Unfortunate End Of The Road For This 1979 Lincoln Continental Town Car Survivor Junkyard Find

It had been a month or so since I had visited this one junkyard and since then they got another classic in. A shame this 1979 Lincoln Continental Town Car was sent to the yard as it pretty much a survivor. The only damage to the exterior when it arrived was the deteriorated vinyl top. The dents seen now were caused by thr front end loader. The interior was well preserved as well with only a few minor flaws. The odometer was reading around 10k which had probably rolled over to 110k. The underside was as nice as the top with no rust issues at all aside from some light surface rust here and there. Unfortunately I could not open the trunk but I suspect it was equally as nice. All in all this one looked to have a lot of life in her still but alas its the end of the road.

Very sad, I owned 2 of these in the past, a 78 town car and a 79 collector series. I wish I still owned them. In my humble opinion, these cars were stately, majestic and I was always so proud to own such beautiful cars. I always felt like a celebrity arriving anywhere in these cars and they caused alot of head turning back in the day.

Good video my friend that car could been saved the 400:V8 was the only engine available in 1979 in California but it was an option on Lincoln’s outside California but most had the underpowered 400 v8 most people just went with the 400 but it wasn’t a great engine the 460 is better engine for that car in fact it will bolt right up too the C6 that they use with the 400 .the cam timing was sow retarded on the 460. For emissions.install double roller timing gear from 1970 are 71 which brings the cam straight up install dual exhaust and that 460 really wakes up as ford never change the cam in those engines from the early 1970 s,just lowered the compression and redesigned the heads .👍✌🏿
@googleusergp

You could not get the 460 V8 in a passenger car in 1979, 1978 was the last year for it. The 460 V8 would see only truck duty after 1978.

0:50 It was considered prestigious to have things custom built and to have a badge with initials or an engraved nameplate would indicate that the car was something special. So luxury car dealers with good customer service would attach these to cars. Just an inexpensive token to build loyalty for repeat sales or service business,.

Whoa Nelley, 1979 and out of time. Those are the initials of the first owner. I want to say you could have done that through Ford. No, not a Cartier edition---most if not all of the clocks on Lincolns back then had the Cartier name on them. Many designers worked with Ford (Pucci, Givenchy, Bill Blass, etc.) to make their cars seem more "upscale". We got the VIN, we win: 9 for 1979 model year, Y for Wixom, MI assembly, 82 for four door Continental Town Car, S for 400 V8 with two barrel, and the rest is the production sequence. The Wixom, MI plant operated from 1957 to 2007 and produced over 6 million vehicles during the time it operated. We got the tag, we can brag: 52 for Light Champagne exterior paint, 53B for Lincoln Continental four-door Town Car, 22 for Dallas, TX sales district, VU for full Light Champagne vinyl top, 37U for Light Champagne moldings, JU for Light Champagne velour interior trim, A for factory AC, B for 2.47:1 rear axle ratio, non-locking, U for C-6 automatic transmission and production was on Thursday January 25, 1979. Correct, 1978 is the last year for the 460 V8 for passenger car use. The 400 V8 was the top engine in 1979 and it was a sloppy, slow heap of an engine with the two barrel Motorcraft (aka Motorcrap) carburetor. Whoa Nelley, painted tan and ready for the trash can. Paint code 52 and it's over for you. That's it, time to quit. C-6 hit the bricks. Made in MI and going bye-bye. Going to be flat and that's that. FOMOCO is a no go. Motorcraft needs a life raft. Going to get squished and only a few here, perhaps Benny, but nope, not the Google Man are going to be pissed.

@@danh2134 Maybe, maybe not. It might have been in a garage or in a driveway and the owner stopped driving it or passed away and the family just got rid of it. Happens often enough. When you have to clean out a loved ones house, there's plenty to go through and the cars are often dealt with last or whatever is the easiest way to deal with them. I've helped out with cleaning a few loved ones houses over the years and it's a daunting task at times. You have to triage the items you're going through. We did them in this order: 1) Whoever wants an item can take it or work it out if two people want it, 2) Donate what no one wants and maybe isn't saleable, but still has use for someone, 3) sell off whatever is viable and can bring money into the estate and pay taxes, utility bills, closing costs, etc.) 4) Toss/recycle what doesn't meet numbers 1, 2, or 3. That's what we did, and it seemed to work well, but it was still a lot of work. Someone has to lead the charge and someone has to put up the items for sale, take photos, monitor sales, meet with buyers, collect the money and deposit it in the bank, etc.

@googleusergp
@googleusergp 11 месяцев назад
No, that's not correct. "A letter is NOT always better". It varies year-to-year and that "letter is a POSI" should NEVER be used to determine if it's a posi. In this case, it's a "B" and that's for a 2.47:1 non-locking rear end. You have to consult an OEM reference guide each year on a case-by-case basis to determine what was originally installed and after close to 50 years "out in the wild", things could have been swapped out.
@P_RO_
@P_RO_ 11 месяцев назад
@@googleusergp Not too many 9" rears got swapped out in non-muscle-type cars as they neither wear out or break. The usual is to find junkyard cars with no rear or with the posi chunk already gone. IIRC the last ones were in 83 1/2 builds (84 model year). Also worth looking for the raised "N" on the casting which signifies a stronger nodular iron.

@@googleusergp I'm sure it's nice, but at 185 or so HP, it's around half of what the 400 was just a few years earlier, because it had to be. I'm not a fan of the M series Ford engines, but they do have their enthusiasts. I've driven a few of them, including a 400 in a '79 Bronco that wasn't quick by any means, but no worse than the '78 400 Blazer I had at the time. Nothing was fast back then, and everything got pretty lousy mileage. The 400M was prone to detonation, so you did have to use premium fuel in it.
@googleusergp
@googleusergp 11 месяцев назад
@@mattfarahsmillionmilelexus Um, no. LOL. The 1979 W72 had 220 HP on paper and was more like 250-260 when tested by NHRA back then. It's plenty fast, getting the car 0-60 in 7.5 seconds, better than anything in its price class and even cars that cost more than it did. The later W72 400 engines were actually more HP than the 455 V8 that they replaced AND earlier 400 engines. The 403 Olds had the 185 HP you reference, not the 400. The Chevrolet small block 400 you reference in a 1978 Blazer is in no way related to any Pontiac 400 V8 in a Firebird or other Pontiac. The Ford 400 V8 was an emission engine and a notoriously bad and sloppy one at that. It had poor carburetion, poor fuel control, poor emission control, poor power, poor economy, and above all, poor reliability. They were problematic from the get-go.

To be honest, this isn't a big loss. While Ford kept the body and chassis of this generation Town Car, the changes for '78 brought in the Malaise era and cheap interior. The best Town Cars of this generation are the '70-77s. With the 460, minimal emission controls, and the much nicer dashboard with the rotating drum speedometer that goes up to 130 mph. For 1978 the 460 was gone and emission controls galore choked that 400 down to something slower than a slug, but the interior to me is just pathetic. About a half step above a Fairmont or Grenada. Cheap plastic and a garbage 85 mph speedometer mandated by the govt.
