I got the Turbo Switch Grip installed in my gear a couple weeks ago. i really like it. If I need a different ball, switch out the thumb and keep going. No more not wanting to use a ball because the thumb doesn't feel right that night.

Coming from the perspective of someone who has both used and installed Switch Grip, Vise IT and Grip Loc, here is my opinion on the products. Grip Loc and Switch Grips are both the easiest to install, being that they are only one piece apart from the slug. The Switch Grip annihilates Grip Loc in durability and longevity. The Vise IT has more pieces involved in installation, but it is still incredibly simple. Switch Grip and Vise IT as your best choices in my opinion, but I feel like I've gotten the best feel from the Vise IT.

I'm excited about having switch grips in ball. I use to use vise grips interchangeable thumb slugs but I don't like the way the ball works with the its system. I prefer turbo grip switch grips and that's what I need in my ball

is this smoother on the inside, right now my instructor gave me tape, and it works good, but sometimes the back of my thumb starts rubbing on the course tape irritating it. I would like to move too the Turbo grip, but I know some of the pro shops was thinking going this route was overkill since I don't bowl with a lot of balls.

Hi Mike! The Switch Grip system is great, no matter how many bowling balls you own. It would actually be beneficial for you and the situation you are in now. When we bowl, the thumb hole may feel great for a couple games but as we continue to bowl, the thumb may swell which can cause the irritation. If you have the Switch Grip system installed, you can have possibly 2 different slugs that are two different sizes. One that would be your go-to when you start to bowl, and another that may be drilled slightly larger to accommodate your swollen or irritate thumb. You may still need to use tape to help with your grip.

Concerning your response to Pomanjo, I'm confused. I thought the outer sleeve was 1-1/2" (which is what you state in your video) and the inner sleeve is 1-3/8". If that's correct, then if I want to buy a pre-drilled thumb slug do I buy an 1-1/4". Please feel free to correct and advise me. Thanks.
@bowlingballcom
@bowlingballcom 5 лет назад
Hi Mark! To clear up any confusion- Turbo makes TWO different sized INNER sleeves. They make 1 3/8 AND 1 1/4. They will both fit inside the same outer sleeve. It would just vary on what size you needed for your slug :)

Best review and video I have seen on this. Thank you so much. I'm still debating but was told they might break if my track is near thumb hole. Thoughts? Also though I'm working on improving my release so that my track is no longer near thumb hole but it's a work in progress.
@bowlingballcom
@bowlingballcom 8 лет назад
Thanks for watching, Miguel! As long as the outer hole that the Outer Sleeve for the Switch Grip is installed in to is beveled fairly well, you should have no issues with cracking.

What are the general prices for installing switch grips?? For example, the cost of the outer sleeve and the inner sleeve per ball.

Hello! This can vary from shop to shop. The general price range of the products themselves (without installation fees) is $14.99-$16.99 on bowlingball.com

1. My problem with the turbo switch grips is sometimes the sleeves shrink slightly, probably due to ball shrinkage thru aging. Then you cannot get the thumb slug in. 2. Also the nubs on the bottom of the thumb slug will wear and you run the risk of the thumb slug falling out when the ball hits the pins. I have lost two thumb slugs this way. Only thing to do then is to place a piece of scotch or electrical tape on the slug to tighten it up. 3. One more problem is sometimes you cannot get the slug out. Then you have to buy a special tool to remove it. This can also be corrected by slightly filing the edge of the slug nubs; however, then you might run into problem 2.

My inner sleeve fell out of the ball into the pit once, never to be found. Anyone getting this product should have at least one backup inner sleeve, just in case that happens.

Just a question to switch grip users, is it normal to feel a little bit of movement to the grip?
@bowlingballcom
@bowlingballcom 8 лет назад
From time to time. Depending on the weather, cores can swell or shrink. One trick to tighten up the inner sleeve is to get some very small rubber bands (like what are used for braces) and put one around the bottom of the inner. You want to put it in between the slug part and the locking mechanism part. This will get rid of any play in the slug.

