Oil Painting Techniques - Small Brush Considerations

One cannot improve at painting with technique alone because technique is inescapably connected to our personal philosophy. Why spend so much time? Join me in this journey while I narrate in my "off the cuff" style about customizing the thickness of wet paint and start to get into the "why" questions of what is valuable about this type of painting process.

Thanks for your helpful explanations and insights. Beautiful work! Holly Hartwell mentioned you in one of her videos on techniques.

Spinal Tap's guitar player is a painter now. He has 11 on the value scale. It's titanium white plus radio active isotopes. He ONLY uses that paint.

I’ve just followed you on instagram, and I wish you advertised these videos better, because it is very instructional….and beautifully relaxing to watch while I do other work…But I’m so impressed by your work…I have posted on my own page about you because I want you to be successful…which I am sure you already are, but everyone should know the quality of your work. Dream like in a Lewis Carrol way… married to … early advertising and …. Classical work like …The birth of Venus

Thank you for the nice comments. I haven't posted a youtube video for over a year, busy with painting deadlines, but I do plan to. Your encouragement makes it more likely.

Wonderful technique and talent. I’ve never seen such detail in a painting and such an extensive under painting. My paintings lack that resolution and fidelity.

Great video mate! Looking forwards to your next one. Your narration is spot on, as smooth as your edges, I wish I could sound similar to that but with my accent, I sound like Dracula.

Thanks Victor. Dracula is very cool though, so that's fine in my books.

This is fantastic. I enjoyed the thoughts about brushwork. What are you using as your reference if anything?
@stevechmilar1215

Extremely delayed reply. Oops. Many models built as references. Sometimes I take up to a month to put everything together before a brush even touches the panel.

Do you mix your stand oil with anything (odourless mineral spirits) to make it a bit runnier?

I have tried Grumbacher Oil painting medium 2. Sparingly. It is thinner and seems to retain the gloss when added to stand oil but is not as glossy as stand oil alone.

My art style is very small details as well so I know what you mean about how brush stokes and loose styles are more common. I have wondered about if my style was too detailed at times to be known as real art or just a recreation of what I see without any personal touches.

No one is sure how to define "real art" so I'm sure small details won't detract from that definition. More so the intent via subject matter and such. Thank you for commenting.
