fun fact about tarot cards, most people make the assumption that they are made to predict the future, however they actually are meant to help the consumer initially draw out their needs in their subconscious, predicting the future is not likely considering our actions and everything around us are constantly changing our outcomes but they do help us look more closely at the true problems that we tend to avoid confronting ourselves, by having cards with very particular meanings the consumer will be the one to put their energy into the cards and ask the cards their questions which only they would know and understand personally, there fore, tarot is actually more related to psychology than it would be to what most consider to be magic

That's the way I think of it, the specific ideas in random order can trigger ideas within ourselves or amplify needs and questions to be addressed

That’s just like therapists! Lol. Therapists don’t have the answers for your problems. They can’t tell you what to do in certain situations. They only help you figure out how to properly address and recognize and reflect on your situations . And help you process how you can move forward.

The first card drawn is the High Priestess, who is handing a key to “Rebecca”- this card is the opening sequence of the reading, and this card is known to be the revealer of secrets. As she dwells between two plains, she is usually depicted between two pillars and the setting lacks this iconography, even though it is referenced quite subtly later on. Fun fact- In the Visconti Tarot, this card holds a striking resemblance to Maria Visconti (a relative of the duke of Milan). She is also seen wearing a tri-papal crown- but oddly enough there is a mix of the Rider-Waite Tarot and Visconti. (I’m rambling, I know but there is a point to this). Now the two pillars that frame the card are black and white (with adorned pomegranates)- Rebecca is seen wearing in female form a White dress (with a pomegranate design), and as male a black suit. She is the duality of the two pillars, or embodies it. As we enter the second card drawn, Justice derives a blade and unbalances a scale. This card does not symbolize justice, but unbalance- and The Fool Intervenes in her decision. I believe that in this case- the fool doesn’t represent a new beginning- Usually the second and third cards drawn represent the persons current state- and the fool states in this case to “look back” In order to find balance Rebecca must understand something she knew. She is depicted wearing loud silhouettes with mismatched patterns because it is inviting her to look back to a child-like time where the Priestess’s answer lies. there is also a "Wizard of Oz" reference- the fool is kind of like the Scarecrow. LOL I'm gonna stop now cause I doubt some will read this and I will crawl back to viewing instead of engaging hehehehehe

Great analysis. I agree with your view of the fool. Just want to add that the fool can also represent listening to your (childlike) intuition, which is needed to balance the swords, which represent the intellect

Female identifying person here! This is a great and complicated question, and I have so much to say because I’m a chatty Kathy….. Ok, I will begin by saying that I definitely believe the original criticism and polarity with which the New Look was received is very relevant today. WWII brought so much change to “woman’s role” and I think that during this time a lot of females experienced a new sense of worth and value. For many females, this was the first time they were able to be more than their body, more than their ability to bear children, more than their domestic skill set. So, being presented with a type of “uniform of femininity” as the war ended felt, for many, reductive and regressive. But as you are well aware the response to strife is historically escapism and grandeur. This is why we wear more make-up and higher heels when there’s a recession, but we won’t get into the economic part of this discussion. So, what does any of this have to do with your question? Well, today we are in a world of intersectional feminism. There are soooooo many approaches to feminism today. We have female-identifying people who believe in taking their bodies for themselves and that dressing sexy is their prerogative, their choice, and nobody else’s business. Conversely, we have female-identifying people who believe that showing off curves and maintaining hypersexuality in dress is perpetuating the male gaze and the idea of desire-ability through a man’s eyes- which benefits the patriarchy. So really, it is at its core, the same controversy. And what I love love love sooooooo much about this collection, and this short film is that the space for both is created. Because really, the masculine and feminine live in all of us- it’s the harmony of both that we must seek out. For this reason- the need for harmony between the masculine and the feminine, I believe that bar suit upgrade is spectacular. The original bar suit gave many women back their femininity, but the upgrade gives us a space to do the opposite and embrace masculinity as well. Fashion mirrors history, and it’s a beautiful example of exactly where we are in the here and now.

So, a personal opinion about the Dior New Look and the velvet smoking jacket and the case of empowerment and disempowerment. Highly subjective, since I was born way past fifties and in USSR of all places. I've always been curvy since my body had started developing. I mimicked my mother's dressing habits and her style is sport casual. I used to be very ashamed of showing off and afraid of that typical masculine attention to my body. I would blame myself for dressing immodestly if anyone paid too much attention to me. So I hid behind sportswear or, when in school, a jacket. It took me years to develop a style that I enjoy (still work in progress, as it should be). I personally need courage to express bold, pronounced femininity. I think it's like an acknowledgment I owe to myself. Something that unapologetically spells the beauty I was born into. So to me that Dior New Look or a corset or a flowing skirt is a joy, actually, and unisex straight jacket is just a way to hide, to deny my body, and now it feels kinda like a betrayal of the things I love about myself and the things I claimed past adolescence. But, as I said, this is my own experience, and I am just one person. It's just a perspective I'd like to share.

