Seven years ago when I was 63 I was laid off from the industry that I had worked in since 1970. Since then I have not been able to find a job in my field or for anything near what I had earned. It's looking like I was lucky to be able to work until I was 63. Discrimination is something you don't understand until it happens to you. I really understand what Elizabeth has gone through. I am angry, but there is nothing I can do.

As stated earlier Elizabeth Diane White is brilliant and courageous. We can all learn from her. She is a positive catalyst for change. She has started a discussion long overdo. She has thrown open secrecy 's and shame' s doors. People are no longer hiding and closeted. People now realize they are not alone. It takes insight and courage to work to change your circumstances. Her efforts have resulted in the publishing of a wonderful book and helping others experiencing similar circumstances. Yes, she lives in a lovely home she bought with her hard earned money! Yes, she is well educated, she studied and succeeded. Yes, because of a failing market she had to close her business! Happy to learn her circumstances are now changing. I applaud her for not sitting around crying in her soup and becoming actively engaged, doing something about it. I learned years ago "MEDIOCRITY ALWAYS ATTACKS EXCELLENCE." Bravo, Elizabeth Diane White! Keep soaring! When others go low, continue to go high!

This is happening all over to everyone. The Financial crash of 2008 took away most people's 401k and savings. Most of us will not ever be able to retire. I saw this coming years ago so I started downsizing my life and living as a minimalist. We don't need all the "shyt" that we have because at the end of the day we cannot take it with us in the afterlife. I am getting rid of other "stuff" that I don't need.

Kindred spirit! I am 34 and graduated into a down economy almost a decade ago. Couldn't find a job in my field, so I've been doing low paying temp jobs for years. My field has somewhat recovered and I am finally starting to get interviews for permanent positions. Even though I am a decade "behind", I am so glad I learned to live (happily) on very, very little. I will land a permanent position at some point and so my income will increase but without a shadow of a doubt my spending will not. I am a minimalist for life. I still would've been in the fog and living beyond my means if I hadn't had this very harsh life lesson so it was a blessing.

This was helpful to me. Sometimes we fake while we have jobs, making it appear that we can afford a certain lifestyle. Maybe that's partly where it begins. There is nothing wrong with living within one's means. I certainly sleep better at night when I do.

Elizabeth White is obviously a very intelligent and talented woman. However, I noticed she mentioned not wanting certain jobs (ie, Research Assistant) because the pay is so low. She even described her adjunct professor job as paying "peanuts." I understand that those jobs pay nothing compared to working at World Bank. And yes, she has her Harvard MBA, etc. But I think this attitude is what gets people in a lot of trouble. They're so accustomed to making a certain amount and living a certain lifestyle, that they turn their noses up at low paying jobs. Often they won't take anything that they view as beneath them until they're already so far behind on bills that it's nearly impossible to catch up. I know it's a humbling experience, but some times you have to suck it up and take what you can just to keep the lights on and food on the table.

Reading some of the comments here breaks my heart. One of my uncle (also my dad's best friend) suicide, hanged himself in a park, left a sorrow letter to his wife and two children due to exactly the same situation. It is easy to judge others. When you spend decades build up a career, sustained a certain social status and living standard, and then lost them all. It is the lost of self identity, the 'faking it' part that kills, not so much the job lost itself. Judgement and lack of compassion is what keeps people like my uncle to 'fake it' resulting in even deeper depression and suicide. Ms. White has the courage to tell the truth. So before judging, think again.

Cecilia L Your observations are a breath of fresh air. Lack of compassion is a primary criteria of narcissistic personality disorder. Perhaps the trauma of dashed hopes will help us all 'find our tribe', and future. Wouldn't it be wonderful to wake up one day to a community of caring, spiritual, empathetic, intelligent and hard working fellow sojourners? What a huge missing element and 'elephant in the room' !

