I was asked to shed light on the meanings behind Vegvísir, Ægishjálmr, and the Valknut. I hope this video clarifies the history behind these symbols, while not being too confusing to understand!

Vegvisir is a modern creation. It's first appearance came 800 years after the Viking age. The Huld manuscript also holds many sigils that bear striking resemblance to Solomon Sigils.

I would have advised being careful with the Ægishjalmr and Vegvisir. Whereas the vegvisir is not in the slightest from the viking period, at least Ægishjalmr is mentioned a couple times in the prose edda. However, there's no real evidence of what it looked like during the time the symbol was written of, and it was written past the viking age, after the christianization of the North. That being said, it's mentioned in our most well known book (the prose Edda, which despite being written during Christianity's influence, is still written with the mindset of the viking age and therefore is a great source regardless), but there's also no proof that it was used by the vikings themselves, or even known to them. But of course, since it's mentioned in the prose Edda, I think it's fair to say it is a viking symbol nonetheless, regardless the vikings themselves used it or not.

Greetings from the land of fire and ice, I like your interpitation of Vegvísir and Ægishjálmur 🙏 Vin sínum skal maður vinur vera, þeim og þess vin. En óvinar síns skyli engi maður vinar vinur vera. Veistu ef þú vin átt, þann er þú vel trúir, og vilt þú af honum gott geta, geði skaltu við þann blanda og gjöfum skipta, fara að finna oft. Ef þú átt annan, þann er þú illa trúir, Viltu af honum þó gott geta, fagurt skaltu við þann mæla en flátt hyggja og gjalda lausung við lygi.

I've always believed that a symbol means what you want it to mean. No one can say with complete certainty what any of these old symbols mean. Just like now they could have meant different things to different people depending on when and where they were used. There's far too many self-proclaimed experts that attempt to tell us about the old faith that really have no idea what they are talking about imo. I think you made valid points on the subject. Good video! 😊

the annoying thing about these staves is that the texts rarely explain how to use it. in some they are extremely specific, things like "carve it in willow wood using a bone from an ox under the full moon and wear it tied in your troat after eating cheese". But mostly are just "carry it with you". How? in wood? in paper? tattoo? what do I use to make it? what to carve it? what are te side effects? it is difficult to understand

Love to listen to you. BUT! When you talk about Norse you might be a bit confused if you think that´s the same as the Norns. Wich is the 3 goddess's Urd, Skuld, and Verdandi. Wich is sitting at the foot of Ygdrasil. They spin threads that affecting all. Urd stands for your faith and death, Skuld stands for everyone´s future. And Verdandi stands for one´s present life. But this is what I read. If you know more please make a vlog about them and/or Yggdrasil. Love to listen to. My best regards to you

Recommend Jackson Crawford and Arith Härger. Also, Keltoi (another youtuber) has talked a lot about Hel as the place after life. A couple books talking about it is The Vikikg Spirit and the Eddas. However, the prose edda tends to think of Hel as the Christians hell, whereas in reality, the vikings didn't see it that way. Hel was just the place you go in the afterlife, without the flames and burning death. I imagine it something like Freyjas field.

So, after looking at several different symbols for my next tattoo, I decided on the vegvisir. It serves as a reminder to me that I would get through the initial struggle of life without alcohol, and continues to remind me that I will get to where I want to be in this journey. Is there a way to read the wayshower though, for use of finding your way around the world, or something similar? Or is it just an intricate symbol with no practical purpose, other than being pretty?

The symbol itself isn't necessarily used for the practical purpose of finding your way around, it's more in that it has the ability to help guide you safely in a spiritual/metaphysical sense. (For lack of a better word at the moment) Hope this helps!

Ah, I see. Yes, that helped alot. I had heard of the symbol a few times, being a resident in one of the ex-viking countries where we do have the occational nordic mythology believers. Good thing I didn't go deep in the woods with one on a paper, and expected to find my way out I suppose xD

Is the nortic compass the same as the helm of awe?
@NashNoLastName
@NashNoLastName 4 года назад
They are both different. Vegvisir is the compass stave while Aegishjalmur is known as the helm of awe. They have a similar composition, but the stave modifiers are different giving them different purposes.

I agree with the opinion that your own belief and intent is what gives something power. That is where the magic lies.

If you have the time could you google chris hemsworth back tattoo from extraction? Is this entirely different from vigvisir or is it a hollywood screw up? Thanks for the video.

Just looked it up and while it seems to be based loosely on Vegvisir, it appears to be a unique creation for the movie.

@@NashNoLastName can people make unique "staves"....not sure if thats the right word. Or is nordic/pagan culture too specific?
@NashNoLastName
@NashNoLastName 3 года назад
@@trevorhackney4990 oh definitely, but it's a learning process. There are some great galdr masters today who create their own staves and galdrstafir. So its totally do able, just requires a lot of study to learn the proper ways of doing it. I know I'm still far from being an expert on the topic.
