As an Uncharted fanboy. I enjoyed watching the film. Tom played Nathan well. Mark played Mark well. Yeah it's not an Oscar film, it's not as good as Indiana Jones or National Treasure 1. It's a popcorn flick. It's better then the Mortal Kombat and Tomb Raider reboots. It's a 7/10. I'll watch it again. I can see potential if it gets a sequel

It's weird how the executives waited 6 years after the release of Uncharted 4 to be like NOW WE SHOULD MAKE AN UNCHARTED MOVIE. If they made it 6+ years ago during the highs it would have made more sense to cast Nathan Fillion given that he was younger.

Biggest insult to me was how they drastically changed the story of Sully and Nate. In the original, Nathan met Sully when he was a teenager and they both tried to steal the same treasure. Sully recognized something in Nate, hinting at a past where Sully was in the same place Nathan is now, and he didn't want Nate to end up bad. Thus he became some sort of mentor, which later became a father figure. They trusted each other and cared for each other. In the movie however.. Nathan already is a young adult and Sully sees him pickpocketing, saying "hey kid. You're pretty good. Want to do a complex heist with me where I try to find the trail of an ancient treasure?". And throughout the entire movie, they constantly bicker and don't trust each other. It was not even close to the characters I love.

"Raiders of the Lost Arc" was one of the first and one of the best Hollywood adventure blockbusters, and pretty much everything after that just kind of mimicked what it did. *EDIT:* Oh geez, I'm sorry. I actually had really a fun time watching this. In my head, this worked as a different version of Uncharted, separate from the games, for a distinct reason: if the movie was trying to exactly copy the games with actors that were 100% identical to their counterparts, I’d be really disappointed because it’d remind me of the games moreso than this one did and tarnish the stellar reputation they have, because those are an experience the movies can’t match. For me this works because while inspired by the games it takes a separate approach that is distinct and different enough that I’m not constantly thinking of the games.

It's sad too because Uncharted had the potential to be great, to tell a great story. I know a lot of people are gonna say it's because Tom Holland as Nate, but personally I think he was a great choice. I love when filmmakers make crazy decisions, as long as it doesn't hurt the integrity of the film. With this movie though, it really feels like they saw the cutscenes and set pieces of 1-4 and then watched the Nathan Fillion fan film and just mish mashed them together. And considering Uncharted is known for it's over the top set-pieces the sky was the limit of what Nathan Drake could've done. But just living the Uncharted Greatest Hits is boring, as a fan of film and a fan of the Uncharted I want something fresh something new and exciting. Certainly they'll probably make sequels, but if they're as soulless as this one? You can forget it.

For me seeing Tom Holland and Marky Mark as Nate and Sully gave me the same feeling I had watching Tom Cruise play Jack Reacher…they’re just the wrong actors for the rolls, not from a talent perspective mind you, it’s just they don’t embody the characters that we know so well. In spite of that when we finally get Tom throwing on the shoulder holster and hearing the Uncharted theme kick in I couldn’t help but smile. It’s not a perfect transition to the big screen, but I’d totally see the sequel. Also the finale being two 1500s era ships hoisted by helicopters flying through the air is the most video-gamey set piece that you just know came from the cutting room floor of one of the games.

I'm glad to finally see someone who has the balls to admit that Tom, while being an ok actor, is horribly MISCAST in this role. It's not just that he's 'young'. He's just NOT Nathan Drake. The mannerisms don't match, the face doesn't match, the body build doesn't match. This would have been a much better movie if they had just changed the names of the main characters and the name of the movie. Thank you Jeremy!!!

And like I've always said, a video game adaptation should be in the format of a tv series. Not movies. You can't condensed 20-30 hours of gameplay into a 2 hour movie. But in a tv series, you definitely can. That's why I'm very worried about the Metal Gear movie. You can't fit a single Metal Gear game into a movie. The cut scenes in the games were more than 2 hours. Just look at The Witcher. It worked so well as a tv series. Imagine if it was a movie. You can't possibly capture the essence of the game in 2 hours.
@ginge641
@ginge641 2 года назад
You kinda can, because unless it's something like Metal Gear, games are mostly gameplay stringing together story sequences. Cut that part out and you can lose a lot of time.

