After losing a young grand daughter a few years ago, my in-laws gave me a tree to honor her memory. My brother in law gave me a small bag of human hair to put in the bottom of the hole. I used the same fertilizer you used. After mixing it well, then the hair went into the hole. I watered the tree well for the first few months, then spring rains took over. And now it has grown several feet. We miss you Halee. Question…….. how many RU-vidrs does it take to plant a tree? ………

Great tree planting video, love the informative banter while you guys were working. That little incident shows where you have a blind spot too. Put a Camera over by the propane tank on the pole so you can get license plates as they go around your driveway. Keep up the great work.

Nice video Tim. From my experience with my 2025r when using 2 function with the loader I gingerly start the curl or dump function then introduce the raise or lower as the loader starts to move. Thus works especially well when having the forks attached.

Muscle memory is real! When I go from my BX treadle pedal to my neighbors shuttle shift I always have to tell myself the direction change is on the column. Usually after tapping my heel on the floorboard! I’ve driven both the BX and the 1025… I agree with John that the bucket lift and roll are easier to find on the BX… the sweet spot is larger and more responsive. Is that just because of the self leveling? I don’t know but it is different for sure!!!

Made the annual Christmas run to Donaldson's yesterday and checked out your new TSC. It's a pretty nice store (but just like ours up the road here.) I didn't notice if they handled welding gas. The one just 3.5 miles up the road from me doesn't but the one in Plainfield does. Welding gas there is a little higher but, at least prior to my retirement, the only time I ran out was on the weekend and TSC is open. Indiana Gas and such are not.

Well, I didn't think it could be done, and you proved me wrong. My brother has a 1025R and I can't get his front loader to lift and curl at the same time no matter what I do. I find it easy on the Kubota, but I guess I don't have your touch on the Deere. Great video!

Tim as a nurseryman let me give some advice for the next tree planting. DON"T remove all the basket like you did here. The basket is there for you to lift the tree with. A lot of times on larger trees we'll place forks on top of the tree then thread a chain around the ears of the basket over the forks and lift it and set it into the hole. My company tends to just use our hydraulic forks to grab the root ball and set the tree into the hole- but that's an expensive tool for non-pros. Once you set the tree into the hole you can cut off the top 1/3 of the basket and as much of the burlap as you can get to. What is left will rot and rust away. Back in the day they treated burlap to keep it from rotting... that's why I think a lot of folks think you have to remove it.

ageed, I also recommend against adding fertilizer to the hole as the tree roots will not venture out, and instead will stay near the tree in the highly fertilized soil.

Funny, this popped up from youtube! I just broke a cable wire last month! The line was only 6" down and under a small tree root system. Fingers crossed cable company will pay the bill to run new line! ALWAYS call! Never assume. I'm thankful it was just a cable tv wire. We now have 300 ft' temp cable run from the pole to the junction box.

I agree with the foot pedal debate. My previous John Deere had the forward reverse padal in one. My present John Deere has the two separate pedals. After almost 3 years, I still catch myself trying to find reverse part of the pedal. Apparently a slow learner. However in my defense I did have the first John Deere for about 18 years. I'm going with extreme muscle memory not "a slow learner". Thanks for the great video Bob

My dad ran gradalls and excavators for many years. One year he got a new gradall that let him switch the controls to match the excavator. He says that actually messed him up more because after so many years, when he sat in the gradall cab, he got the gradall mindset and when he was in the excavator cab he had the excavator mindset. Maybe if you start off from the beginning with the controls the same

I'm very old school so self-leveling I wouldn't like. 1025R I had didn't have that feature and neither did any other tractor I ever had since early 90's. I didn't have hydrastat till that 1025r 2014. I could work the gear tractors just as fast as the hydrostatic but hydro definitely easier my arms. But I was younger too and stronger.

Having a B2410 and an X500, I can switch between both seamlessly. Color memory! LOL I do sometimes pull my heel back to reverse on the X500 when first using it for the season, but then good for the rest of the year. What will be weird is going between the B2410 and the L4060 which has a large pedal vs a pad up front and a pad in the back with the rest under the floor. It's too bad that JD are so much more in price vs Kubota, wouldn't mind having a 4 Series.