@alyssaledesma6655
@alyssaledesma6655 2 года назад
I absolutely love this share! Love your body, love your curves, and embrace the divine feminine that lives within you!! YES! I love to hear it. I love that you reference it is a kind of "betrayal of the things [you] love about [yourself]" because I think that's a very real feeling for so many of us females who have been made to feel ashamed for being born the way we are. Your share really resonated with me because I am a very curvy latina and grew up in living in predominatenly white spaces where my hips and curves were strange and people would make fun of me so I began to resent myself and my body. I remember buying boy pants in fifth grade because nothing in the gir'ls section fit me. But wearing "boy clothes" in the nineties ended up making me very, very insecure about my femininity, but instead of trying to hide myself I tried to shrink myself so I would not have to wear boy clothes anymore. So for me, the bar suit had the opposite impact. I felt like it provided the space to allow masculinity. I think for me, I very much felt like my hips couldn't be hidden no matter what I did- and thats where my shame lied.

This may be my favorite collection, like, ever. I like collections that are inspired by fairly specific things, like a series of paintings or a certain tarot deck. Themes like "water" or "inspiration" are things I think Iris Van Herpen gets away with, but not many other people make it meaningful enough
@BlissFoster

Hi Sarah! Agreed, many designers select very broad points of inspiration because things like “water” can be tied to just about anything. I like this one too :)

If the death card is the right way up it means rebirth and good things, however if it's upside down it means death and bad things to come. It's one of the only cards where death isn't bad when right side up. The back ground and images around the main character are all significant and carry a meaning. It's why people gravitate to certain decks because it's not just the card but the background imaging that carrys a story and meaning to the card and deck. That jacket is amazing. The details are just breathing

Tis I, an androgynous-presenting woman with opinions about the bar jacket. Firstly, I can understand why second wave feminists were mad at the original Dior look. To ME, it feels very much like 'suit... for WOMEN!' in the way that many things feel unnecessarily gendered in design and marketing. It was taking something and bending over backwards to make it as feminine as possible it a way that feels patronising. But from a grander perspective, it was a step towards suiting and 'masculine' styles being reinterpreted for female/feminine bodies. As much as I want to, I cannot fit my chest into a suit jacket designed for a 'man' in a way that's comfortable. The velvet version from this collection really does feel like an upgrade to me. Perhaps not an 'upgrade' but rather a 'reinterpretation' of the bar's original goal. I really do like it. Instead of feeling so jarringly feminine, this new version is more focused on blurring the gendered lines rather than varying one silhouette into two gendered versions (like the og bar). With the overall movement to de-gender fashion and neutralise silhouettes, this feels like the right move from Dior. There is something mischievous and powerful about this jacket but I can't quite pinpoint where that energy comes from. Reminds me of some of Bowie's suiting in The Man who Fell to Earth, but that's besides the point here.

At 15:27, I can't quite tell but there looks to be a snake around the circumference of the bust piece with its tail in its mouth, which is a reference to the ouroboros: this is also symbolic of the cyclic renewal and is seen in many ancient religious artworks.

I think that the Bar jacket of the 1947 collection, and the entire New Look, being defined as anti feminist is the furthest thing from the truth. Dior created his vision of a woman, which was in part based on the women around him, (like his sister, as you said) and his goal was to make a woman poweful out of her femininity, just as Chanel made a woman powerful out of non conformist garçonne shape. The cut of the Bar jacket that Ciuri offered here is once again amazing, and she is really good at reintroducing the classic Dior pieces in almost all of her collections at the house. I don't think you can compare the New Look Bar with Ciuri's masculine Bar as opposits regarding feminism, but rather as an evolution of it, and the different ways that Dior represents that cause, in part also because, in my opinion, Dior is the leading fashion house in feminism, representing so many facets of ways that garment empower woman, and their styles. Ciuri keeps introducing, in the same way as Dior did, faces of who a woman can be.