The lesson here is to save your money and find something within yourself to help others. It’s not about YOU ever that’s the key with these gifts we have. Invest in a passion or something to help a million people and she is doing it with this BOOK. 9 to 5 is definitely not for everyone. We do not look to the future when young. We live in the (NOW) while we’re vibrant, and healthy buying new CARS, THINGS, STUFF & more STUFF; until all the toys begin to look funny and not so exciting. It’s life and it happens to many. Stuff will have you in a RUTT. Should be called 25, 35, 45, 55 & Living a Lie. All the ages do it. You get older REALITY kicks in and the doors are not opening any more. She’s a Writer, Speaker, a Teacher, a Creator, shaping lives for others to think about where they are going into this lifestyle they are living. Those degrees she’s gotten are kicking in. They help you think more creatively when your backs up against a BRICK. I will get this book. Thank you. REAL TALK

This rings too true for me....my partner, since deceased, lost his job at 54 and less than two years later, he was dead, perhaps because of the stress associated with the oft-experienced story of Elizabeth White. This discarding of older, experienced employees, the lack of loyalty in the corporate world, as well as corporate greed, has driven people over the edge. It's appalling, it's disgraceful and it's the current MO in Corporate America (and I dare say, has been for years). I wish her well.

I'm almost half her age, but I know the struggle is so real. Many people looking at applications and resumes are 20 something idiots. I've usually thrown people off bc I look years younger than I am. The sad thing is that statistics show time and again that older employees are more dependable than younger ones. I don't know how many times, as a manager, I encountered a lazy, useless, younger(18-20s) employee. I just can't say that about older employees. They're generally more respectful, punctual, and learn just as fast. Sadly the ones doing the hiring are too young know or care about this.

I hear you. This is where starting a small home business comes in. It has been a life saver for me. With less than 500.00, I learned to sew, started sewing and selling tote bags and teach sewing to others for a fee. I also buy cheap and resell small home furnishings online (Ebay). A neighbor of mine learned to bake and sells her pastries weekly, giving her an extra 1500.00 a month. She has no actual physical shop. We must also remember to go out and make connections. Whether that is a community center, a church or attending a workshop. You will find some ideas will come to you doing this.

Oh my god, I find myself in this very same situation. I am 53 years old and I was once middle class able to totally take care of myself. However, I lost my job in 2013 due to an illness and I have not worked full time since then. I'd even moved to a different state in an attempt to jump start my career. It's now been seven years and the hardest part of this difficult period in my life is how much it has broken my self esteem. I have to use both food stamps, food pantries and charities to feed myself and pay my rent. All of my friends are aware of my problems but I've kind of lost connections with them because their lives have moved on in other directions that includes financial stability. All of my past resources have dried up and even the ones who I am still able to access have moved on to other things. I'm totally lost.

This really points out how someone is valued when they are younger, and cast off as 'worthless' as they age. My place of employment is ushering out most of the executive management that is older and replacing them with younger people. Its an obvious change... literally almost overnight. I came over here from a PBS video that piqued my interest in Elizabeth. I will say though aging is easier and less stark when you have "nothing". I need to read her book.

Angel I'm sure Ms. White has had a difficult time, but its also suspicious that a woman with her education and professional background would be unable to find gainful employment in her industry. So, I am going to call partial bullshit. I think Ms. White may be expecting too high of a salary considering her time out of the industry, maybe expecting too much responsibility. She could be expecting skills that were relevant 10 years ago to pay as much today. And considering her condo, it simply doesn't make sense to keep that home if the financial situation is so fragile. So, while I definitely empathize, I also want to know what Ms. White is expecting for employment, how she's presenting her failed business to prospective employers, and whether she has savings tied up in investments, property, or auctionable assets like art.

Caramel Spice True, but it's not always the case. There is always a catch 22. People keep saying your young, I also have trouble finding good high paying jobs. Specially where I live, it's all minimum wage jobs. If it is 9-10h an hour or so that hardly pays the bill. I was able to find something that currently pays for my bills but that is not enough when you live by yourself. I've been wanting to be able to go to school and have a job. The career I would love to do would be impossible it's medical it's full time. I would have to drop my full time job to focus on it. I'm personally not fond of debt. I'm already 10k in debt which might not seem a lot but it is for me. My bills keep going up but my income stays the same. I already cut back on a lot for years. Right now I'm focusing on working on my online business and seen if I can take that as a full time. While working 9-12h a day at my current job. I have grey hair from stress and same with my peers being so over stress working up to 2-3 jobs just to keep up with this rat race.

Elizabeth White is a borne teacher. With her degrees and vast life experiences, it would seem that somehow she could get a job teaching on the university level, somewhere, somehow. If not her alma mater Harvard, how about lesser institutions such as University of Guam or University of Saipan, or somewhere in Kansas? She is a teaching treasure. If all else fails, there is a huge demand in metropolitan areas for substitute teachers which I did successfully for a while and managed to keep my head above water.