I have up on trying to curl the bucket as I raise the loader on my 1025R. Given the limited hydraulic flow,, I don't believe it is significantly slower to do one,, then the other. Tell Jon to stop by my place on his way home. I'll take him to the Mayp Clinic to get that nasty cut checked out, and send you the bill. 🤕🤠

That's why you keep the burlap on the ball of the tree/bush. It will eventually rot off. It will keep everything in one place while planting. 😁😁😁

I think that i can be fairly objective on the topic I have both a kubota B7610 and a John deere 1025r. Before I bought my own tractor I had quite a bit of seat timein my friend's bx. So almost all experience with the treadle peddle before my 1025r. I bought the 1025r tlb first then less than a year later picked up the B7610. I will say that after a day of work with the kubota my ankle feels a lot more sore and every once in a while the heal of my foot gets caught under the rear part of the treadle. I do have size 14 shoes though, So that's probably not a issue for everyone. Lol

You don't need to take the burlap all the way off. Just the wire and cut the burlap from around the trunk. The burlap helps hold the ball together while planting and it will deteriorate very quickly

I am not one to generally give my 2 cents as a comment but my grandparents had a nursery and we specialized in pine trees about that size. i have hand dug and balled 10s of thousands like that we never tied with wire but 7200 baling twine. the burlap was always left on when we planted them for the customer and the twine only cut at the trunk. we had less than 1 percent death rate the burlap will degrade below the soil in a few months

With a treadle pedal very unlikely to push the wrong pedal. Has happened to me with twin pedals on a Cubby when I was looking behind me and my body was twisted around. I now have BX2380 and love the treadle pedal. It did take a little time to get used to but after an hour or so it was not an issue. Did have to tell my wife how to go backwards.

I hated the treadle pedal, I learn in with the Broce broom about a treadle pedal. After 1.5 years I still hated it, but otherwise the broce broom was good just needed a water sprayer and something like a snowplow blade to push excess dirt off to the side and lesson the wear on the actual broom. Then it will also worked even better for shopping mall sidewalks snow removal, would just need a salt drop box.

A tree buddy of mine once told me that for the best chances of a tree to survive a transfer, you should always plant the tree in the same compass orientation as when it was first pulled. But normally store bought trees never get marked "north" on the tree. I can see the plausibility of this theory. It seems like the tree will be less stressed being planted in the orientation that it was accustomed to. Does it really matter? Who knows, but I think it's a thoughtful tip.

Great video guys - you could do an entertaining new channel together if you didn’t live so far apart! I spent well over a year extensively researching and test driving compact tractors before I made my choice two years ago. I tested JD’s (series 1-3, both R’s and E’s), Kubota’s (BX, B, L, Grand L), Masseys, and even Branson (unfortunately no reliable Kioti dealer in my area but I would love to have tried them too). The JD’s and Kubota’s rose to the top partly due to available features but also because of excellent local dealerships. There were a number of reasons why I ended up with a Kubota (although I initially really wanted green to win), but the combined lift/curl was one thing that consistently was much easier to “find”, and the overall hydraulics seemed somewhat smoother overall on the Kubota’s. Of the JD’s, the 3r series was a notable improvement over Series 1 and 2 (as one might expect with the larger, higher-end unit), but the Grand L was still a step above. Of course this all might have been just the particular units I was testing, and others may be different, but there was certainly some consistency between the green and orange. Both are excellent products and I’m not bashing either - I’m sure I would have been very happy with green but for me and my needs, orange won the day and the hydraulics on both the loader and backhoe are still buttery smooth.

Last year I borrowed my neighbors compact Kubota, can't recall the model, to spread a load of lime rock on my driveway. My backhoe wasn't working at the time, it is a 1981 model and the sump strainer was stopped up so the hydraulics quit. I am 70 and holding my leg up to use the direction control treadle was very tiring. I got a JD 1023E two days ago, the side by side pedals are very easy to use, just like the pedals on my 130E JD mower. As a farmer and heavy equipment operator I adapt quickly to any hand control but the 1023E loader control is how I like it. The Kubota had more throw so the average person can be precise but after thousands of hours on backhoes I have no trouble with the shorter throw on my 1023E. I was surprised by how weak the Kubuta loader was. My JD 510 backhoe loader has me spoiled, if what I try to lift is too heavy (like a large tree trunk) or the bucket is under a stump the back of the machine lifts off the ground. My little 1023E will do the same thing, the Kubota, nothing. I couldn't even scrape the pile. If I rammed it into the pile the bucket wouldn't curl.

@@daddio7249 it took me a while to get used to the treadle. My L4060 treadle has side extensions on the toe and heel, so I don’t keep my foot on it. My heel is always on the floor of the tractor (like a car), and my toe pushes down to activate both forward and reverse just by shifting my foot backward or forward a few inches. It’s not tiring at all because the heel of my foot is always resting on the floor. I’m not sure if all the older kubotas all had the side extensions on the treadle, but it works great for me and if actually find it easier than the double pedal on the JD’s. As for the loader, I can only speak for mine and other Kubotas I have used, and they have plenty of lift for the size of the tractor. I don’t think you can judge a brand by a few hours in a borrowed tractor. Maybe there was something wrong with the hydraulics.

