I'm sharing my experience as a postgraduate that is unemployed. Youth unemployment in South Africa is rife, graduates end up working in sectors that are not aligned with their qualification as it us so hard to break into the labour market in the country. Stay motivated, look for part time and stay positive.

Christina’s created a great platform for this conversation. The fact that it’s this popular is a serious signal of a problem in South Africa. @Grandma’s Knees, I suggest that you find what you love and get super good at it. Then find a way to start as early as possible. If you’re willing to hustle and once you’re good at a tangible skill, you’re at a good starting point to get yourself in an environment with opportunities

I can totally relate to your video, I also did my BA Sociology and International Relations at Wits. Was unemployed for 3 years and decided to go back and do my PGCE. Luckily NSFAS funded both my undergrad and PGCE, later that year I got the Fundza Lushaka bursary. I've been teaching for 5 years and I love it. All the best with everything, keep pushing those doors and when it's time God will open one for you❤

Hey Sis Letty, did you do your PGCE because you figured it'll increase your chances of employment in the teaching space? I've heard of people studying it because of that reason and PGCE getting canceled at certain universities because of it. Thanks
@lettymonnahela8967
@lettymonnahela8967 3 года назад
To be honest I did do my PGCE because I wasn't getting any job, never mind an interview but I enjoy teaching so much I can't imagine doing anything else. Yes some universities are cancelling it because people do it to get employment business don't do much for the learners, and as a result learners are not doing so well. So if you decide to do, do something that you'll enjoy teaching and do best by the learners...

The government should emphasize the topic of choosing the right field to high school students. There’s a lot of factors that contribute to unemployment. I for one got extremely good marks in high school, I wanted to be in the medical field, I couldn’t because I went to a high school that was 5th quantile. Mind you, that I come from a working class family with a single mom. When I got into varsity, I was forced to take a course that wasn’t of my interested. I’m still studying bachelor of social science with an A in physics and a B in Maths. Another thing. You can’t only major with psychology if you aren’t gonna practice as a psychologist. To be qualified as a psychologist, you should have a degree, an honors degree, a masters, and write a national test which requires you to have 70% on the dot, nothing less. If you only have an undergraduate degree, you are considered only a matriculant.
@Nomfundo222
@Nomfundo222 3 года назад
Treasure Tshabalala hey. People from quantile one up to three are students from townships & rural areas (fall under working class). From quantile 4 upwards it means that you can afford to pay for your own fees, therefore go to college. It only applies in certain universities, & for sure all medical colleges. & sorry for getting back to you so late.

Generations before us where born into an economy where it was sufficient to work hard, get a job after uni and have the ability to buy a home in your 20's. But our generation, we where born into a subcontractor economy where you have to struggle to get piece jobs (even with your Whole Honours degree) and EVEN THEN you won't get the same security as those before us because the employment we get provides minimum wage and only benefits the CEO'S. That's why you see such a large majority of the youth moving back home. I'm not gonna lie guys, I'm scared of what's going to happen in the future. I'm in second year at WITS doing a BA in psychology and philosophy. I honestly don't know if our generation will get the chance to buy our own homes and invest money for our kids or even have enough food to eat in the future. South Africa and it's corruption is a scary. What if we end up like Zimbabwe? Our government has BEEN hiding things from us. Misusing funds and resources and now people are dying from this pandemic and what has the ANC said? Dololo. Sooo....

Since December 2019-July 2020, I didn't want to talk about this. The unemployed post graduate chapter was one that came with constant anxiety attacks, self doubt, depression, physical illness and and a lot of uncertainty. I actually lost touch with myself in the process. My dreams and aspirations started to fade. I broke down, died spirituality....the list of toxic events is endless. Things got so bad that I started attending life Coaching sessions. The most important lesson I had was that of dealing with rejection( Can't tell you how many rejections I got!!!! 😭😭😭)....but you need to learn to deal with it in a healthy manner and live in hope that what's meant for you will come. What was mine came recently😭😭😭🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 . It wasn't easy getting to this point but it did. Your time will come too. My last words are that you stay positive, talk about the situation, keep busy with other things, refuse to let unemployment define your life, make social capital work for you , put yourself out there regardless of the fears , consider relocating, get out your comfort zone and most importantly start small and work your way up. All the best of luck ❤️