I read Tarot and so many different cards and items, I simply think: there is no magic in Tarot. If there is magic, it’s the “reading” step. You could pretty much “read” anything else and get the “answer”. But even the “reading” step is something most people could actually do. The reason why it seems magical is basically, hum, I guess, like, “math is hard”. Or, to say, to read Tarot or any type of oracle, the core is to think “it’s correct to think that this means that”. Yes, just simple as this. If you saw a death and you think “this means, hum, death.” Then it means, death. How others symbolize this or that doesn’t matter at all when it’s you being the reader. (Of course not in this case when you are watching a video by Dior because the reading has been made... or it’s still all for you to decide what does everything mean but it will become a whole Tarot course so I am gonna stop here.) And this is what happened during the “improving of intuition”, which, to me, equals “being comfortable and confident about what do I think it means” no matter I saw a death and I think it means birth or rebirth or “ *nothing, end of the conversation* “ (tbh death is pretty much the same with *end* so I personally take death as a sign of *Tarot don’t want to talk anymore* in some context). In this case, reading Tarot is a journey to the readers themselves because they (are going through a path towards) totally accept their “nonsense”: I love and stand for myself even if I am talking (what people *and precious or “a part of” me* could identify as) nonsense, further, I create sense. Pretty much what Rebecca had done. Anyway, divination is always “about” things you haven’t known or haven’t noticed, so if it makes no sense, it makes pretty much sense. Otherwise you would have known it by thinking in your head, or you have known it and got shocked and accepted it. In the other hand, does divination really reveal things we have not known, like prediction, forecast, or gathering someone else’s secret thoughts? Hum, it could do it, as well as can not at all. This depends on your opinion of “what is this world”. Generally it could, but I personally decided to shift to it “can’t” I am gonna use it in other usages, and this actually made life feels easier for me.

I actually got to see some of the earlier tarot pieces by Maria Grazia Chiuri at a temporary Dior exhibit a few years back-- they were stunning then and the addition of a whole tarot collection is amazing. Also, as someone who's trans/non-binary I'm super psyched that the Dior brand is exploring gender in such an upfront way. Making out with my clone still... isn't on the table though lol. A symbol of ultimate self-acceptance, I guess?

I don't like the new bar suit because its just like any suit on the market. It also encourages women to hide their femininity (for me at least). What I liked about the original bar suit was that it looked pretty, practical, and wasn't afraid of what it was.

Bliss, how do you usually find shownotes?
@BlissFoster
@BlissFoster 2 года назад
There’s no one in the way unfortunately. Some brands post them to their websites, and that’s always worth looking for. Sometimes they will post them to their Instagram‘s, but most of the time, it’s just a process of constantly looking and asking people. If there’s a brand that you really love and you want to read the shownotes, comment on their Instagram posts and ask them! If they understand if the public wants to read them, they are more likely to post them.

no, the deck used in the collection film 8:16 is the cheapest mass market reproduction of the deck available (The Golden Tarot by Mary Packard) artificially aged to make it look less cheap (seriously, is like 20 usd, and in the current Tarot World those are pennies. Even the reproduction used in one of the original ads for Chanel "Chance" is better ). however the videos filmed at the museum where MG and the curator are talking about it are the actual cards 8:13. the death card is associated with snakes but not in an extremely obvious way but the death on th Visconti-Sforza doesn't have a snake, the thing in its hand is a bow. and finally the red animal in the moon card is not a lobster, is a crayfish/the crab meant to represent the sign of Cancer

reversed cards aren’t always the opposite of the right side up. i think of it more as the other side of the same coin.

it's a tableau vivant of 3 of the 12 astrological signs. the first figure from left to right is a black torso with two white fishes painted on (Pisces), then there's the woman with her hand in the air meant to represent Aquarius (she has a vase in her hand and the plastic/fabric/whatever is a stand in for water), then there's Cricri in the place blocking the view of whatever was pun in place for Capricorn (unless the woman in black is actually the representation of the sign), and finally the woman in the right is supposed to be a centaur (Sagittarius)

Bliss...you seem to be doing well and I'm impressed! Great subjects with intelligencia.... How about the oversized trend in opposition to the "sustainable" movement? The runways are littered with extra yardage in nearly every house? WTF is up? MGC said, and I quote loosely, "I want Dior to have no voice, just blend in closetwise" Really? Really? CD would dissolve at her "ideas" ! Oops, two subjects one thought. Sorry.

As a trans woman who's often felt like transitioning is shameful due to how masculinity is socially much more respectable than femininity, I generally dislike it when more masculine traits are used to make us seem more powerful as it just plays into those same patriarchal values.

Just because it's a comment that will die on the Internet my little good luck charm is a fake gold pog slammer that I lost in my childhood home at 7 or 8 that I found as we were moving when I was 15. I keep it stuffed in one of those uselessly small pockets in my wallet.

I think Maria is playing with some pretty outdated and simplistic tropes here when it comes to feminism and gender identity. I dislike the whole idea that to "take back her power" she has to give up traditional symbols of femininity. It still plays towards the misogynistic view that the feminine (and by extension, traditionally feminine qualities) are weak and powerful women are anti-feminine. That the only ways to gain power in a patriarchal society is to be more masculine. It's also giving me major "not like the other girls" vibe. It doesn't challenge the patriarchy or its symbols but reaffirms its power and legitimacy at the expense of other women who don't want or cannot be "masculine". I think what also hinders this is there is no exploration of the idea that gender is a spectrum. It cuts back and forth between one stereotype of a girly girl to another stereotype of a tom boy. Both tired and cliche at this point and lacks any kind of further insight, nuance, or originality.