@@ginge641 i agree. but for games with massive Lore like MGS or GOW, i think its best to stretch it out into a series like The Witcher in order to establish the world of said game. But its frustrating that Hollywood always opt to do these sort of movies sort of like some generic action movie instead of having good story writing. I guess they still haven't figure out that its not just about the action sequences that makes us fans love games like Uncharted/MGS/Splinter Cell/GOW, its the whole story telling part of the games. The story is what captivates us. This may debatable but i think so far only Sonic The Hedghog movie was pretty great and fun. Anyway, appreciate the input. Kudos.

I refused to see this movie mainly because I don't want to give movie studios the impression that they can completely miss the mark regarding casting, thereby taking a property many people hold dear, and destroy it all for the sake of that mean green. Uncharted 3 gave us the perfect origin story of Nathan and Sully. It had adventure, tension and heart. Nathan was also much, much younger in their first meeting, which made the encounter that much more touching as a grifting young Nathan finds the father-figure he desperately needs but also someone who will give him the freedom to be himself. But the movie decided to reduce that endearing encounter to the two of them meeting in a bar. But thanks for this review as it confirmed everything I imagined it would be without having to watch it.

I knew they were going after a young teen audience and not us gamers that played grew up with Uncharted. I'm not surprised, but also I just thought the directing and script were really tight for a new adventure movie. Miles more entertaining than say the pirates franchise.. Holland and whalberg somehow made me not too upset that they were poor live renditions of the characters in the games but pulled off the fun charm which has a ton to do with their chemistry, personality and script. If Holland had darker features and were a bit taller I'd say he's exactly Nathan Drake as far as everything else he did.

One of the major problems with games being adapted in to film, especially the RE movies, is these people think that most fans love the games because of these big set pieces or particular moments from the games...which we do, but where they fail is at the little things. The characters, atmosphere, and tone are what make those moments and set pieces so memorable. Sully is just Marky Mark reading dialogue for a character he doesn't understand or connect too. Wahlberg is a good actor, but not a good Sully. RE WtRC tried to recreate a lot of iconic things from RE/RE2, but failed on almost every aspect because they didn't understand the characters or their motivations. We connected with Leon because he was a naïve but good guy in a terrible situation trying to do what he though was the right thing, a rookie cop trying to save lives. Claire had nothing to do with Umbrella until after RC. Claire and Chris were orphans, making her and Chris closer. Claire didn't run away from her brother and Raccoon City, but she did come back to look for him when he was missing. She connects with Sherry because she has those strong family motivations. Both Leon and Claire want to protect and save, but both have different motivations. If you don't understand the characters, how can you write for them?

I remember the pulse-pounding action scenes from films like The Spy Who Loved Me--that opening skiing scene, or the scene in one of the Mission Impossible films where Tom Cruise is outside the tallest building around. You are half right Jeremy, the entire movie was clearly crafted around the casting of Mark Wahlberg. You must have forgotten that he was originally cast as Nathan Drake but because of a decade of development hell, they opted to move him to the Sully role. Must have been a contract thing. It seems like by miscasting him a second time, they the bent the whole around that mistake. "Well since Sully is younger now, we need to make Nate younger, so who do we have a in our stable of young leading men?" "Tom Holland? Well that's great, everybody loves Tom Holland right?". Then the studio decided to tell the story of how the characters met, but they were too old to directly adapt that story. So then they decided that since they already had to break game canon for that, they may as well just chuck it all. Then with a simple cutting and pasting of a few game elements and Ta-dah! "Kinda, but not really, Uncharted".

This is literally what I was thinking and I haven't even seen it yet. Having played all the games including Lost Legacy I was mostly confused as to why? I mean the games alone are executed so well in story and cinamatic craft why even do this film for any reason other than trying to regurgitate Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg as action stars in different roles. The poblem is they're standing before something that was always going to be superior to whatever Hollywood and Fleischer could come up with. They probably would have sold it better had they not youth washed it, casted Nathan Fillion as, "we all know who" and went with a story more canonical to the video games timeline but even that would be very difficult to map out convincingly.

It's part of Sony's more cohesive strategy to become a media behemoth. It's just a shame they didn't arrive at this point 5/6 years ago