Hey Christina🙂. So, I'm in my final year of majoring in psychology and sociology at UJ (funded by Nsfas). This is actually my biggest fear: not being able to find employment after graduating. Its been really hard looking for funding and trying to find possible alternatives like internships for Psychology undergraduates. Its just stressful for me because I can't afford to go back home either. The only hope I have at this point is getting accepted into honors and a step closer to obtaining my masters and, finally, becoming a clinical psychologist. I just wanted to thank you for this video because I can resonate with your story in ways that I can't relate to anyone I know. Nonetheless, I hope you find a sustainable job in what you actually majored in. Keep your head up and don't give up on your dreams Best regards Nandipha 🧡

Young people in South Africa need to start realising that the system in place is not necessarily for us, consider 12 years school then a further 3-5 years only to struggle to find work is ridiculous. I was the first person in my family to go to uni and had a full ride but law was not the one and dropped out and felt like a failure for awhile, also that was my first taste of failure. I fell into a job and built a career in the financial services industry, I run my own thing now. Find a way to build your skillset and quantify your time and offer the services to the market whether it be mental health and wellness or research related and put yourself out there, you become your business then take on employees when your are ready to upscale and become an entrepreneur. I thought I was doing pretty well for myself and since listening to some of Vusi Thembekwayo's master class and video clips it has made me realise that there is still work to be done and I cannot rely on government to achieve my goals. You can create a LinkedIn account and connect to Justice Mazula, building networks is important

have you considered making videos about demographics and the sociology of South Africa? you seem to be in a particularly good position to explore this given your background. not to mention that you could explore the effects of demographics in south africa to you having to leave your home province and move to south africa. i know that isn't what you asked for in the comments, but video essays exploring social issues is thing i like to watch and there is a definite absence of that kind of content for south africa and i really would like to see it tbh.

The struggle is real, trust me I understand. I graduated in 2018 and was unemployed for the whole of last year, in October I got a job at the local library (the pay was wayyyy lower than the minimum wage --- cause I worked as an epwp) I stayed there for 4 months and decided to do my honours degree in marketing (that's what I'm currently doing in 2020) Lessons learnt: -Failing to plan is planning to fail. - Your first Job doesn't have to be directly linked to what you studied. -it's important to get a student job (if possible) just to show recruiters/ companies that you have at least tried something either than "theory". Another thing that I have been busy with is assisting my friend with her two businesses (basically working as an intern, and what I love about working with her is that we're busy creating our own business structures and learning as we go)--- so I'm definitely very grateful for this opportunity. Thank you for your video hey, you just reminded me to continue being proactive and staying optimistic. I hope You find employment soon. **Another thing I was told by one of my professors is to send CVs out during Aug cause that's the time companies recruit for the following year.**

Thank you so very much for sharing. I'll be praying for you sis, bophelo ke ntwa and we're all feeling the pinch but go tlo loka. Your story is legit the African child's story. I studied up to MSc in Nuerogenetics and now again I'm applying for undergrad number 3 because of no work. My best friend committed suicide last year after being unemployed for 7 years, with an Hons in plant biotech she worked at 2 call centres to support her children and ultimately it got too much. Don't give up Mtase, we must keep on pushing.

I honestly think you should 100% go in the entrepreneurial direction. Try find mentors, although it’s a bit tough rn coz of COVID, but really look into it and really try. You have nothing to lose. It’s going to be very hard but why not. That’s just my 2 cents.

I remember the overwhelming cloud of depression that came over me as I walked the graduation stage. Everyone was celebrating and I felt so alone in my struggle. I was 5 years deep in looking for employment. 2 years after that I finally got employed. I still have ptsd and anxiety. Everyday I drive into work and it feels surreal. It seems like a dream that I can just wake up from anytime.

So I was minding my own business when I got a notification from RU-vid recommending your video. I wasn’t gonna watch (coz I mostly watch couples and music reactions 🙈) but then I saw the title and it felt authentic. I’m sorry about what you are currently going through. You did well by paying your rent ahead, stay in Joburg and keep hustling and applying. It will pay off. Remember Moshe also started his RU-vid videos speaking about his unemployment struggles, relationship struggles etc, lol oh and at some point he also worked at a call centre by the way. Those videos got him his breakthrough. I have subscribed to your channel hopefully that will help. I wish you all the best.

