I’m a newbie to 3D printers, going on six weeks. I’m finding it’s difficult to get help from a forum due to my lack of proper terms and phases. You videos seem to adapt to my leave of knowledge ( or lack of knowledge) to easily walk through each step. After my 4 week of small disasters on a dozen prints nothing seemed to work. My first fear was entering the world of Cura until I watched your video. Now after several successful prints I’m actually enjoying this new hobby. Really, thank you, keep the faith One Layer At A Time.
I'm glad you found the channel! Every year at Christmas, a lot of people get their first 3D printer and turn to the online groups for help. Most of them get nothing but harassment instead of help. At last someone giving clear and concise relevant information,one topic at a time. If like me you are crazy busy all the time then this type of content at this length is perfect to get me from “ just get the thing printed” to next step forward in the cura learning curve. You have come up with the perfect format to teach this stuff. Ultimtimaker should employ you to make a full series starting in order at the first settings heading and working down the list as they appear on the drop-down menu this would take the learning time down to weeks instead of forever or “I will get to that some day “. This is truly awesome and so rare in these days of massive information overload. Thank you very much for the time and effort you have spent on this. If you were to make a series I for one would be happy to pay per episode. I look forward to any other videos you will be posting.

Do you think it would be possible to show the settings in bamboo studio? Sometimes some of the terms are not the same between both slicers enjoyed the video very much give me a lot to think about.
In regards to Ironing, I actually found best results with FAST ironing. I iron at 110mm/s, 25% flow, 0.25mm Inset, 10% overlap, and .02 line spacing.. (on my AnyCubic Vyper). It's quick and my top surface is as smooth as a baby's bottom.
I don't do a lot of ironing, but I will have to give those settings a go! IF it works out, maybe I'll use it more often! Thanks for the tip and thanks for watching!
I am going to set my top and bottom layers to 1.28 .. your logic checks out with what I have seen with other prints and the top layers having holes in it.
thank you for informing me about Monotonic Order......I've been wanting the printer to do this forever - top surfaces around holes always have that weird striping because it skips the sections and goes back later.
Oh, BTW, I just Subscribed (I'm always forgetting to do that) to your channel because being an old buggar myself (and nost likely needing a haircut too) you speak my language...and with patience. ALSO...for those out there using Orca Slicer you'll find the 'Monotonic Ordering' located under 'Strength'/ 'Top/bottom shells'/ and inside the 'pattern' multi-choice settings...HTH.

Funny you say that because I was just having a conversation about that the other day, because when I was young, I always thought I'd be nearly bald by the time I was on the leeward side of 30-something, but I'm now pushing almost 70yo and I still have a (almost) full head of hair like you...life is a funny thing. I know you kinda concentrate on Cura most of the time but all of your pointers are definitely valuable, even if I have to 'translate' some of it over to Orca and Simplify3D for my usage...keep up the good work!
@@gordonrain7152 Thanks! Just a few minutes ago I was left a comment "Nice wig". I guess you can't be older with a full head of hair and a bad haircut! I started off with a lot Cura videos and have been trying to add some Orca and Creality Print as well.
Well done video presented in an organized manner. Kuddos. I don't use ironing in my prints as I just love the look of a nice top layer. My trouble has been getting rid of those drag marks running diagnally against the grain, GRRR. I'll try your tips on monotonic and "not in skin" combing. Thanks
Same here. I prefer the look of the lines. Ironing is nice, but you're still going to see the layer lines on the vertical surfaces anyways. I'm sure there will a project someday when I'll need ironing again. Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for this!! I have been watching a lot of videos and i had still been getting top layers that looked... off. The advice i got was "under extrusion" but it was only on the top layer so it was weird, but my top/bottom settings were very thin, and that's what's been causing my issues all along! Very simple, helpful video! I will be suscribing and bingewatching everything i can lol

Thank you very much for teaching us this practical tutorial The reason why the object is misprinted is because of not using Curera's advanced options. Many options should be set according to the type of shape and we ignore it We would be happy if you could explain more about the other options of Cura for better printing. get better Thank you for your efforts, great master🙏🙏🙏🙏

do you think you should use concentric or lines for prints like a helmet? there are certain parts of the helmet that I am not sure will look more cohesive if they are concentric or with monotonic lines 😵💫 edit: Also, what do you think about using ironing on a helmet print?
Hello there. Very informative video, it helped a lot. I am very new to 3d-printing and still figuring it out. I am printing a testcube over an over again to get the best results. Everything looks fine by now but the bottom layer still has fine lines visible. Is there anything i can do to make the bottom layer as smooth as the top layer? Thanks!
Lines in the bottom layer are one of two things. The print bed might be slightly out of level. The worse the lines look, the more the bed is out of level. It could be a warp in the bed. The other could be the print bed material. I use glass on a lot of my printers and the bottom surface always looks better than the top since there is no texture on the glass. When you start a print, watch the first layer go down. If you're seeing gaps or blobs in your first layer, check the bed leveling. If it goes down fine, I would look at the print bed material. Hello I really like the way you and you do not talk a mile a minute so it's east to follow when you explain things. They are clear and easy to understand. I have a BIG request though you use Creality Ender printers and that's fine except for us who use Creality CR6-SE and CR6 Max where some of the required instructions cannot be preformed. It would be fantastic if you could videos that cover the same topics that reflect these printers. I have issues I can not seem to fix with the extruder and hot end that you solve in videos for the CR Series series.
I'll try to my best! I went with the Ender 3 since a lot of people got those around Christmas time and were struggling with them. I had one that was completely stock, still in the box. I'll see what I can do about working other printers into the series.
Hi Bill! Thank you for your amazing content. You've literally saved me from giving up on 3D printing. Quick question: Is Ultimaker Cura free / open sourced? My printer came with software which seems to use Cura in the background, so I would rather just use Cura directly. Edit: typos.
Yes! Absolutely a free download and is open source. I’m not sure what slicer you currently have. Some brands, like Creality ship with a stripped down version of Cura. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
I honestly don't know. I've never run voxelmaker before. But monotonic ordering is becoming more and more popular among different slicers, it might be there under a different command name. Sorry I'm not able to help on this one.
agreed with all you said (especially ironing) but I use CHEP profiles and he has most of the settings you talked about done (great minds think alike) :).....I did find that my Mono bottom layer was not checked so thank for that
In Bambu Studio, Click on the Strength tab. It's under Top/Bottom Shells. Look for Top Surface Pattern and/or Bottom Surface Pattern. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching!!!
I wish I could specify the layers I want to Iron from the slicer. I tried manually changing the gcode, but I got confused and didn't dare to run that code.
Everything you said worked for PLA... but PETG has been a problem for me and nothing seems to work except adding a ridiculous amount of toplayers. Strangely, the slower I print the toplayer, the worse it looks. It's almost as if the heat needed for printing PETG negatively impacts the toplayer quality when printing too long and slow on a small area.
My top layers seem to be amazing, but my bottom layers are horrific. I've got them set up the same in terms of size and number etc... Been pulling my hair out trying to figure out what's going wrong. Also having major stringing all of a sudden.
The bottom layers could be as simple as the bed not being level or oil from your your hands getting on the print bed when removing the previous print. For the stringing, I would run a temperature tower, then do a flow cube and finish up by printing a retraction tower to dial it n your settings. I have videos for each of those items on my channel.
