Omg, so true. Where I work I have more experience than the 5 guys combined . I'm 59 years old. My boss is jealous of my abilities. When our locksmith passed away years ago they ask me to do the job. I said no problem. When this new boss was hired through Nepotism he saw my abilities. He ended up throwing out about 2 thousand dollars worth of door locks because I was the only one who new how to change them out as needed. Given my age I now just sit at my desk and do nothing. Unfortunately waiting to retire.

They use the same trick every time. 1) Introduce some new manager. 2) Have that manager make a bunch of new rules. 3) Have that same manager strictly enforce those rules. This process levels the playing field so a 30 year veteran has no perceived advantage over an intern.

Hard work, good work, and loyalty do not guarantee success. Bosses often have who they want to advance in mind. Sometimes their choices are not better workers, they are just people the boss feels more comfortable with or who are more like them. You boss may like you and your work, yet won't advance you. If that happens, it is time to find another job, if you want to advance.

I gave my notice yesterday and I will be leaving 2 days before the New Year. I have tried discussing issues with management and made every effort for a healthy resolution. Some managers simply only care about themselves. I am tired of being the reliable employee who never shows up late and doesn't call in. Companies are naive if they think good employees will stay now that this pandemic has made it clear that this is a workers market. Good workers are fed up with self-centered managers and tired of bad employees who call in or don't show up and are shown no consequences for doing so. Starting off my 2022 with a new job. Best of luck to everyone in a similar circumstance.

Another type of undermining boss is the one who "tells you to do the job you are already doing." This, to me, is different from "micromanaging". The boss can plainly see that you are doing your job, but he/ she feels the need to throw their weight around a little bit... to flex their authority, and just give orders because they seem to have missed their order- issuing quota for the hour. I've had a couple of those.... and just left on the spot. When they ask why I'm leaving, I will tell them why. If they threaten my future by saying they won't give me a good recommendation with future employers, I'll tell then that I will dissuade anyone from taking this job that may have to work under that boss. I'll remind the boss that the door swings both ways.

Some bosses have their mindset made up already. It doesn't matter if u talked to them about it. If they don't see or acknowledge ur works. It's a dead end job. Speaking from experience here. I just gave up on trying to be my best. When ur works exceeds expectation, but ur reward doesn't show it. That's a red flag right away. I started to hide my ideas & projects that will benefit me without sharing to my team & the department. In addition, some bosses only see and find faults in your works without understanding it themself.

I had a manager who displayed all the behaviours, mentioned in this video, towards me while also bragging that she was an empower of women in the workplace. She was not open to bi directional feedback as well as condescending (at least towards me). Towards the end of my professional collaboration with this company I was proactive and suggested an innovative way to improve productivity. She eventually gave me permission to go ahead with the project (though very reluctantly) only to try later to take it over (I presume so she could get the credit). At that point I left cold turkey and left her in the lurch. It took me years to regain my confidence as prior to this latest manager I'd had a string of toxic ones (she was the least toxic of them all) who created an entire hostile working culture. At the time I completely underestimated how it would affect both my mental and physical health which took me ages to recover.

I always received positive feedback from our clients and my peers, but never my boss who would intentionally leave me off of important emails and exclude me from meetings. I don’t speak to this person unless it’s through her assistant. I was told not to contact higher ups without a cc of her and her assistant. She’s started fires by burning bridges in my territory, which I then had to clean up. This person is a key decision maker with a tight knit circle in the board, no point in pretending I can have a confidential conversation with anyone over her. Just honing my contacts, covering my own ass, and planning my exit. We’ve had 50% turnover (small org of 50 people) since I started! So I know the problem is bigger than just me. I don’t know why she holds this animosity - and I don’t care, just going to produce and document results and GTFO out dodge.

While it's true that these types of bosses have some (major) insecurity issues, I wouldn't put any of these traits down to incompetence (except maybe micromanaging). These people on some level know what they are doing and this sort of behavior is never OK. You can talk with them about it, but this is their problem which is something you're unfortunately having to deal with. Best option long term is to change jobs and/or bosses. In the meantime, understanding their insecurities can help you weather the storm, but that's about it. In my first job I had a manager who did all these things. When I left, it was like a breath of fresh air, despite taking a lower pay and less interesting job. It was nice having a boss who had your back for a change.