I'm a BX owner that owned a JD prior (X739) and I was going to jump up to a 1025R which would of been the natural progression for me, but didn't because of some of the options I wanted the 1025R did not offer. I wanted a B/H with a cab that could fit in a standard garage. The 1025R does not offer that. (even though there are outside solutions now for this) So while the BX is a bit under powered on the loader end compared to the JD, its still a very capable machine for a home owner. They both are great machines, you just have to find the one that is right for you. I'm not sure what you guys THOUGHT you were seeing with the double loader movement LOL.... But the JD does not do the loader double movement as well as the BX... IF AT ALL... It's not a feel thing with the BX, it just does it! EASY. But that is one of those things that each machine might do a bit different then the other. Great job John hanging with the big dog Tim. I have a Kubota MX 6000 with treadle pedal and a Newholland Boomer33 with dual pedals and to be honest I have no problem getting used to either setup. I think my brain adapts depending on which seat I'm on. As far as loader function goes, and I have tried all the major brands, there is nothing smoother, at least in the class4 size tractors, than the Kubota. Try a Kubota MX or a Grand L and you'll see what I mean!

Likewise l have the MX5200 TLB & if you mean "slow" is smooth l can agree with you. It really is fast enough but NO MATCH to the Speed & "smoooth" of my Massey-Ferguson 1736m.

@@donaldstrishock3923 I don't know how Kubota compares to other brands when talking speed but my MX 6000 is plenty fast enough. I'm talking about smoothness when the loader is lifting and dumping or lowering and curling. Most other brands don't perform two functions at once like Kubota. When using the bucket or grapple and loading trucks or trailers the Kubota just smoothly lifts and dumps and curls and lowers at a constant speed and without hesitation. Even my New Holland Boomer tractor, has fantastic lift capacity but, the lift cycle slows way down when trying to dump at the same time. It's hard to explain until you have some seat time on different brand tractors. I've owned a couple of Massey Fergusons and liked them but have not run one in the same class as the MX 6000.

MX6000 and Massey 1736 are totally different class tractors. No comparison. 1736 would compare to l3901 or l3560.

@@TractorTimewithTim Thanks for the reply Tim . The 3560 is a equivalent to the 1736m, but for the loader "speed" no comparison == kubota 7.8 gal per min. VS. Massey-Ferguson @ 12.6 gal per min. Smoothest goes to kubota 3560. Know this because two of my side-by-side neighbors have these SAME Exact Tractors bought within two months of each other. As for myself my Kubota MX5200 TLB shuttle shift @ 825hours is slow ,& week on the hydraulics @9.5 gpm ( even changed hoses &fittings for a 40% gain in loader & back-hoe speed)[ a REAL improvement]. The MX5200 is a reliable tractor. The Massey-ferguson 's speed is "phenomenal"[ l have one also] ,reason:: an Expensive Big TRANSMISSON driven pump-- not a "piggy-back"injection-pump-mounted-side-winder" like ALL Compact tractors have in common. The kubota L3901 in a class of a Massey-Ferguson 1840E == 95%.Case in point there is No "real-best" compact tractor out there except the one with 2000 plus hours of near trouble free performance & is "PAYED FOR ". What air pressure arwe you running in your rear tires with rim guard?

Very low. Only enough to keep the tire from slipping on the rim.

I'm curious if you think the backhoe is a better way to dig holes for tree planting, vs. your much loved attachment, the post hole digger. Augers are available up to 24". Is that big enough for the tree in your video? If you had a choice between the two methods (backhoe vs auger) what are the reasons for choosing one of the other? Thanks for your videos.

Backhoe. Hole is not deep. No need for the unwieldy PHD

Dr. Dirt (aka Dick Crum originally from the big metropolis of Tangier In.) seems to suggest 12-12-12 for everything. Dr. Dirt saying "add 12-12-12" is a lot like Dr Kelly Brackett telling John Gage and Roy Desoto to "administer IV ringers lactate D5W" On another note, have you ever seen or used a "ditch crummer?"

@@TractorTimewithTim Oh gosh weren't they! I just imagine that Pat is a wonderful guy to work for. I worked with Dick Crum's brothers for years at the plant in Covington right by the Beef House. I knew them a lot better than Dick, he's been gone from the home land for a LOT of years. Heck so have I. :-)

When I planted my trees, the instructions were to keep the metal wire and burlap otherwise the root ball can get damaged when trying to get into position. It’s been a few years and they’re growing fine. Also you don’t want to plant it deep…base of tree should be a few inches above grade.
