I remember coming across this movie while watching TV at my Grandparents house. I was immediately drawn in and eventually found a DVD copy, which I still own today. This new 4K release is also part of my collection now.
I didn’t like it as much as the first. One of those personal preference things. I do enjoy David Hayter, as I grew up playing MGS. I even have a couple signed items. I just enjoy the cheesiness of the first Guyver movie more.
Really glad The Guyver got a 4K release, especially if it means being closer to a 4K release of the sequel, The Guyver 2: Dark Hero, which has much better action, tone, story lore, set pieces, and much less eye-rolling comic relief.
Since you loved this, I’d like to give a recommendation to set of 3 Kamen Rider films done in Japan in the 90’s. There’s a lot similar vibes with the practical effects and monster designs. Shin Kamen Rider: Prologue Kamen Rider ZO Kamen Rider J It’s getting a Blu-ray set from Media Blasters, and can be pre-ordered from their site.
This movie is a staple of my childhood lol being a child of the 80’s, I have the arrow video blu ray release and I got this release, cannot believe I got this movie in 4K!
Glad you liked the release! I’m really proud of the extras I worked on (particularly the SMG & SW commentary I moderated). Enjoy the booklet if you get a chance to read it. If you want to know more about the making of both films, I’ve also written a 400 page book called “Budget Biomorphs: The Making of The Guyver Films”. 👍🏻
I remember watching this on TV as a kid. I believe right around the time the sequel was coming out, this aired on USA or Syfy or something. I was in my early teens, so I had to have been around the time the sequel came out. The only time I've ever seen it. I instantly loved it.
I went to a Jeffrey Combs film festival last week at my local theater. Jeff was there doing Q and A and signing stuff, it was awesome. They had a table with movies and this was on there, days before its actual release. Like 20 bucks less than it’s going for online too. Picked it up, forget Combs is in it for a brief moment, playing Dr. East, a nod to Herbert West.
Dude. If you just enjoyed this A LITTLE... Dark Hero knocks it out of the park. I think you'd dig it, for sure! But UF put out a hell of a release with this one.
People who watch this Guyver or Guyver 2 Dark Hero needed to watch Kamen Rider Shin or Kamen Rider ZO. They were filmed in Japan before The Guyver were put into production in America. I highly recommend you guys to check these two movies out.
That edition is rated R, but it was edited down to PG-13 when it was shown in the theaters. What’s crazy is there are three cuts: theatrical, director’s cut, and the “uncut” version on the new 4K.
Loved this cut of the movie but still prefer the original theatrical cut. I grew up with in the early 90s as it didn’t have a lot of the funny music effects 7 to 8 minutes in the movie that kinda made it look like a made for TV series. Also the cut I was used to did not have the Description or talking dialogue at the beginning, it just started off chasing the doctor, they caught him, killed him, and the credits rolled, also don’t want to be a buzz killer for a lot of the people that like the second one but visually I get what they mean, story wise I thought it was pretty boring, tried to sit through it more than once Was not as captivating as the first one.
I seen this on U.K video when it was called Mutronics tue movie and loved it. The sequel Guyver dark hero starring solid snake David hayter is a lot gorier and very cool. There was also a great Guyver series on manga video
Guyver Dark Hero has better fighting and a darker tone but the movie lacks any personality and the cast short of the protagonist is largely forgettable. I also remember it being way too long
You should review Guyver Dark Hero, I refuse to watch this movie because I've heard nothing but terrible things, ranging from terrible characters and racist stereotypes (fucking alien with massive lips tht feels like that damn spongebob gangster robot in transformers 2). Apparently the director hated it too, and felt it hardly reflected what he wanted it to be when compared to the manga and anime. Apparently Dark Hero is more mature and far better, but I'd love to hear someone's thoughts on it, seems hardly anyone talks about it. It has more gore and more accurate characters
You can blame New Line Cinema or whoever distributed the film, they didn’t know whether to give it a tone similar to Batman or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, hence why it’s a mixed bag.
It's a bad movie on so many levels but very nice to look at. The monster you're referring to also raps. Guyver: Dark Hero (aka 2) is a noticeable improvement for the story and better nails the tone of the old anime. Hopefully it will see a 4K release soonish.
