As Mick himself says they don’t want to strike but they’ve been left with no other option as the government is refusing to negotiate. Reducing safety critical works is criminal when it’s just to save money for increased profits. I’ve been trackside on a live railway, it’s very dangerous work and broadly terrifying. The maintenance workers deserve every penny they’re asking for. I can also foresee a general strike, if the government won’t negotiate with the unions then what options remain?

@mattaddison1910
@mattaddison1910 Год назад
The government has already succeeded at getting rid of guards on many rail networks in the UK. Interesting thing, the trains still have facilities and equipment for guards, they were designed with a guard in mind, yet it is Driver Only Operated. This puts additional burden on the driver who has no clue what's happening onboard his train.

@@Trevor_Austin 1. Staff visibility inside of the train leading to a decrease in anti social behaviour, also making passengers feel safer. 2. Able to respond to violent or medical emergencies quickly, unlike the driver, who upon receiving an alarm, has to drive to the next station, notify control and signaller, then respond to the incident, all of it costing precious minutes. 3. Able to deter ticketless travel and by extension the presence of belligerent individuals who dodge fares and use trains without guards freely. They are responsible for an ungodly amount of violence and vandalism on trains. We're talking drug addicts, mental people, elements of society who don't pay for tickets. A guard will eject them from the train. 4. Gives customer info, advice, announcements on route and disruption. A driver focusing on driving will have limited info or capability to make regular announcements onboard. 5. Under extreme situations where train needs evacuating, the guard will facilitate this process alongside the driver, making the process safer and easier to manage. Train evacuations happen a lot more often than you may think, and the driver alone has limited ability to do it alone quickly while keeping all passengers onboard safe.

The Tories sold off the family silver. For example, the BBC was forced to sell off ALL their Transmitters for a pittance to an American Company who sold it on and has been sold and sold again each time at a huge profit. Now owned by Arqiva. How much the BBC pays to Arqiva for broadcasting is not known but it will be a huge amount, a large part of the licence fee that could be used to make more programmes. The BBC is no longer a broadcaster as it doesn't actually own it’s broadcasting transmitters but merely pays a private company to do the broadcasting. It would be interesting to find out how much the BBC pays to Arqiva... Also those transmitters are now making a huge incomes from other users who use the mast for other services like mobile phones. This example has been repeated over and over again in many other services...Even the NHS has seen profitable bits hived off to the private sectors. As with railway rolling stock - sold off to 'ROSCOS' - a cartel that rents the stock to service operating companies. Basically it was a grab for money perpetrated by the Tory Governments, which has been going on since Thatchers era.

Mick is doing his job description 100%. The workers pay their monthly fee to the union and the union battles for their members when required to do so. Latter is what Mick was asked to do re ballot of 88% and is exactly what he is doing. Mick earns his salary every penny of it. Mick will not be bought and is a very articulate clever working class man. Mick is honest has great intergrity a breath of fresh air. What a battle the workers are facing all the powers that be against them but battle they will to enable a standard that allows workers to earn a living for oneself and family. Workers make the profit but see none of it. Gravely sad 2022 workers have to battle to live.

Mick Lynch is in many ways not just an ordinary person he is quite an extraordinary person . His arguments are articulate , to the point and factual , he doesn't dodge questions , he will challenge those in the media who push the pro tory line of the unions are bad and he doesn't get flustered or riled . Along with his deputy Eddie Dempster , the CWU Dave Prowse et al they are fighting not just for a decent living wage but working conditions for all those people who actually keep the country running and generate honest wealth . Also to protect our basic working rights (and human rights ) as this corrupt tory government erode them to suit their rich and powerful family , friends and donors. I disagree with Mick and others regarding brexit , as it is proving (as predicted) to make the country poorer but I fully support him and all of the other unions in fighting for our rights to have a decent living wage some extra cash in our pockets and a much fairer society. A general strike is needed and is indeed on the horizon.

Put it simply so folks may at last grasp this thing: look out, Joe Public, upon your streets, that's right, where those cast iron 'vents' exist, twixt the road and the kerb - below said fins exist a whole structure, built donkeys back to vent the roads (and houses, flats etc) from sudden incessant downpour flooding.... Except local councils no longer, in many cases, have the resources, the care or the wherewithal to ensure by proper clearance maintenance, that those roadside drainage systems are kept clear of leaves, general rubbish etc, on a regular basis, thus we end up with street floods. Simples. Same with the INFRASTRUCTURE, remaining on the still existent railways system. The Victorians could maintain it, why can't WE.
@Aharding4203
@Aharding4203 Год назад
Victorians had poor people working the dirty jobs like that. Many would be disabled, old, skillless or just desperate. Many would get sick, probably even die. All they would earn is enough to get through the day. The reason it can't be maintained today, is because working in those conditions is unacceptable now. Anyone that does this work in the modern day has had a good level of training, provided with modern equipment and tech also has a good wage package to go with it. The cost of maintenance has sky rocketed since Victorian times