Totally agree, I was thinking the samething. Although she didn't say it, I get the impression that she didn't save nearly as much as she should have working a six figure income for as long as she did. I learned the hard way to save and yes play it safe and stay put. I'm too old to take chances like that. I go from the known to the unknown now. I need to live to fight another day and not do the reverse.

This is something i as a 29 yo worry about constantly. Like stability seems to become more and more fragile. Even for those who are budget wizards. Like its insane how fickle a good living has become. I'm starting to see why kids these days dont see much hope in a career and would prefer to be famous or make it big n rich. Their parents literally lived in books and school till their mid 30s and are still check to check struggling to pay bills kids are on free lunch plans and all. Smdh its a sick sad world

Let her story be a lesson for others. She made the follow mistakes that many made: -She made six figures for years but spent it all and never saved a dime -She relies solely on her job for support instead of investing in other streams of income -Relied on her fancy "education" but did not realize that most employers don't care when you get older you become a liability for a company.

I was young during that dreadful day in September of 2001 and I was downsized twice in twelve months. I started tempting, could not get back into the corporate workforce. Then 2008, was working but under employed, once again downsized but now I'm in my mid forties. Long story short, it's 2022, I'm underemployed but I've done the math. I can actually stay where I am for at least 16 to 18 years if I'm healthy enough. It has excellent health benefits, thank God, the pay is low for nyc but high for the midwest. What's my strategy now? Save, just save, stay healthy, plan ahead for emergencies which i can and just pray. My biggest issue is, can I actually do this job that is soul crushing, intellectually stunted, and I'm one of two with multiple degrees for that length of time? I think I can if my ego doesn't get into the way. I'm grateful that I'm in my current position considering there's thousands if not millions that are not only in a worse situation but many will never recover. I have luxury problems and I'm grateful to God.

Extremely interesting and useful! I would just add that this is the feminine dimension of what seems to be a wider, deeper, issue which is age, both for women and men. A male account would be interesting so to compare the two paths and how toguether they complete the puzzle of age, relevancy and employment. Thank you for sharing. I'm a very youthful looking 57 year old. People often don't believe me when I tell them my age. There was a year that I was unemployed in 2012, but I'm currently employed. I've gone on a few job interviews where I've gone to the expense of renting a car to get to the interview. The interviews seem to go well. However, even if they're NOT extending an offer to you,YOU'D THINK they'd have the courtesy to inform you that they've selected someone else OR they're still looking via an e-mail, text, anything. YOU DON'T HEAR FROM THEM AGAIN. Is it me or was there not a time when that would be considered rude -- and possibly unacceptable ??

Why in the world do people think life is like a guarantee? It sure isn't and it is time people who are here in the USA realize that. We are not raised to think we all must make our own way, not work for it, but someone else must give us what we want. That is called entitlement. We must learn to live on what we make, not what we want to make. Been married for 46 yrs. Hubby was a coal miner, we never owned a new house and only a few new cars. Most of our cars were second/third/fourth hand. We never thought anyone owed us anything, we must work for what we wanted from our life. If you don't want to lose what you have, then don't owe for it. It all boils down to supply and demand, the supply will become more if less people demand what is in supply. Live within your means, save at least 10% of your net income. It isn't what you make, it is what you save. I don't mean to buy stocks, but save, save, save. Don't go in debt for anything unless you can pay it off when the due date comes. all of this is Just My Opinion

So, she was a financial consultant for companies, earned big money, but when she put her money where her mouth is, she flunked miserably. It's not cool that she went through that but it's really difficult to feel any sympathy for her. Sounds more like she suffered a case of arrogantitis. Age descrimination aside, if I were a CEO of a big company, I honestly wouldn't hire her either after that, as a consultant. Also, she rotates over and over again through the same lame story "poor me, I had to fake normal when I blew all of my money to shit, including my retirement savings+ took out another mortgage on my home trying to sell African decorations in all 5 of my stores which there probably was no reason to open up that many in the first place but I said fuck it anyway because my degrees got my back". On a more positive note, I'm glad she has enough courage though, to share her story, that's never easy.

could have, should have is the luxury of hindsight. Ms White tried to pursue the American Dream right? And she did not know that 2008 was going to happen. She has said many times that she could have chosen differently. Interestingly , lots of white men make reckless, stupid choices in business and yet are bailed out or applauded for being daring. What we need is a more compassion and a clearer understanding of how global capital and economics are skewed to create many of these casualties. And you have NO RIGHT to intervene in a friendship between Ms White and her friend. It has nothing to do with you.