Telling them that you are just too young/ you have some communication problems so they as your boss make sure your clients are happy with you. How terrible is it? Suddenly the next time you meet your clients you sense that they don’t respect you as a professional, like they did in the previous meeting. You feel isolated because your clients are going to provide the feedbacks to your boss when he/ she asks. What can you do?

All signs check-marked and experienced. Went from one extreme with a very supportive boss to the opposite after he retired and his insecure passive-aggressive underling became in charge. Full career blocker and avoided all kind of visibility for me. All suggested solutions other than the last one to mediate the issue did not work. Solution: I resigned and found a much better job in supportive environment, never looked back.

Jennifer Brick: Thank you for your wonderful video. You deserve every success!!!! I would also like to point out that HR is considered by most businesses to be a "soft" budget item; employee relations departments are the very first to disappear during an economic downturn. I've worked in hospital human resources for most of my career (it's my day gig, my vocation is writing fiction) and when recessions hit, our departments are the first to be targeted. Funny (pathetic) story: When I worked for a large Twin Cities health care organization, the volunteer services coordinator--who was working unpaid--was "laid off" and the administration didn't bother to tell anybody. The department simply disappeared overnight and was never mentioned again. You can imagine. It was like living in a Kafka story.

You have explained my current situation at work to the T. You know what is the actual problem with it!?!?! If you leave one company for another, it is a like jumping from the frying pan into the fire! Just give yourself some time and you will start reliving the same problems, the same injustice, you will face the same trauma. I had worked at many different places and sooner or later that abusive, gaslighter manager, boss or college will show up for you again and again and again and again until you are so tired of the same reality at work that you just look forward to retire for good eventually. And, yes... It is hardly ever about the actual work. It is almoust alway about that toxic work environment that kills one's passion for work and zest for life!!!! So sad!!!! For honest, modest, diligent people with good character and people of integrity there is not much od good working places where they are not going to be intimidate, manipulate, coerced and....

I'm here because I just caught my bosses talking about me behind my back. I entered the room and there was an awkward pause and I realised the "this generation is full of snowflakes" talk that was going on was about me. To be fair, I am a snowflake, but that's something I'm working on everyday on this job because it's my first real experience and I'm just now realising a lot of things. But also, it's a position I do by myself, there was NO training and none of my bosses or any of the collegues know my work. It's very overwhelming trying to learn all this by myself, overcome my anxiety and also have to excel at all of it in the first try. It's only been a month and I don't know what to do. Help

There is a root cause to this type of toxic behaviour and if everyone leaves the company because of that one individual then the root cause will still exist and other employees will also fall victim to that same type of behaviour. This is one of the most unpleasant thing in the workplace so there has to be other strategies to deal with this other than to leave or move to a different department. Thanks for sharing your video it was informative.

There honestly needs to be better solutions for toxic bosses. Most have gone from job to job abusing people. I think there should be harder consequences placed on the HR team for not ensuring safe avenues to talking about this behavior. Then, when they are aware, taking appropriate action vs enabling the boss more!

I'm asking myself why I'm going throw a downward spiral at work again? I started my current job less than 6 months ago and there have been nothing except problems nearly everyday for most of 2021. Everything was fine for the first 3 months, and then it felt like my days were numbered, getting called out for every mistake I make, and just an overall atmosphere where it just becomes a shit show (ea-sick calls, mismanagement in my department, and the build up of favoritism and nepotism). However, the owner likes having me there and thinks highly of, but this doesn't promise me job security even though the owner has final authority on job hirings, firings, and other disciplinary actions. I'd like to see myself working there for the next year or so, but everything seems really unpredictable these days where employees are getting fired or let go out of nowhere regardless of performance. I've never been let go or even fired from a job in my entire life, but we're all bound to experience it for ourselves. I'm not concerned about being let go or fired and that's without cause by the way because I know I can have my job back within a week with the help of the labour board and other resources.

I worked at a Research 1 University for 14 years and those are tough situations. If a professor in a hot-shot getting grants, even the department head has no power to alter his behavior, since the researcher brings in the grant money, and the department head is just an "administrator".
