Thank you for sharing this knowledge. I gather from your video that making sure thrust forces are balanced is a key aspect of these hybrid turbos. You also say that these are old. Are there new non hybrid t3 turbos that are better? The application I'm building for is an l28et Nissan straight 6, and the exhaust manifold fits a t3 (stock turbo is a t3).

Pleasure- glad you learning from the content. Dont bother with T3 or T4 product - its ancient, poor performing, and everything about them are outdated, heavy and not efficient at all. Choose a performance/race spec product specific for your application, and try stick to Ball Bearing - it will last longer, have no thrust issues, spool faster etc.

Working on a project 4.6l engine v4 , had see a you tube video one a '03 cobra terminator crate engine with twins- T04e-57mm T series hybrid. They took the factory eaton blower off and mounted the twin 57's@ spring psi it was 604hp 666ft torque then @ 14.7psi 830hp they got to about 20 psi which they believe it was reaching the limit either on the hot or cold side and put down 994 hp on 20 psi with twin to4e 57mm turbos. Honestly thats all I ever really wanted. For a street beast 1000hp . with turbos that will work without breaking the bank .
@TurboDirectSA
@TurboDirectSA 2 года назад
Once again - the question is very simple - "in comparison to what?" There are MUCH better options that will spool faster, produce more power at less boost (more reliability), and less heat. The compressor stage is more efficient, and the power curve will be more linear. Lastly at similar money to the antiquated T-series models. Its a no brainer really.

Is that Efficiency? And what is th ideal . Yes ..I keep looking at gtx 3071 gen 2 specs . And try understand what I have , and where I am in relation to its limits . You also mentioned different turbine wheels , with the same housing ,longer exducer and so on. Again I relate to my application.. I am in a 10 cm / at.73 turbine housing . Are there other turbine options for my type application., to improve response? Sorry for the long mail . Regards Doug

I love the information but I have so many questions that I doubt youtube have space lool. Anyhow I now see what you are talking about, I am not a turboexpert nor a mechanic but I still believe trim is a important part. But in terms of housing's and internals can be challenge for example downpipe flanges fit for a factory flange or use Vband set up then there is internal vs external wastegates. To finalise my question what turbo can work for a nissan d22 conversion ( N/A to turbo)
@TurboDirectSA
@TurboDirectSA 4 года назад
Trims are essentially one part of a formula to calculate the size of the turbine and/or compressor wheel. Housings come in various sizes and shapes, some match OEM flanges, others don't - 99% of housings on performance turbos off the shelf (excluding custom made products) will not fit OEM flange faces and will almost always require fabrication to fit the desires application.

@TurboDirectSA
@TurboDirectSA 3 года назад
The most common "diagnosis" is that "your seals are gone" - this is most of the time a mis-diagnosis for an installation that has problems. Look for restricted oil drain, oil drain installation at the incorrect angle, breathers are blocked, oil level too high, blow by in the engine, sump pressure etc.

Stage 3 is 11 blade right? I just bought a t3/t4 50trim. 48ar ball bearing from atp turbo. Says stage3 blade but its 11 blades and more flat on top
@TurboDirectSA
@TurboDirectSA 3 года назад
No - Stage3 in someones books means one thing, and stage3 in another persons books means another thing. We work on inducer and exducer sizes to be accurate - now having said this, as per the video - there are many blade derivatives with the same inducer and exducer dimensions, so what do we label these as??? The video covers the fact that T3/T4 units are in essence a fallacy due to the thousands of variants that exist .... each combination will yield a different result every time. We prefer to understand what it is that our customers want for their specific application and we build it accordingly. This way you get what you expecting in terms of response and power.

If you are looking into purchasing a Genuine Garrett GT3582R turbocharger, im afraid that you will need to decide on something very simple - a flange design. One is small and made in the T3 family, and is single scroll - The other is a larger square flange and twin scroll -called T4, choice is yours depending on what the application is. T3 will spool faster than the T4 - thats pretty much the jist of it.

No not at all -- the shops (specifically locally) are using cheap chinese knock off junk which come from china and are called T3/T4 Trim57 and and and -- the biggest load of rubbish.. Many clients would call us and request a T3/T4 which they heard about or saw advertised locally (in our country) and say that these turbos are great, and make power, and spool fast -- our natural response is "In comparison to what?" When we show the client the difference on dyno graphs and take them for rides in cars with the same family size unit assembled by us or off the shelf form BorgWarner or Garrett, they cannot believe the results.

