Real Deal right here. Scott is a legendary Gunfighter in LAPD. Successfully walked away from all of them. With his success in the field, he taught his techniques. NO doubt he saved several Officers from a early grave. Bravo Sir!

I was hired by NYPD in 1987....similar technology available to street cops. We got the job done with what we had :)

I started in 1991, last of the 6 shot gunfighters. Much like Scotty, we had 18 rounds, a nightstick and handcuffs. It wasn’t until 1993 that my department went from S&W model 64/65 revolvers (158gr 38 special led hollow point) to Glock 19’s and thus the end of an era. Fortunately I was able to buy my model 65 and all my subsequent duty pistols. For cars we had the Chevy impalas. Respect this guy, he is a legend.

This made me smile. I joined an East Coast Sheriff's Department in late 1979. Our Sheriff didn't allow speedloaders because he didn't understand them, and thought they looked "unprofessional". I had gotten into Police Pistol competition, so I knew how to use one quite well. I got to demonstrate them for the Sheriff and he allowed me to use them on the condition that I would train the other Deputies. Fun times.

I remember LAPD SWAT officer Scotty Reitz from "LAPD:Life On The Beat" during the mid 1990s.I still have some episodes recorded on vhs video cassettes including Scotty instructing officers how to shoot their firearms in certain situations.

Great history! As a retired LASD Deputy, I can say that a very useful tool we were allowed to have was the leather sap. The Gonzales 415 was a wonderful tool when the fight was close in. LA Sheriffs Deputies are still authorized to carry them even now. Thanks for the great stories from your storied career, sir.

I observed some Riverside County (CA) Sheriff's Deputies carrying them (leather sap) in the early 2000's when I worked in a Hospital ER. One Hemet (CA) PD Sgt. Still carried a revolver during that time as well. I'd imagine the sap is very "useful".

They didn’t have much in gear, but they did have a department and government that stood behind them.

Began my 30 yr career in ‘68 when we didn’t even have portable radios. Went on the street w/a revolver, 12 spare rounds in dump pouches, cuffs & a long handle baton. I walked a beat w/o a radio and called in from a callbox every hour. I was forced to use my issued .38 in three instances and was lucky enough to walk away from all of them.

My father went in in 83, but my grandfathet went in in 51, my mother's dad after WW1 in 1920, so my dad got to ride with my dad & grandfather in the 60's, so he had to work in a big dept due to nepatism. He was issued S&W 686 ,but could only carry 38 +P+ HP, 12 rd bandalero, Sam Browne, side handle baton, the cars were not new they were LTD II 4DR police pkg w/bubble gum red & blue 200w speaker chrome on top or slick top wig wags headlamps, steady red post spot, amber & blue on rear deck both behind driver's side 200W siren behind grill, antenna for radar on drivers side rear outside window, side mount low band whip antenna big spring, high band antenna, scanner antennas on trunk. I did a thesis on my family law enforcement dichotomy, a dissertation for my PhD on evolution of policing practices counter-productivity & the exclusive need to maintain tradition in law enforcement.

I think he was in D platoon/SWAT & the elite 🕵🏼‍♂️ SIS. The SIS had 12-15 LA detectives led by a Lt. They wore plain clothes, disguise 🥸, often used ccw style guns. The LA police commission rarely acknowledged SIS until the early 1990s.

I was in LE myself for 21 yrs. Never heard the additional explanation of hot sheet. Funny. I remember getting MDT's in 2001. Small PD in a rural county, we never expected to get them at all. Lots of changes.

The patch of the task force 45 is awesome...the best of the best of my country 🔝🇮🇹♠️

At 2:50, the I.D.’s laying next to the Hot Sheet looks like Reed & Malloy’s from “Adam 12”. And they were AMC Matadors, not Ford. Easy mistake since it has been so long ago. Great video, Good Day Everyone!

With my agency we would simply tape the hot sheet on passenger side of car, or make it smaller and place on steering wheel. As a boot I was taught to put our call sign in the middle using a black sharpie.

I would think that the Higher ups in the LAPD Administration would have opted for speed loaders after incidents like Newhall . Scotty's never addressed what the LAPD sanctioned as acceptable backup guns .