I say pompous !!! And not humble. And entitled. Don't let the afro fool you. All that education, maybe working in the community with the youth or seniors can help her refocus. To much education can spoil the soul. Why would you go to a restaurant you cannot afford a glass of wine, and you know you can't truly afford to split the bill. Kill your ego and allow the real gifts to come into your life. This woman waved and talked about those degrees as if they had an organic value cos those degrees will not keep you warm at night. Very sad! Another woman at the end of her journey with worthless paperwork. My grandmother had seven children and was a widow at 45, with a high school education. My grandmother cleaned homes part time after my grandfather passed and worked at a Head Start program in her 70s, She was able to leave a home in California to her heirs. And a 30+ acre farm in New Mexico, her heirs only being responsible for the taxes on the property.. So many women of White's generation have been mislead to believe education and careers were far more important than families. Selfish baby boomers still think it's all about them. My goodness volunteer at a historically black women's college. Rebuild your soul.

Denise G I would never invest my entire life into a career. Your family, church and community are the true investments that pay real dividends. Rich or poor everybody takes a fall and has a need to readjust their lives. After the age of 50 you ARE supposed to adjust your life. By the time you hit 62 there should be no second mortgage on your home it should be paid off or payments are reflecting when you purchased your home 20 years ago. You don't bet the farm in a business venture that could go south. She gambled and lost. That's not ageism it's poor planning. This woman does not mention children or a husband that she had to sacrifice for and missed out on gaps of her career or life. This is the path that she chose. Accept it! Do you people think that you are competitive with a thirty year old? You are not! Youth is exciting, innocence is exciting that pompous attitude is not exciting. Unfortunately, people have been told intelligence and education are extremely important, and then your career is important, all b.s.. You say this is about ageism and we should stick to that subject and not judge. No, you want to make it about ageism. And not live in reality that when you get old you have less opportunity. If you're an old lion on the Serengeti you have less opportunity. Baby boomers, your chickens are coming home to roost. My real investment was my family. True Love! without it you are an empty vessel begging to be filled up. My mother has 10 grandchildren, when my niece was 5 years old, my mother had just given her a bath, My niece told my mother, "grandma, when you're old I'm going to bath you and put lotion on you and you'll never be alone". That is the investment. Baby boomers like this woman have been mislead. Just to sum it up, she's just not humble. She's entitled.

Denise G "we've been cast off and left for dead". Yes, Denise, you have been cast off. Cos you were a slave to society. There is no need for you anymore. There are new, better, faster models. That's just the reality. A corporate structure doesn't care about your feelings.

I'm sorry. This is the second time I have tried to listen to this lady's story and I just cannot get into it. I will summarise it: rich lady with a pampered well paying job thinks too highly of herself and envisions owning a chain store of overpriced African art and trinkets. She over extends herself bc she likes the idea of having a store in a few States and being admired as 'somebody'. It flunks and she goes bankrupt. Then she expects to re-enter the workplace at $200,000 a year. Then she expects to get paid an astronomical amount as a consultant. Reality hits and former rich woman has to live like the rest of us. In her hustle though (working out her multiple streams of income) she writes a book about the whole thing (leaving out her greed, and over inflated ego that got her in this mess) and sells it all to you mugs. End of story.

This lady became educated worked for someone else for years then decided to start her own business. How is that dumb to start a business that provided jobs for others? No one knows if their business is going to be a hit or miss. You go into it thinking it is going to make it. She enjoyed African art and trinkets and took a chance. Her back up plan was having credentials to get back in the game. If she didn't have degrees the first thing everyone would say you need to go back to school. Her story is a lesson to everyone it doesn't matter your education or how much money you make you need to save past your retirement and watch your splurging. She could have been fired as so many have been at a certain age and be in the same situation. There aren't any guarantees in life. She has an opportunity to inspire others to take off the mask and watch on the splurges.
