I have been feeding a raw homemade diet to my two dogs for over 13 years. They are now 15 and almost 15 with zero health issues. I personally do not trust any commercial dog food and I want to have complete control over every ingredient. There are now better quality raw dog foods on the market than when I started, however I still do not trust them. Many of them have extremely high copper levels which I believe can cause liver problems over time. This applies to quality raw foods as well because they often use excessive amounts of organ meats (particularly liver) because the organ meats are discarded often by the human food industry and cheaper. Organs are super foods and critical to the diet, however overdoing organ meats is not healthy IMO. And some of these foods add copper and other supplements on top of them. I encourage everyone to learn how to feed their dogs.
Hi. I have tried many different foods, raw, homemade cooked, raw food companies, like Northwest Naturals. I have not been able to solve my toy poodles skin issues. He's 10 years old now. Where did you start on your journey please.

@lindamikesell6390 I tried to share my journey but my comment was deleted. I think people have the greatest chance of getting to the root cause of food issues is by learning from a qualified nutritionist how to feed a homemade diet correctly. This will allow you to truly isolate the ingredients. This is difficult with commercial foods because they have so many ingredients. For example, a friend of mine discovered that fish oil was a culprit for her dog and this is found in many dog foods. Sometimes what is a healthy ingredient for one dog is problematic for another. I found this to be the case with my dogs.

Thank you for this great info. I found most helpful some recommendations for kibble because I can't feed total whole food. I have a large dog but I do add whole food toppers.

I been feeding fresh for 5 yrs after i lost my dog to cancer i knew i had to make a change moving forward and educate myself into everything my dog is consuming now change to holistic vs conventional ,feeding whole foods organic and is the best decision i ever made my dig is healthy and striving big difference his allergies gone. His 7 yrs old .

AAFCO is only a forum but does not mandate the regulatory standpoint of the Feed or Food grades of the products [sold in the USA market. FDA is the competent authority and makes the necessary implementation of the nature of law enforcement instrument in the form of scope, definitions, controls and standards that mandate the differences between Food-grade and Feed-grade products. There are regulations for Animal Welfare regulations within FDA as in EU. More specifically, Food-grade that are meant for human consumption are maintained at higher standards of hygiene under ISO22000 while the Feed-grade products are also nearly maintained as like products for that are meant for human consumption but delegated for the industry players for cGMP / GAP code of practices. In simple English, products meant for Human consumption are subjected for stringent inspection regimes while the industry players are on their own for some aspects of GMP for feed grade products. These controls look for ppb (Parts Per Billion) of different range of substances like metals, chemicals, plastics and many more.