Can a pro shop make an existing thumb hole that has a thumb slug in it bigger and put a switch grip in it or does the hole need to be plugged first

If I have an outer sleeve size of 1 3/8" , what size of an inner sleeve do I need for an insert? I don't want to drill on a slug insert. Is there a predrilled switch grip inner sleeve insert that I can buy like the one you showed first on this video ( purple color).
@bowlingballcom
@bowlingballcom 6 лет назад
Hello! All of the outer sleeve for the Switch Grip system are 1 3/8. The size of the inner sleeve depends on the size of your thumb :) Most thumb slugs come undrilled.

I tried Vice's IT system a couple years ago on three of my balls. I chose that over Turbo's Switch Grip because Vice's inner slugs rotate one full revolution before locking into place. One night during league it failed while delivering the ball onto the lane. The slug remained on my thumb as the ball rolled down the lane. Scared the crap out of me cause I could've severely injured myself. I've heard similar stories with both Vice and Turbo's systems. After my scary experience, I switched back to regular slugs.
@bowlingballcom
@bowlingballcom 8 лет назад
+Brian Daniels Wow, that is scary. All of us here use Switch Grip and we haven't had anything like this happen. We've heard stories about Chris Barnes having the IT system come loose while bowling, but if installed properly, these should be very rare occurrences.
@TheMrFrontera
@TheMrFrontera 8 лет назад
I've heard a lot of stories like that about the IT's. I originally started with a single IT to try it and hated it. Guy couldn't install it correctly for crap. It was so hard to take in and out. Switched to turbo switch grip (different shop) and love it. So easy to take in and out and haven't had any problems with it. For someone like me who's always had thumb problems, i love being able to have the same feel across all my balls. If my thumb starts swelling i've got a second insert i could use

@WalkingE
@WalkingE 8 лет назад
Do they make lefthanded versions of these? If not, I would imagine that lefties would accidentally unscrew their thumbs all the time while delivering the ball.
@bowlingballcom
@bowlingballcom 8 лет назад
No, there is only one model. It's a really great product and believe it or not, it's not an issue for lefties. The locking mechanism locks just enough to keep this from happening during the swing.

I know this isn't the place but i'm stuck in bowling and I don't know what to do. I average 227,225,220(in an extremely terrible house). I'm broke so I can't afford a new ball or to go to a tournament. I'm a power tweener trying to get to the next level. Is there anything I can do or can afford that can help? This is the only place I know someone will see my concern. I keep losing interest in bowling because it just costs too much to get anywhere.

Find a local tournament man. They're usually about $20 for the local center ones and usually have decent prize money. Our center just had a tournament over the memorial day weekend. $20 entry, 1st place got 300, 2nd got i think 200, and then everything after that was like 80 or less but still thats some money towards a new ball. And if you win those then step up to the next tourneys. Although the next tourneys will usually be on a sport shot pattern and avg 220+ on a house shot is really good, its a totally different game on a sport shot pattern

@LargestBowlingNut
@LargestBowlingNut 8 лет назад
Hey Tony, I am also a Turbo Switch Grip user here. One really disappointing experience for me is that even though I know this system is really good, this outer sleeve almost always creates a "line" crack that will eventually extend outwards or a "spiderweb" crack around the outer sleeve area, so I was wondering if I can ask you a few questions Do you think this is an installation error? Have you noticed this happening more on 14lbs balls vs 15lbs balls? (wondering if 15s are more durable than 14s) And have you noticed this happening more often on a certain brand of bowling balls or are they about the same?
@bowlingballcom
@bowlingballcom 8 лет назад
+LargestBowlingNut Usually this is caused because the outer hole isn't beveled or because excess glue has been used. Here are guidelines that Turbo states must be followed: The 1 1/2" outer hole should be lightly cut at 45 degrees and sanded with a bevel sander. No glue should be touching the coverstock of the ball, only the filler material/core. The router bit must be used to ensure a uniform hole.

There are times that the core will swell making it tough to get in and out. Head over to bowlingball.com and search for Switch-a-Roo. This is a product designed to help turn the slug in these situations. If the slug is turning but you can't pull it up, there's a tool called The Jack.
