Underwater Drone PowerVision PowerRay 4K ROV Review - [In-Depth ROUGH OCEAN TEST, Pros & Cons] 

Wow, that journey mimicked my first outing with my own Powerray. It was a choppy and turbulent in South West Australia and the battery life dropped quicker than I thought. It’s a brilliant piece of engineering and durable too. Agreed, stability is non-existent in rougher waters. AND full credit to your assistant with her tether handling. I purchased a cheap garden hose reel spool and modified it to unravel the cord and wind in as the drone returned closer to me. Many thanks for your honest video commentary.

Great vid Dustin, +1 to the auto-color balance thing. thats incredible annoying, one moment fish is blue next moment they are color corrected.. This thing really need a 3 axis gimbal.or at the very least 2 axis to give stabilized video.

Great video Dustin..its what i wanted to see when i clicked on the video thumbnail when i read the title, as you could have avoided posting the video due to the rough sea along the coast line but you chose to post it and show the product and its abilities for what it is. The pro's and con's of the product can be clearly seen within the video and that's why i keep coming back to your channel..! . As you pointed out as to the stability of the unit, is 100% correct and perhaps an upgraded version with a 4 motor configuration would obviously solve that issue. Personally i would mount a mesh protector on the outside of the vertical motor as that would have prevented any piece of coral or rock from jamming the motor. All in all, my view, the unit performed well under these conditions and perhaps if the 4 motor configuration was there it would would have been a perfect afternoon rov flight. Seriously looking forward to the night time review ...!

I'm thinking there wasn't a "stability issue"...you were never deep enough to get below the swells...it was the tether frequently/constantly pulling on the craft (esp when you were going out to sea)...there should be a lot of slack.

I think Makena drops off to deep water a little quicker... the camera is great and so is your assistant but man that thing porpoises 🐬 like crazy, I got a little light headed just watching, thanks again for the excellent videos💯💚🍀🐬🤮🚁🍄🍹👍

Air drone or water drone first? Any recommendations would be appreciated

Too young to pilot one of these for sure, but i wouldn't mind getting one and go out with my dad, would be fun to swim next to this while hes piloting it and go deeper for some cool shots. I wonder how far it can go, the future is gonna be very interesting if they keep developing these and making them better, and more stable. Not to mention fine tune the controls and bring in new ways to move it around like doing a 360° turn in ALL directions. But the way it is now is pretty good, especially in these rough conditions in the water. I would test this mostly in the pool or in rivers, would have a really clear water and see how well it performs in those places too.

It's great how your son n daughter help you with the videos with no complaints at all. Good kids. That rough ocean was a good test. Question: why don't you go off the grass side instead of the rocks?

What if the cable gets stuck around some coral or debris? Does it need the cable? Is there a “ go home feature “ like the DJI phantom?

Maybe try and use the PowerRay to retrieve your lost DJI Mavic Pro? Murky waters will test the lights and visibility.

that was great a real world test of what to expect when you launch from shore, that bottom prop is really exposed im suprised there isnt any mesh guarding it, im excited to see what it will be like in the evening darkness with the blue light and what it attracts. it dont well not to get too beat up in those waves. great review and its a thumbs up from me

They should have split the screen for the sonar so you get live view and sonar view

The white balance shift was definitely noticeable, both in the onboard video and the tablet recorded video. Seems to have problems with stability in turbulent water. I'm surprised you don't own some kind of water craft to paddle out there a ways to test these things out. I have 2-3 inflatable 2-3 men rafts in my garage (years ago, before they screwed up my access to the beach at the end of the street, I used to carry them down to the lake and paddle/row a few miles a couple times a week .. can't remember the last time I used them though). You'd probably need something with an outrigger to keep it a little stable in that water. Interesting to see the fish species ... none of those in Lake Erie for sure. Thanks for the review. Cheers.

No function for gimbal stabilization? Would sort out most of that turbulence in no time, or at least the roll and pitch!

I especially liked your 3 videos on this drone & I ordered 1 from amazon $999 for PowerRay wizard. Received it a few days ago. Still doing bench testing & familiarization. Very well made "DJI quality or better". No cable real system a problem so I ordered a $14 150 Ft 16 gauge wire reel on E-bay . Seen other videos on cable reels & that's what people are using. The Wifi cable adaptor module can be mounted on the side of the reel so the reel can auto unwind while he ROV travels away from shore while your wifi is connected to remote & IPhone. This ROV may not be the best but for the price you can't beat it.. From my research the " QYSEA FIFISH V6 " looks like the upcoming economical best, estimated at $1800. But it may not be on the market for a couple months & may need a few months for the bugs to be worked out.

You got real lucky in that you did not burn up a motor with that coral in the vertical motor. Power Vision now has a screen got he bottom of the vertical thruster, but I added a couple of aire ties to hold it on even more securely than the plastic clips I don't think the tether is made to lfit the drone, especially in the surf, I use a gaff to hook the drone behind either drive motor to lift in onto my boat. Also I made a reel out of a cord reel from Home Depot for under 10 bucks. I drilled into the center hub and have the base station mounted on a hub adaptor made our on a 1 1/4 PVC coupler reduced to 3/4 inch, It takes ner 2 minutes to rewind all 7 meters of cable. I'll post it as soon I learn how to do the you tube stuff.

The conditions were a little extreme for the Power Ray's capabilities seemingly. Looks like it will be better in still waters. Stability is, as you say, an issue but it survived the experience. I suspect that later versions will need quad or hex stabilisation for full control but even then the turbulence you were operating in would be challenging Interesting video as have been all the series on submersibles so far. I look forward to the next one

Why none of these subs have independent camera controls like DJI drones? Would really help capturing smoother footage. Turning the entire sub to be able to focus at different locations kinda makes this not worth buying. They could encapsulate the camera inside a dome type enclosure. Nice video by the way, very informative.

wow an htc m8, haha i owned that phone for 4 years.

How deep can it go, does the cables have adapters for other cables so it can go a mile or more? What happens if the cable comes loose, does it have a computerized return to the beginning spot mode or something? Also would like to see one with a powerful metal detector, I could become a treasure hunter and wouldn't have to go down unless something is detected, not a mile of course. Would also like to see it equipped with night vision, not infrared, infrared sucks big time..

The conditions were super tough and it kind of made the drone look terrible in comparison to the last ones you tested. Could you please launch it off a boat in deeper water.... it just never looked like it would do great in choppy water, however it seems to have a bit of speed and great little gadgets. Looking forward to seeing it in open water.

But with a so lon cable i love my Dji Phantom 4 and mavic Air no cable lol but okay the time will come this thing here is pretty cool for underwater already maybe one day we get dive drones without cable who can dive 80 to 90 meters for the same money would be great.

I used it for inspecting under ground tanks, But few months back, it has become non-functional. If some body helps to get it functional I'll be very grateful.

good review, but ,, really , that test is not a good indicator ,,, its rough , and I think anything would respond that way, I live on a canal system in sw Florida and it works great,,, I would think that your ocean there is a little rough for a small rov like that

There's a lot of work to be done on this before it can realistically compete with more expensive underwater solutions. As it is, it's really just a fancy toy and not suitable for serious underwater photography. The stabilisation issue is a big deal breaker as is the tethering. I can see that getting easily wrapped around underwater obstacles and becoming damaged on abrasive coral.
