Damn, im impressed. I am happy games like this are still being made. I took much more risks with RPGs in the DS and 3DS days with Dark Spire and Etrian Odyssey being the first "ok, lets see what this is about" impulse buys. Dark Spire being pretty good and Etrian Odyssey becoming a major series (hope it comes back). But since the Switch I haven't taken as many risks, partially I guess because of the steeper price points, but also because I buy so many games on the e shop as opposed to physically and the E shop is filled with so much absolute garbage if I see a game that isn't "name brand" I immediately assume RPG maker/Unity asset flip game. This one looks really good though, so even for the steep price im down. Honestly especially because of the "the game is very grindy" line. I see some games try and get away from being grindy and often just become easy instead. The ideal method is emphasis on technical play and sufficient leveling speed to not be over levelled but not under levelled either for each major encounter, but since that is very hard to do optimally I personally much prefer a bit too much grinding over a walk in the park, as otherwise whats the point of all that team building (Like, for instance, normal pokemon games. You CAN build a really cool and competitive team of 6 or just literally catch any random Pokémon you see and steamroll the game. So why bother)
i noticed that when u dont have a party you level faster, and enemies only appear in a single line, better for aoe. here's how i go solo, pick fighter for cyclone and self heal +counter attack/later in the game you will unlock the brain ability which allows you to use your aoe without using mana you can clear whole dungeon map while having full hp and mp. one man army right there. i dont know why but playing this solo felt like dark souls.
I'm the opposite as I can't play any games that's in first person. I get headaches just watching it. It's even worse when I'm playing. I don't mind the first person battles, I just can't do the first person perspective when walking / running around.
Other than the Spirit Hunter series, I've never played any of Experience's first-person RPGs, though I have the 2 New Tokyo Legacy games (Operation Babel and Operation Abyss) and I heard they were easy enough to consider them as gateway to the subgenre. This new one looks interesting enough to try out honestly. Great review, guys!

I’ve had my eye on this game since it was announced not just for the gameplay but for the amazing aesthetic. I truly thought it was gonna end up Japan only since J-Crawls are such a niche fan base here in the states but once I saw it was launching this year I preordered it next day. The end of my year is gonna be rotating my Switch between this, SMTV & Disco Elysium FC.
Stupid question, i dont know this genre but to me it looks very familiar, since it seems to be just a different take on what western CRPGs used to look like. Not sure if you're familiar but basically Legend of Grimrock 1 and 2 is a modernizing of that type of game play. Do you know how these DRPGs differt from those other games? Alot more grind? What else is different?
@@LaymensLament The LoG games differ in that the critters are always visible, and move around in real time, creating a different sort of combat vibe where you dodge/attack/dodge. In Undernauts and this type of game, nothing will ever happen while you just stand there. Monsters also do not move around the maze - there are random encounters and static monsters, but you don’t see monsters moving around like in Grimrock. Additionally, Grimrock has light puzzle elements with moving floors and fireball traps - Undernauts does not have any of that sort of thing, due to the strictly turn based nature and no real-time things like fireballs to dodge. They are complimentary games to each other, but with several big differences. Both are fun, and Undernauts is extremely well done IMO. I recommend it completely.
Makes me think the anime/manga Black Company also the game series Etrian odyssey with the jobs and boost plus dungeon mapping i really enjoy the Etrian odyssey so happy it sounds like am going to love this game as well.
There is literally nothing new about making your own path in dungeon levels, you can do that in Labyrinth of Refrain and Lost Child as well, among many others.
Own on the Switch, love the setting and gameplay mechanics. Graphics on the Switch are excellent and work perfect with the Switch's portability. Highly recommend this for people who like dungeon crawlers.
There's a solid chance that we buy this game some time, and this review is a key reason for it. The concept of carving our own path is really interesting!
Seems like the Sword City/Saphire Wings collection on PC might've gotten a bugfix? Saw some issues on the Steam forums previously, but it seems to be much better now.
It looks nice (art-wise) and interesting and my type of game, but what's with the almost 60$ starting price in steam. This is not a triple A game like Arise or a Square Enix game, and it is not like you are importing a physical disc from Japan. I would definitely support this if they price it like around 30 to 40. Sapphire Wings cost 50$, from the same dev, and that game at least contain 2 games in one. So I'll probably just wait for a sale for this.
@@hex1233 I get the physical copy. But digital, 60$ is too high. This is not as big budget game as Arise or Guardians of the Galaxy or Bravely Default in the PC. Those I understand the tag price. Sapphire is 50$, and that's 2 games in one. So this should be 40 to 50 at most.

Is it because you don't know? Or you haven't played the others but you kind of like this one? I give your review 6/10.
Inject all XP inc games into my veins. Not enough first person dungeon crawlers that aren't "cutesy" and have deep enough party building and mechanics (RIP Etrian Odyssey)
The problem with the game is that it is extremely slow, the slowest I've played so far and I'm not even talking about the gameplay, even to start a simple dialog takes 15 to 25 seconds which is a long time considering that the game is full of dialogues.
Usually First person dungeon crawling RPG’s are quite lengthy, Sometimes could take you 100+ hrs. At least for this genre from my experience, Etrian Odyssey, Mary skelter 2 & Labyrinth of refrain Coven of dusk are the most recent games that I played that took about 100+hrs.
But how, as a player, do you overcome incredibly samey drab levels? Game completely lacks any sense of exploration with this level of (non-existent) detail.
