job rather than room. Like plasterboard the whole ground floor before taping etc. or concreting the floors. Only hiccup to that was when the kids wanted a room for Xmas, then we paused the build to get them a halfway decent, but unfonished space each. We hope to finish the kitchen and downstairs bedroom completely and then go back up to the kids rooms. It's been hectic as we are on a tight timeline from the government, but after the deadline we can slowdown and get more focused and take our time.
