Loved Dan’s Wahlberg impression 😂😂

Not gonna lie, saw title "UNCHARTED" and for a second thought that meant it was a channel ending announcement, so no more "Charts With Dan".

As a person whose played and loves the game, you're absolutely right about it going the other way with newer audiences. As just a film it's rather enjoyable but as an adaptation none of the characters feel authentic to the games and they didn't even properly utilize one of the best soundtracks in video game history. The action is rather very well done but again everything is more enjoyable when you're playing a game compared to watching a cutscene

Dan you’re among my favorite and the best solo reviewers. You really carved out your own style with razor sharp humor and wit. I like many reviewers but they can only do it with someone else and are horrible at it alone.

I appreciate the category of "Movies of Acceptable Quality." You are one of the few movie critics who give enough information for me to decide if I would like a movie at all, much less if I would really enjoy it. I appreciate comments like "while the third act was patently ridiculous and doesn't hold up to one second of logical thinking...". I am an engineer and that sort of thing tends to pull me out of movies, especially when the conclusion depends upon a "brilliant" idea that is actually impossible. I enjoy some fantasy movies like the Harry Potter series, but a movie placed in "the Real World" needs to follow real world physics. I am one of those people who appreciates when the screenwriters have taken the care to write things that could actually happen. Thanks

Good evening Dan, and thank you for another insightful review. As a fan of the games on which this film is based, I will say that I was greatly disappointed in how many elements from the later titles were squeezed into this film, rather than going for the re-interpretation angle of just the first game's adventure. As a brief aside, you mentioned not being sure whether or not you'd finished the first game years back. Perhaps this will help as your recollection: if you don't remember shooting at zombie conquistadors in a submarine base, you did not finish the first game. 😅

I had no idea this movie went through so much development hell jeez at least it turned out half decent

I had some of the lowest expectations for this movie, but I found it pleasantly surprising. They hit the styisled action sequences from the games in just the right way. Yes some of the action is over the top, but that's the spectacle of the games. I think it's a faithful adaptation (other than Mark Whalberg just doing Mark Whalberg)

Now the prequel is out of the way, Sony needs to give the rights to the mini-film series director and make an Uncharted TV series with Nathan Fillion.

I feel like Uncharted should be Dan’s nemesis. Besides Tom Holland the trailers really put me off of this movie. I think I’ll just stick to the games until this is on streaming somewhere

All the reviews I read told me that I would not enjoy it. It's just as well because I just finished watching it and my lowered expectations made it so much better 🙃

REALITY CHECK: That chopper's max weight limit is 22 tons. Magellan's ship weighs 1200 tons (without the gold). You would need 55 choppers per ship to realistically do that finale.

The first hitman movie with Timothy Oliphant I find to be a very underrated video game movie

I work at a movie theatre and my co-worker and I had an interesting discussion. I said that Uncharted would have a better box office opening than Morbius. I said that Uncharted would benefit with Tom Holland as the lead (banking off the Spider-Man success) while he claimed that just because it was a marvel movie (not a Disney released one), it would do better. I’m curious to see what other people’s opinions are on our theories.

*"Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time"* (2010) with Jake Gyllenhaal is not in the "Video game movies of acceptable quality hall of fame"?!? But why not? It has a totally acceptable quality for a video game movie.

Saw this last weekend bc I knew if I didn’t see it asap I probably never would and it… was fine 😅 Haven’t seen a national treasure style movie in years and this was pretty much what I expected. Will i ever watch it again? If it comes on tv over Christmas then yeah, sure

Old serial adventures inspired Indiana Jones. Indiana inspired Tomb Taider. Tomb Raider inspired Uncharted. Uncharted inspired the Tomb Raider reboot games. New Tomb Raider games inspired a new Tomb Raider film. Uncharted finally gets a film, and of course it resembles basically everything we've already seen/played 🙄

Who else thought when Dan said he was going to talk about the most watched Netflix show in the world we were going to get a deep dive on Cocomelon. I mean yes, technically other shows hit higher on the charts but nobody goes as long and hard as Cocomelon.

Wahlburg impression was perfect

I just watched the movie yesterday and thought it was entertaining even though I like the games more. Tom and Mark feel a little bit young for the roles but I guess if they keep going they could grow into the roles a bit more. In terms of adaptation I think they put a good amount of story bits and pieces from the games in there.

Uncharted is one of my favorite video game series of all time and I really enjoyed the movie! Tom Hollan is a good young drake, Chloe's actor nailed Chloe imo. My only gripe is Mark Wahlburg as Sully, because he was just playing Mark Wahlburg.

