You have no idea how popular Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge comics are in Finland. It's almost like these comics have helped everybody to learn to read.
@garrulus

It's also kind of amazing how different political undertones one gets when the mag is named after Donald instead of Scrooge (like it's in Finland). During the cold war Finland was strongly influenced by Soviet cultural paradigm where anything American was steadily considered imperialistic propaganda. But Donald got through the sieve already in the 50s and never faltered. When you read these cartoons, they can also be interpreted as criticism of capitalism. Donald is often in morbid state of poverty, working hard yet there's never true social mobility for him, in every story he's always back in square one. His struggle for status and income often collides with morality, he makes bad, impulsive decisions out of desperation. Scrooge is miserable and paranoid most of the time, his wealth bringing him great trouble constantly and he's usually the most morally dubious of the main Ducks. The nephews work hard non stop being the most conscientious characters, cleaning up after both Don and Scrooge, and are usually the sole ethical anchor in these stories. Overall, there's great humanity and hilarious, escalating farcicality in Barks' stories that made them immediate classics. There were massive high quality editions printed in Finland. It's been said Barks wasn't always happy about the coloured versions of his comics in the states, but he approved of the quality and attention to detail the Finnish printers had.

13:58 Ask any European outside the UK, Carl Barks is a more important comics creator than Kirby or Eisner, even. Every generation over here that grew up from the late forties, grew up with Disney Ducks comics by Barks or his imitators.

Here in Poland it get's kinda smaller. People prefer Barks over modern comics so... comicbooks get less and less sales BUT Barks collections.

Great video! I've been reading and collecting comics for forty-five-or-so years now, and I still think Carl Barks is my favorite comic book creator of all-time. His Uncle $crooge and Donald Duck comics are still fantastic (as evidenced in this video). It's almost criminal how under-appreciated these comic books are in the United States and equally sad how a large number of fans of the Duck Tales animated series have no idea about the comics.

I used to have a fanzine that reprinted some of Barks' girlie cartoons from the Calgary Eye Opener, that date back to when he was eighteen. He eventually had a full time staff job, probably the longest real job he'd ever had, up to then. Even at a young age his cartooning was full of life, and so was he. As Ed mentions, he had several short term jobs from when he was a kid working his ass off on the farm. I think he remarked that all of the odd jobs and experiences with various weird people and weirder animals gave him a lot of rich story material.

In the early 70s, Gold Key published Walt Disney’s Comics Digest, along with many different Duck comics featuring a wealth of Barks reprints. I was a small child and relished those comics!

On a whim, I picked up a beat up (though readable) Donald Duck comic in a dollar bin. It had a Barks story. "The Secret of Hondorica" and I finally got it. Barks finally made sense to me. The storytelling was so good. Better late than never, I suppose

22:20 Go read Uncle Scrooge in Only A Poor Old Man. You ask for diving around like a porpoise and there you go. I hope you enjoy. Fantagraphics cover for the volume named after this comic shows Scrooge diving too. It's my favorite comic.

Just recently learned about these comics. I remember reading some of them when I was a kid and being fairly engrossed by them. I wasn't even a fan of Disney, but now I know why I liked them.

3.20. Uncle Scrooge doesn't always come away making more money. Pipeline to danger. Seven cities of Cibola/gold. The Philosophers Stone. The money well. Hall of the mermaid queen . The mines of king Solomon. Back to the Klondike. The phantom of Notre Duck. Land beneath the ground. And the list goes on and on where Scrooge didn't make a profit.

In Italy Disney comics are a universal constant, in fact most of them nowadays are done by Italians :) (you guys should check out some of the European authors)

ComicTropes recommended this channel and i`m not disappointed !!! The first comic i`ve ever read were Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck some 35 years ago, but drawn by Italian artists (translated in greek). I remember the Carl Barks and Don Rosa ones were by far funnier...

I think there’s an interesting parallel between Barks and Darwyn Cooke. Both came to comics a little later, with a background in animation, with an incredibly strong grasp of storytelling.

I don’t know if another Glomgold story from that time period, but in Donald Duck comic Statuesque Spendthrifts (1952) by Carl Barks. Scrooge and the rich Maharajah of Howduyustan compete at building the largest statue of Duckburg's founder, in an attempt to prove which of them is the richest. Similar plot structure to these. Even more fun though as the contest gets into the statue size.

Yessir!...I remember that one too!...If I remember right, the Maharajah winds up wearing a rain barrel, as he had to hock his clothes to compete with Scrooge!...It still makes me laugh!!
@Blackadder75
@Blackadder75 6 месяцев назад
@@curbozerboomer1773 yeah that was a good one, at first the Maharadja seems to win, but that was when unca Scrooge was just wetting his whiskers, when he got up to steam the other guy was done for. There is also a short one where a rich farmer shows his farm (the size of Texas) Complete with diamond spurs and endless oil fields. Everybody thinks McDuck finally met his match, but actually the farmer borrowed the money to build all that from McDuck

I find the Scrooge in the later Carl Barks and Don Rosa comics far more likeable. The Italian Scrooge is more unsympathetic and an antagonist here.

I think the most surprising thing about Uncle Scrooge is his long standing popularity in erotic MSPaint comics. There are many characters, western ones especially, that ebb and flow in the amount of erotic fanworks that they receive but Uncle Scrooge is like old reliable. You can always count on someone drawing him screwing someone over.