@@dangerousfandango5943 Firstly im not aware of a Genuine Garrett BALL BEARING T04E 50trim turbocharger. I have been the Garrett master distributor for almost 15years and never seen this turbo or heard of it. One thing i can tell you that was happening in our country was that we used to supply the "turbo guys" locally with parts to build up turbochargers including end housings and all the internal parts - and some unscrupulous companies in South Africa used to purchase these cheap chinese knock off turbos and replace the end housings with Genuine Garrett units, and when the turbos failed, the clients came to us claiming warranties -- you can imagine the mess. Im not saying that this is what happened with you, BUT in order to verify if the turbo is in fact genuine or not - you need to take a pic of the name plate on the turbo, which will relfect 100% identically to the sticker on the box and send this to me - i will get it across to Garrett for you and copy you in on the mail - Garrett will verify whether or not it is in fact genuine or not. Im doubting whether there will be a name plate on the turbo or the box - however if there is - you will have your answer directly from Garrett themselves.

I agree with you that most chinese copies suck. However no matter what you have mentioned about how old and antiquated the T3/T4 family is, T3/T4 with its countless copies and derivatives still rules the market. And they don't exist only bad chinese copies on offer, but excellent quality derivatives and for a very good reason. With a good billet aftermarket wheel, you can get very respectable performance for the price.
@TurboDirectSA
@TurboDirectSA 3 года назад
T3/T4 technology is ancient and performance and reliability cannot come close to the newer bearing system technology of today. There is alot more that goes into a successful turbocharger than a compressor wheel.
@aftastosk6016
@aftastosk6016 3 года назад
@@TurboDirectSA of course this is dated technology and its performance is inferior to a modern design but i cannot agree about the reliability, the good old tried and trusted T3/T04 would had never managed to be so successful and universally copied if it was an un reliable design.
@TurboDirectSA
@TurboDirectSA 3 года назад
@@aftastosk6016 Outdated by more than a decade + >> Reliable?? Which one of the T3/T04 combinations are you referring to as being reliable? As the video shows, there are literally hundreds of options/combinations, and 99% of them are unreliable due to mismatch rotating assemblies. The point on T3/T4 models is simply this - they are old, unreliable and do not perform due to the mismatched combinations being used out there. The builders of these (predominantly the chinese) claim that they make power and spool fast, when in fact these have never been compared to anything (apples with apples) to justify these claims. T3/T4 is as dead as the DOS operating system is.
@aftastosk6016
@aftastosk6016 3 года назад
@@TurboDirectSA The NON chinese T3/T4 is far from dead on the market. Apart from the fact original Garrett T3/T4s are still available and can be easily purchased from the internet in many well established e-shops that I would never think that are cheating (ATP, turbokits, FullRace, just to name a few), NON chinese copies and derivarives of T3/T4s were the backbone of the products of well established companies (like Precision, Turbonetics, just to name a few again) and there are still on offer on the market. So dated yes, but far from finished as a commercial product. Also, T3/T4s of various versions had been used in the past on racing with great success. The fact that they exist horrible chinese knock offs that are totally unreliable does not make the basic design problematic. The fact that some of them are offering weirdo combinations of e.g stage III turbine wheel with 65/91mm wheel that Garrett didn't intended to is not a design fault. Every type of catridge, even a G series, can be the victum of a missmatch, and I don't think that if somebody is going to install a 770 compressor wheel into a G25 is going to be any different than the unreliable T3/T4 combinations. Finally, the issue with the small shops. You know very well that sometimes they do unfortunate things. The conversions of the T25s (or T28s/GT25s etc) with GTX wheels is well known, basically aiming at the Nissan aftermarket - 200SX/Silvia - S13,14,15, 300ZX and skylines - as well as other weirdo combinations of e.g. GT2876 converted with a GTX wheel...it's not the fault of the basic design of Garrett, neither the newer ones or the older ones like the T3s, that these combinations can potentially be proven disastrous. So in my final answer is THE COMBINATIONS THAT ARE INSIDE THE DESIGNED PARAMETERS THAT THE SERIOUS MANUFACTURERS AND WORKSHOPS SHOULD KNOW. And if someone has installed a genuine T3/T4 and uses it inside its limits (which are much lower than these of a G35) the turbocharger is RELIABLE.