Yeah, the more you thought the gameplay elements and story beats from the games were actually quite good, the more bad the movie becomes. It’s like the filmmakers said “well, we can’t just copy the plot of the games, that would be redundant”, so they made changes solely for the sake of being different, but then because I doubt the writers played through all 40+ hours of gameplay to measure against their script, every story or character decision they made for the sake of differentiation was categorically worse. And they also make Nate this sorta weirdly passive protagonist who the plot just kinda… happens to. Sully finds him at a random bar and recruits him for the mission, because hey, I knew your brother. So we get Nate and his brother bonding, and then oh, by the way, here’s Sully. He’s in charge. As opposed to the games where it’s an entire first game of just Nate and sully bonding and only after we know and like them, we meet his brother. So we get more of a sense that they’re a lifelong team and friends, as opposed to just some convenient guy who allegedly is vouched for by my brother. Also, there’s like 40 years worth of time jumps in the games. Just, like, make up any cool action story that you want to and throw it in there in one of the gaps.

Surprised to see that the Alicia Vikander-version of Tomb Raider didn't make it into the Hall of Fame - I think it's one of the most watchable videogame movies ever made (next to the old MK movie and Angry Birds 2). Since I'm from Europe, I got to see Uncharted last Sunday, and I found it kind of bland, and based on the audience, it wasn't made for the fans of the game or adventure movies in general, but rather for the fans of Tom Holland - a teenage girl actually said behind us: "Tom Holland's in it. It must be good."

The games themselves made you question reality/physics at points so that's pretty on brand.

Hey Dan, if you want to see how the movie would look if it were 1:1 Nathan Drake from the games, I recommend watching Nathan Fillion's fan-movie. He absolutely nailed that role with every move, line and punch. I think it should have been his role, to be honest ... and not "Little Nate's Big Adventure featuring Marky Mark". (I have nothing against either one of them, I just don't like what Sony did here.)

I agree with you. I had never even heard of the game before this movie. I saw it for Tom Holland and loved it. It was so much fun!

What do you mean 70% was settled before they chose the cast? The entire film looked to me as though Sony had bent over backwards to shoe horn in every element of the origin story just as an excuse to cast Tom Holland as Drake because he's one of the only things Sony has going for it

Had a lot of fun with this one! I knew, more or less, exactly what to expect going in - a boilerplate treasure hunt, some cool action sequences, and Tom Holland being hot and shirtless for nearly two hours straight. And I got that so! Mark Whalberg could have been replaced with literally anyone else and it would have probably improved the movie. Also, the Tati Gabrielle as Black Cat agenda starts now. Solid 7/10 for me, would welcome a sequel with some of the kinks ironed out! Tom has been vocal about taking a step back from blockbuster action films for a bit though, so who knows if/when that’ll happen. Can see this doing okay at the box office too, theatres were packed here in the UK, and there’s not much competition until The Batman drops in two weeks.

I played the games and I loved the film. It is a popcorn flick that ticked several boxes for this type of genre.

Glad this film seems do be decent, but I think it’s time we raise the standard for video game movies lol. The actual AAA games are basically interactive films.

I thought it was good and fun but I feel like they missed some opportunities with the casting. Nathan Fillion would had been great as Drake and maybe Dennis Quaid as Sully.

I'm a huge fan of the games, & I found the movie to be entertaining. While the movie itself felt mostly like Uncharted, I do agree that not all the characters do, particularly Wahlberg. I find myself wondering if a sequel will have Holland embodying Drake a little more, with a few more years of maturity that would put him right around where Drake is at the start of the first game. Weirdly enough, I think the best casting was Chloe. I thought she was great & actually felt like a believable slightly younger version of that character. Looking forward to the inevitable sequel!

I assume this is a prequel, right? As in, the first time Nate and Sully meet? Obviously, I haven't seen it yet, but the look seems to do justice. I especially laughed at the climbing up the crates to the airplane quick time event!

I have a free ticket credit so I won't lose any money if I hate it, but I'm gonna try to not compare it with the games mainly because Tom is such a different person than Nolan North's Nathan Drake. That'll probably help me keep it separate.

1) never played Uncharted but Tom Holland is enough to get me to see this movie (at some point) 2) Gotta disagree with you about your 2 inductions into the "Video game movies of acceptable quality". That 2020 Mortal Kombat movie was terrible apart from the opening scene.....and I would argue the Sonic movie was a bit better than just "acceptable" even though I'm not a Sonic fan.

Honestly, what I got from this movie is that I really like boat fight scenes. Goonies, Peter Pan, Pirates of the Caribbean, and now this. Anybody got some iconic boat fight scenes? There's just something about swinging on those ropes and using pirate swords that does it for me

As a fan of the games I didn’t hate the film casting little off mostly with Sully but I did not think Mark and Tom did a bad job I thought they were pretty good and this films actually pretty good it had the Uncharted feel for sure and I loved seeing all the little Easter eggs sprinkled throughout. Is the movie a perfect love letter too fans of the games no it’s not but it’s a good start to hopefully a good franchise maybe three films where if a sequel gets green lit they can fix some things in the next one for those fans. I also thought the director did a pretty good job I see a lot of hate towards the director but I’d like to see him come back for the sequel cause the action scenes where pretty good and easy to follow. I am seeing lots of positive audience reviews from gamers and non gamers which is good for Sony maybe in the sequel they can work on getting more positive feedback from gamers but with mixed reviews the film still earning pretty well and I’m going to see it again.

i had low expectations but I thought it was a fine enjoyable flick.