Hey Christina, i'm glad i stumble on to your channel. I was also in the same situation as you, i studied Public Relations and Advertising, so i have 2 qualifications under my name however finding a job is still very difficult. I got a job at this company that has nothing to do with what i studied for and i have worked for them for 2 years now, I'm currently laid off due to the pandemic. With the time that i have on my hands whilst waiting, I'm pushing my RU-vid channel and small clothing boutique. In essence I'm saying lets keep pushing, something will definitely come up, its especially difficult during this time but we have to just push and pray for a door to open. All the best, i love how honest you are❤❤ And i subscribed!!!🙌🏽🙌🏽

Great topic you bring up and great initiative you have taken in setting up an account with content that many people can relate to. Unemployment is an especially relevant matter given the economic health of the country and prospects thereof. Best I can say is, many will not get formal jobs and the emphasis ought to be, "what can I do with my skills set in the interim while I search for a formal job which might never materialize". Best of luck to everyone.

Hi Christina, Thanks for this video, quite a surprise that RU-vid recommended it I can say i can relate to your situation as im also an Unemployed Grad, finished my In-service Training last year June (2019) started applying for Jobs since then, it's been no response even for the posts i qualify for no matter how corresponding my CV is to the advertised position. it gets frustrating and stressful as you end up not knowing what to do to get better results, self-esteem drops etc We go through alot as Unemployed youngsters, but one thing i have noticed is, the best short at getting an offer is through your actual network as in actual people you know in the industry, as when something comes up, they can recommend you especially for junior positions, i know alot of people who got the offers even when their papers were below the stipulated requirements. and sometimes it's just a matter of time and patience and not losing hope while we keep pushing. Good Bless You, Looking forward to exploring more of your content 😉

Thank you for posting your experience going through this. Times like this are tough but keep your head up. For your masters please look at NRF funding and also the human science research council. Also look into becoming a tutor which can lead you to being employed as a junior lecturer. Your biggest help will come from the University you studied at and academic relationship you formed with your lectures/supervisors. But don't give up anything that's worth having is worth fighting for. And honestly don't settle. You're going to make it ❤️
@leratomaleka7333
@leratomaleka7333 3 года назад
Also find out student programs such as student assistants, research assistant positions at your university. That can help pay for your university studies and accommodation. It's tough because what works is when you "know someone that knows someone". Even if u must force relationships do so. The university and your department should have helped you look for funding. The supervisor they allocated you could have helped you outsource funding. I don't know why some people are lectures hey!!! But don't give up

sweetie pie...have been there i know what you talking about. Tips: 1. stop calling yourself an "unemployed graduate" instead say you are a researcher or data analyst. By doing this you speak things into existence.."sounds stupid but it works" trust me. resilient and that is a good trait for an entrepreneur...think about how you can use your knowledge to earn money...eg. youtube channel is a start, teach people the stuff you learnt at school.

I'm glad that you mentioned the "government" posts, I really don't understand why they like hard copies so much. After my graduation last year, I saw a government post so I applied "through an email" that was there in the post. Few days later, I received an email saying that I must never use that email address for employment matters🤷‍♂️... I didn't understand, because the email was there, it's though😒. When you go for corporate posts, sometimes you're told you're over-qualified or under-experienced and sometimes they don't even respond...

I can relate after 4 years of study I only get call center interviews. And it's the 4th year of unemployment. You go through many phases of depression then acceptance, depression again. It's an emotional roller coster. And the funny thing is those who didn't go to varsity get jobs fast😢.

Good to hear from you. I think in the current economy it is very though ito catering for all grads that are hitting the job market. I feel more and more that one should get in a mindset of starting ur own business than working for a boss. Then again for that one need Capital...i graduated way back in 2006, and i would think that today economy is though on grads

@Christina nothing is for nothing sis, your hard work and will to carry on is your best trait right now and I can't emphasize this enough "good companies" need just that from fresh grads... Not this 5 years experience bull for an entry level job. A practical tip: be proactive on these professional websites, connect with recruiters, headhunters, career coaches, and sometimes even manaers/CEOs/founders of potential employers, etc. Apply excessively and pray without ceasing, all the best to you and every other graduate /unemployed person that needs to hear this (myself included).