The games are very special to me, so I have been skeptical of a film adaptation all these years. I love the dynamic and back and forth of Nate and Sully in the games. I do plan on seeing the film, but I have my reservations. Ultimately, I just want to play Uncharted again.

Uncharted is my favorite game franchise of all time and went in this movie with low expectations, in fact while we were walking up to the theater I said to my friend “Ready to be disappointed?” But I’m happy to say we were both pleasantly surprised by this movie and really hoping for a sequel.

I liked Tom holland as Nathan drake and I enjoyed uncharted more than I thought I would. It’s a fast paced movie.

SPOILERS! I am a pretty hardcore fan of the games, having played all of them on all the difficulties, collecting all treasures, speedrunning, etc. And I absolutely LOVE this movie! Yes, it is not a direct adaptation of the story in the games, but that really doesn't matter to me. The most important part is that they have captured the spirit of the characters and the feel of the games. Some say that Tom is a bit young to play Nate, but this is supposed to be his first real adventure, so it makes perfect sense. I read a review that complained about the banter between Nate and Sully wasn't there, but a big point of the movie was to establish them as friends. One doesn't just have witty banter with someone they've never met before and don't trust, so it really worked for me. And I totally fanboy'ed all over myself when they included the original theme music, and when Nate made the "Well well well" joke.

Can't wait for Horizon starring Gwenyth Paltrow and later on God of War starring Vin Diesel.

I'm starting to think Tom Holland is becoming the poster child of movies with troubled productions. Between Uncharted, Chaos Walking and Cherry, he sure knows how to pick them.

I still find it weird how the Uncharted filmakers seemed to be in love with Mark Wahlberg. After all he was originally gonna be Nathan Drake even though everyone and their mothers wanted Nathan Fillion instead.

RottenTomatoes is only 39% fresh by critics. But it is a whopping 90% fresh by audiences. That is quite telling.

Good review as per usual.. I’d say as someone who’s played through the first three main entries in the series, and they are all fun, exciting, blockbuster action that has never made me want to go back and replay those experiences. The games are just like the best of what an action adventure movie blockbuster can be but in game form where the mechanics and whatnot are beyond serious complaint.. but those games, at least for me, never broke new ground or had stories that etched themselves into my brain for all time.. I remember the game that had a large snowy set piece was amazing.. but that’s about it.. but I could talk anyone through the metal gear storyline in fair detail, and I haven’t played those games in an even longer amount of time than it’s been since I played all the Uncharted games (sans MGS 5 of course).. Agree with Dan more on this review than almost any other! Cheers!

I remember it was rumor to make when I was in blockbuster one night.

I liked it. Very likable cast. Maybe 1 too many betrayals between the main 3 but wasn't a deal breaker. Gave it 3.5/5.

Holy shit that recap at the beginning about the hardships of this stupid movie was amazingly done.

I would argue that the first Mortal Kombat shouldn't be in the hall of fame. It's so bad. It is the so-bad-it's-good thing, but that means the only good quality is that it is NOT of acceptable quality...

I don’t know anything about the games or the main character but for some reason I have hard time seeing Tom Holland in this role. He’s still too much of a babyface for my liking. Maybe in a few more years he could pull it off but to me this role would require someone like one of the Chrisis or someone like that. And those images of the main character from the game just make me feel even more strongly about this. This role should be played by someone who could grow a stubble or a five o’clock shadow. Tom Holland is no young Harrison Ford (at least not yet).

Videogames can generally leave things open to interpretation, but not Uncharted. Their characters are too well-defined. This was always going to be the movie's challenge. And while I don't think these versions of Nate, Sully, and Chloe live up to their game counterparts, I do think it does pretty well in most other areas. (Great locations, exciting action, the music, etc). So I'd also recommend this- and emphasize that it is a much better adaptation than either Sonic or that new Mortal Kombat.

Hell no I played all the games and I love the characters in the game the movies is nothing like the games I’m not ok with that the movie would have been better trust me if they would have made it like the game with a fitting cast

I remember way back at the start of its development fans were petitioning for Nathan Fillion to play Nathan Drake. Nathan was so gunho on the idea he and Stephen Lang as Sully shot a movie short demo of them to promote their casting like how Reynolds released that Deadpool demo later on. Since seeing that its been hard for me to see anyone else in the roll. As much as I like Holland and Wahlberg too Im not a fan of them in these roles. Comes off as shallow who’s hot right now Hollywood casting. So I think like Dan mentioned I may not like the movie as much as someone not familiar with games as I am.
